2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Lanier UK visit is today. If he makes it out of that visit without committing, and gets to campus I give us the edge. I think we get him if he makes it, and it seems like the same situation as it was with Tyson and UNC with us being the home state school. Just gotta see if that money is too much to overcome or not.
Lanier doesn't have to pull his name from the draft until the 29th IIRC. I think all options will be on the board until at least that date. UT will get a visit I suspect. Not sure of the academic schedule or if that applies to Lanier, but I won't be surprised if this rolls into June. Sure don't expect any news today.

I don’t think it goes that long, I think a decision is likely made this week.

Is the 29th correct as the date to pull out of the draft? I was under the impression that he was going to see it through to the end? Those individual workouts were designed to perhaps impress some NBA team to take a shot with him, no? With the dead period or whatever it's called looming, that doesn't mean his agent can't field offers, right? One would think Lanier would sit back and let UT, UK and BYU stew and keep the NBA door open as long as possible?

I think that made more sense when the NBA was a legitimate option for him. Two failed attempts at getting an invite to the combine pretty much sealed his fate when it came to the draft in 2024 whether he pulls out, or not. No one believes the NBA is a realistic threat in this race, so his reluctance to react to the lukewarm response from NBA personnel shouldn't likely be taken as a sign of anything. He will likely take his visits and decide in short order. Maybe that takes until the 29th, which would still just be a week following his last visit, but I'd bet he's off the board by the weekend.

After the feedback he’s gotten I don’t think he is going to wait that long. I would venture to guess that a decision is made by this weekend.

Crap. I was hoping he'd put off the bad news until later in the month. Getting disappointing news from Hoover and Lanier all on the same weekend. Almost too much for this old heart to bear.

I don’t think he holds out until then is my opinion, he’s gotten enough feedback to know what his options are.

From Basilio this morning:

Chaz Lanier Latest:
You're probably reading the Chaz Lanier stuff with him visiting BYU and Kentucky and saying this isn't how is was supposed to work out. You'd be right. The way the Lanier thing was supposed to work is that he was going to enroll at Tennessee after graduating from North Florida. The original plan before all this blew up was for Lanier to try the NBA draft waters and ultimately end up at Tennessee with very little fanfare. That's what Tennessee thought was going to happen. Two things happened along the way that changed the equation.

1. The NCAA Altered Their Rules For All Players Making Portal Entry Mandatory:
All players (even graduated players) are now required to enter the transfer portal. This is an NCAA change that occurred literally right at the opening of the spring transfer window. This caught Tennessee by surprise. Under the old rules, a player like Lanier who was a grad transfer didn't have to enter the portal, but was free to enroll at his next school. This is what Tennessee hoped would happen when they first got involved with him a few months back. Once Lanier was forced to enter the portal the equation changed.

2. Lanier Hired An Agent:
Again ... It wasn't supposed to go down this way. Tennessee originally had a loose understanding with Lanier and his family on an outline toward an NIL agreement. As we've told you here in preceding reports, Tennessee doesn't get into specifics NIL wise with prospects until they're on campus. This is almost the opposite of the way football recruiting is handled in Knoxville. With Lanier there was a loose understanding ballpark figure wise for what it was going to take (which has since exploded) to land him.

How Is BYU Involved?
It's called having an agent. See if you can follow this. Deirunas Visockas, the agent for Chaz Lanier, also represents other NBA players. One of his clients played for the Phoenix Suns this past season and was coached by new BYU Head Coach Kevin Young there in the Valley. Young is an NBA guy who's leveraging his connections from his role as an associate head coach with the Suns in the NBA at his new stop in Provo, Utah. Put it this way, the agent connection is the only thing that makes sense with Lanier and BYU.

This is a young man who's the child of a Baptist minister I'm talking about here. I've been told that if it comes down to the highest offer, Lanier is going to play for the Cougars next season as they've been extremely aggressive toward him NIL wise. In fact, I was told by sources close to this that word of Kentucky's offer has been grossly exaggerated in the media while BYU's has been undersold.

What's Going To Happen?
If Lanier makes it to Knoxville, Tennessee will get the last crack at him prior to Wednesday's one-week dead period. All potential suitors for Lanier want to get this done this week. Being last in these deals never hurts.

I'm wondering now what kind of stomach Tennessee is going to have to see this through. They committed to this kid to the point where they promised him on the front end of their courtship that they wouldn't recruit anyone else at his position. Tennessee kept their word. I was told that Lanier, though looking around at other schools, has been highly communicative with Tennessee every step of the way and that this is appreciated within Tennessee's program.
It's just that the portal requirement coupled with agent involvement has really muddied the waters here. If Tennessee fails to land him it's going to put all kinds of pressure on Cam Carr to grow up in a hurry and it will leave Tennessee with some egg on their face as they only have 10 players going into the dead period. Spring NIL era basketball recruiting is a strange game indeed.

BTW, Tennessee still believes (and I'm going to trust this here today) that if Lanier indeed makes to campus, they're going to land him and he's ultimately going to make it here.

I think he makes it to campus IMO. Tennessee has held up their end of the bargain, and it seems that he and his family appreciate that. If he ultimately doesn’t even give us a visit though then it just looks bad on his part.

Confused on this agent thing. I thought that was still illegal while eligible for college play. Apparently not??

lol, this is almost exactly what SF posted over the weekend. And people wonder why we say Basilio’s “source” is VN.

So kinda cool story bro moment over the weekend...

My son had a soccer tournament in Cincinnati this weekend and on Saturday night I saw Steven Pearl at the bar (not the cool story part lol)... well Sunday morning as we were leaving the hotel I saw Steven in the drivers seat, and low and behold his daddy was putting his luggage in the back of the SUV! I yelled out "Hey, Bruce" and he said good morning and told my son good luck at his game (he was in his uniform). He looked to be in a hurry so I didn't nag him for a pic or try to really talk to him.

So I guess Steven is of use after all as an assistant driving his dad around to these AAU events hahaha.

A hotel bar. Exactly where I’d expect to find Steven Pearl.

Man, I'm one that believes that Basilio does have a source in the basketball realm at Tennessee, but wow...that is either a credit to the accuracy of the sources on here like SF, they have the same source, or TB is ripping off that info. Or perhaps their sources have the same source, but that is eerily similar.

Yeah, he changed around a few things and left some smaller details out, other than that you could have copy and pasted SF’s update to Basilio’s blog that’s how similar they are. Of course, I’m sure most of Basilio’s listeners don’t come on VN, so they’ll never know, but it certainly looks like TB is just reading the thread. He’s never “broke” any news in this portal season. Almost everything he has said has come a few days after it’s said on here.

Funny that we are now hearing “BYU can’t match UK or TN in NIL” when we’ve been told BYU was only really in it because they have immense funds to throw around.

Must mean the visit wasn’t that great and BYU is out of it.

I mean SF was right again...

"First— Usually the earliest leaks come from agents, managers and handlers, not from staff or NIL. The sources of the best information, like Trilly etc. all have agent connections. Agents share information as a tactic to manipulate outcomes. Journalists and others, check that data with sources in NIL and staff. They have their own agendas and often correct the record (or intentionally don’t) to help their agendas. Staffs lie very rarely. It backfires. Agents lie sometimes. Handlers lie more. They are playing a short game, and they’re happy to cause trouble. They get dumped when kids turn pro. They get one shot at some new wheels. They take it.

All this leads to one thing— The market is higher this year, but the handlers are lying to make it seem even higher. Very few of the numbers we’ve heard are real, according to those I talk to."
