It's not like Pope is Rick Barnes either. Pope is having to rebuild the entire roster from the portal. There is no core of players that have played together. There is no established culture. The better chance is not "perceived", it's real. If Lanier's dream is the NBA, he can bet on himself and settle for less money now to increase his odds of reaching his dream. But if he's good with a degree and no NBA future, by all means, take the money and run (as Steve Miller would say).*A perceived better chance. It's not like Pope is a middle school coach and UK is TSU. I mean half the NBA are UK players. At 22, with borderline NBA prospects, yes Im taking the 1.7 million over 500k every single day. Y'all are coming from a place of established adults with some money in the bank. 1.7 million is absolutely life changing money for a large portion of the country (if you're smart with it).
If that’s the #s Barnes needs to suck it up and split the difference. The tax + more proven coach should be enough for a “smart” decision to still land here. Unless BYU throws a wrench in things.Fwiw I also don’t think the numbers are that split, I think UK was around $1.1-$1.3m and Tennessee is probably around the $800k mark…as Chris has pointed out after factoring in state income tax that difference is even less.
That a great comparison there. Totally apples to apples.Depends…do you believe I can tell a company like Walmart what they can sell their product for?
Barnes gives them input on who he wants but contracts and budget are totally up to Spyre…
It's silly to say him going to UK means he will no longer have a NBA future. Maybe Barnes doesn't like his defensive effort and he gets 20 min a game here. Maybe Pope promises him the world and he gets to throw up 18 shots a game and lights up the scoreboard. I agree going to UT is most likely a better option if his goal is the NBA, but that's not a certainty. Especially if 1.7M is involved (allegedly). It's not like Pope is Rick Barnes either. I agree. But no matter where he goes, the potential to develop is there. The potential to crash and burn is also there anywhere. I’m simply making the point that people on here demonizing the kid or calling him dumb/short sighted are being ridiculous. Nothing is guaranteed in this life, if he wants the cash now, it is what it is. It isn’t a brilliant decision and it isn’t a stupid one. It’s not that cut and dry though, at least imo.
A more accurate comparison using the job field would be to say Job A will pay you $500k more than Job B your first year. However, you have a chance to earn 4x as much at Job B in Year 2 if you meet your quotas than you do at Job A.
But if Lanier's agent has a lower estimation of Lanier's NBA prospects than Lanier does, Visockas might push for the biggest commission he can obtain right now. If he's right, Lanier's disappointment will be on Lanier's play next year. If he's wrong, he can just roll into the next negotiation. It doesn't seem likely to me that the agent just suddenly lucked into unexpected interest from BYU out of the blue. This is more to my way of thinking. If Lanier's goal is the NBA, one school currently gives you a better chance IMO. If he feels the NBA is not in his future, then by all means, get your money now.
This is an interesting angle and one I haven’t really thought of yet. Definitely may not be the case, but Lanier didn’t have a good showing at the G League camp last week, at least from a film and stat sheet point of view. Did that maybe make him or his agent more prone to look for the best possible offer this transfer window? Who knows, but is just another example of how it’s maybe not as black and white as the money and situations being offered. But if Lanier's agent has a lower estimation of Lanier's NBA prospects than Lanier does, Visockas might push for the biggest commission he can obtain right now. Speculation on my part, but I’m guessing it has to do with the dead period that starts Tuesday…do they want to rush him here for a visit after UK for maybe a few hours, or try and wait ~10 days and do a full OVIs there anything (other than logistics) to make of the fact that a Tennessee visit hasn’t been scheduled yet?
I’m just going to go out on a limb here and say that if he visits both BYU and UK before the dead period and not us then it’s not happeningSpeculation on my part, but I’m guessing it has to do with the dead period that starts Tuesday…do they want to rush him here for a visit after UK for maybe a few hours, or try and wait ~10 days and do a full OV
Strictly hypothetically, if I were Lanier’s agent, and my client said “I want to go to Tennessee, but also want to maximize my value in the process,” I think I would be playing this exactly the way it’s currently playing out. Mostly because he seems to have more attractive fallback options than we do.Is there anything (other than logistics) to make of the fact that a Tennessee visit hasn’t been scheduled yet?
