2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Speculation on my part, but I’m guessing it has to do with the dead period that starts Tuesday…do they want to rush him here for a visit after UK for maybe a few hours, or try and wait ~10 days and do a full OV
It looks like we were squeezed out of our OV, in effect. That speaks pretty loudly. Since the dead period was a known, weren't we in touch with them to arrange our OV for Monday, if we were promised last visit?

I don't see any harm in trying to get him here briefly this weekend, unless we received a final answer privately at the time our visit was in effect replaced. Seems like we could fly him here from Utah. If we try to see him after KY, I suspect they will try to keep him til midnight, if they can. Last visit is best, but this circumstance may be an exception.

An unofficial visit this weekend doesn't mean he can't still OV after the dead period, does it? Or do we only get one visit (total) under the latest rules? I can't remember. That would complicate things.

He’s going directly from BYU to UK, he will be at both schools for less than 24 hours each. We could in theory bring him in on Tuesday for a few hours probably, not sure on that though. He could UOV & OV but I don’t think that will happen.

Are you still confident that he signs with the Vols. Over 50%?

Hold up! I just checked the NCAA site, and the dead period begins Wednesday (not Tuesday). That means a Tuesday visit would be permitted. It looks like we could have him all day on Tuesday and Tuesday night, after Kentucky's scheduled Monday OV.

Also a couple of interesting things on a BYU site. It looks like this didn't come straight out of the blue.

Today
As I reported earlier this month, BYU completed a Zoom call with Chaz on May 5 and put themselves among his top schools. Sources tell me BYU is competitive with NIL for Chaz, and Kevin Young’s NBA background and offensive acumen are enticing for Chaz whose goal is to make the NBA. Kevin Young has shown Lanier what he did with Devin Booker and envisions Lanier having that type of role at BYU.

According to Travis Branham of 247 Sports, Lanier will take an official visit to BYU this weekend followed by a Kentucky visit Monday. A visit to Tennessee is still reportedly on the table. Chaz would have to finish any other visits before Wednesday (5/22) if he wants to visit another campus before the dead period.

One industry source familiar with the situation told me earlier this week he believed BYU was right behind Tennessee and ahead of Kentucky. It’s unclear to me at this time what these visits say about the pecking order of those 3 schools. That order could have changed in the last few days.

.... If BYU were to land Lanier, he’d be a featured part of the offense and contend for All Big 12 honors.

Sources tell me that BYU had a Zoom call with Lanier on Sunday [May 5] and has a legitimate chance with Lanier. Kevin Young has shown Lanier what he did with Devin Booker and envisions Lanier having that type of role at BYU. Young’s NBA experience and pedigree is a huge draw to Lanier as he tries to improve his NBA prospects, and BYU is putting together a competitive NIL offer as well. Lanier has a lot of suitors from top schools, but sources tell me BYU is right in there among the top schools to land Lanier; Kentucky and Tennessee are pushing hard as well and are considered two of the favorites. The next step BYU needs to hit to land Lanier is getting him on campus for a visit.

If this is close to accurate, makes you wonder how long Georgia will remain patient with White?

Also, would love the entertainment value if Kentucky struggles to middle of the conference. “Fhar Cal…wait - bring back Cal! Their forum would be comedic gold!

Great find, very interesting.

Players demanding excellence from themselves and their teammates is a completely different discussion. (MJ and tiger)

Belichick had a very specific collective bargaining agreement he had stay within the framework of. He couldn’t, nor do I think he would have, just thrown the most money to every player they wanted. So again, it was a different type of not settling.

Saban was allowed to cheat and buy players.

None of those that you brought up have anything to do with coach Barnes trying to navigate the new NIL landscape in college sports.

You and some others have this ridiculous (yes it’s ridiculous, nonsensical, and simplistic) notion that if you throw all the monies at players you are guaranteed championships. It’s so much more complex than that. Starting with the fact that as much as we would like to believe it is, available money isn’t unlimited.

Edit-
You may want to go back and reread my comments.

1. I never mentioned NIL.

2. My comment about Saban and others was about the drive to win. Once again, money wasn’t mentioned in my post.

3. My post was in response to”winning Championships.” The poster mentioned building the best team possible as Barnes’ goal is to win a championship and the window is closing on his career. Yes, I think Barnes expects to win now.

I laugh about it, many of the ones complaining are the same ones who have asked multiple times this offseason and last for updates and info lol.
I like your moniker BTO! Bleeding Pantone 151 is what most of us on this message board have in common. Our passion knows no bounds. To BTO, SF, and others, thanks for sharing accurate and timely recruiting updates. They are greatly appreciated.

Fwiw I also don’t think the numbers are that split, I think UK was around $1.1-$1.3m and Tennessee is probably around the $800k mark…as Chris has pointed out after factoring in state income tax that difference is even less.
Do you have the contracts in hand or are speculating? Impressionable minds are watching.

Strictly hypothetically, if I were Lanier’s agent, and my client said “I want to go to Tennessee, but also want to maximize my value in the process,” I think I would be playing this exactly the way it’s currently playing out. Mostly because he seems to have more attractive fallback options than we do.

You may want to go back and reread my comments and they to comprehend before making such a ridiculous response.

1. I never mentioned NIL. So leave how to read and not assume.

With they said, please go take a Valium and relax or go for a run and release some of your hostility. My gosh. 😂
The notion that folks have of Barnes not wanting to win bad enough, because he isn’t willing to back the brinks truck up to every recruit the fans want is silly.

You said you respect MJ, tiger, belichick etc because of their desire to win. In relation to Rick Barnes and Chaz Lanier, what does that mean, if you aren’t suggesting that Coach Barnes doesn’t want to win badly enough or he would pay whatever it takes to get Lanier on the team???
