2024 Transfer Portal Thread

No one is ever going to "replace" DK, and quite frankly that shouldn't even be the goal. Lack of balanced scoring was a major flaw in this UT team, and the optimum fix is to have 4-5 players we can look to for scoring on any given night.

ZZ, maybe Gainey, and Carr, and find a couple more in the portal. Maybe Aidoo takes a step forward if he's here. Lots of possibilities, but looking for that one 'guy' is bound to end up in disappointment. DK was a shooting star (pun intended) - were not likely to see his kind again anytime soon, if ever.
I agree, just look at UConn or Houston, they have balanced scoring throughout and I think that should be a goal of next season.

Guys are going to have some up and down games. When Knecht scored 2 points against NC State, JJJ had 23 points and was 5-7 from 3. He wasn’t a first option this year.

Against UK in the last game of the regular season, he had 8 points and 10 rebounds (5 offensive) and was 2/6 from 3. He contributed. At UK, he scored 26 points.

Bottom line is JJJ was important to this team to win the regular season title and get to the EE. He had clutch moments at UK, at Bama, against Texas and Creighton in the NCAAT. This team was always going to lose some games and without him at UK and at Bama, we may not have been a 2 seed. After this last week, JJJ showed a lot to me, and I just don’t get the criticism anymore.
Not so much a criticism, but more an acceptance of the player that JJJ is. He's never been a guy who would come in and be "the man". He's a swiss army knife type. He's good at a lot of things and on occasion, he can go off offensively. Yes, the other parts of his game are rock solid, but when you're looking for scorers to keep opponents honest, there were more than a few times where he just didn't deliver the points the team needed. To be fair, it's not been such an issue before because Vescovi was still a player on offense. This year Vescovi's just been so disappointing. Historically, JJJ's been far more consistent than Vescovi tho. JJJ never was the volume scorer that Vescovi was before this year. I think Vescovi having the year he did was the main reason we didn't break through into the final 4 this year. If we get his career average from him this year, I have no doubt we're a 1 seed and we likely beat Purdue despite the officiating. Crap happens and I don't blame them for being human, but In games that really mattered, it was often 5 on 3 or sometimes 5 on 2 depending on Aidoo's magic act. Regardless, it was a great season. Proud of them all. Ready to turn the page and add some new faces.

I agree he is likely a starter next season, but that 20ppg average is doubtful. Hopefully we have a team with more balance scoring.

I said he would hit that average for the second half of the season. Once he hits the midway point of the SEC schedule…he gets 6-8 more points a game just by decision making.

Something happen at FAU? Just saw that Vladislav Goldin (their 7'1" Center), Nicholas Boyd (Guard), and Giancarlo Rosado (Forward) have all hit the portal.

Coach going to Michigan
I would say that we should overspend for Vlad, but now that Danny White has decided to flush several million dollars down the toilet on women's basketball, I'm guessing Vlad the Impaler isn't a viable option after all. What timing. You can't make this stuff up. Does anything ever go our way at UT? Ever?

The basketball program’s NIL budget and the school’s spending on women’s basketball aren’t connected. You can breathe easy.

Yeah, I forgot about the supposed separation of funds, but think of all the goodies we could add to the baseball stadium with all that money being wasted!

Curious....how was my rebound, pivot and 2 step in trying to recover some message board cred after posting on only 1 cup of coffee this morning? ;)

Intersting that we've contacted Frankie Collins, hmmm (if this as already posted, sorry)
He'd fit CRB standard defensively but offensively there's some question marks.

He made the PAC-12 All-Defensive team, and was 6th in the country in steals. Broke the ASU record for number of steals within a season.

He averaged 13.8 PPG on only 42% FG%, 31% 3PT FG and 58% FT% which is not great.

Inconsistent is inconsistent. Going back to ON and Plavi, you just never could depend on them from one game to another. We said the same thing about JJJ and Vescovi this year. Same thing. Up and down. There one game and gone the next. Sorry, but a tiger doesn't change his stripes. Aidoo might be a bit thicker/stronger, but he is who and what he is at this point. Depending on him is a huge risk and IMO, it's fools gold. We'll be having these same discussions at the end of next season assuming he's still here. You either roll the dice on Estrella being the answer or you grab a physical big man from the portal. No way I hang my hat on Aidoo....again, assuming he's on the roster. Personally, my money says he leaves. Hope Barnes is planning for this. You get a chance at a kid like Vlad and you jump at it if he fits the culture.
Truth

He needs to improve his strength as well as his mental approach to playing the game. I doubt he will ever be the beast that many of the 7foot plus players who weight in the 250-270 range, but a different mental approach would improve his ability to not get pushed around the court, could improve his ability to just dunk the ball, and maintain control of the basketball inside the paint. He has athletic ability, just needs to be more aggressive and draw fouls instead of trying to hit 2 foot jumpers. He also needs to learn how to use tard to improve his accuracy. Potential is there if he wants to get more aggressive.

I don't see Aidoo ever being a physical banger, it just isn't part of his DNA.

IMO, he should work on his perimeter shooting and make himself into a stretch 5. That kind of player is of value at the next level, and I don't see him sticking in the NBA any other way.

No, JJJ went away the second half

Love the guy but a complete enigma offensively. So smooth at times, beautiful jump shot, strong--but just didn't have the eye of the tiger
offensively. We'd see it for 15 minutes in a game and then he'd disappear. We'd see it in one game--and then the next three games he's giving us 4, 5, 7 points. Against Purdue we suffered for the same reasons we've all been talking about for many weeks--a lot of Knecht and a lot of nothing from everybody else.

I’d give my arm for Judah Mintz to enter the portal, then I’d give my leg if JJ Starling entered the portal.

But they’ll prob stay at Cuse.

However both funds are dependent on the same donor pool... After sec money, tickets, etc

He had 8 at halftime then disappeared. I thought he would get to 15 and we would win

He "disappeared" because DK went off. At some point, there is one basketball where there is usually 1-2 shots per possession. We were riding our CPOY. JJJ only missed one shot, and that was a late midrange shot near the paint.
