ZZ was gassed against Purdue, regardless of what bTo or anyone else says... you don't shoot that badly on jumpers with fresh legs. Now I think the flu Santi caught was impacting more than just Santi, you also don't have only one player on a team catch a virus.

But when ZZ is not fighting an illness he can and will play 40 minutes every single game. He's got the endurance to do it, I'm not worried about us finding a PG to take his minutes this upcoming season. I would just rather his replacement get a season playing and practicing with ZZ under his belt so they understand the right way to play PG for Barnes.

Aidoo is not rock solid but the current belief is he’ll stay. He’s been pretty down, but he’s also very connected to the team. Estrella and Carr aren’t going anywhere barring something I don’t know about. Cade has suitors. He’ll need to decide. DJ, well… He’s still DJ.

I will say that I was very happy with how great of a teammate DJ was all year. Would really love to see him get his crap together and be a really good player for us down the road. The players that have made it out of Barnes’s dog house have been good for us. Admiral was in Barnes’s doghouse for the longest time, and he’s one of the best players we’ve had here in a long time. I’ll believe it when I see it though that DJ stays. It’s very rare in this day and age of NIL and tampering.

I think that ZZ will usually have worn out legs late in games. He always plays harder than anybody the rest of the game. Plus his outside shooting is awfully streaky - just when I start to scream at the TV to not shoot he often knocks down huge 3s.

I agree. Barnes loves the kid, and DJ never quit cheering the team even though he wasn’t playing at all. He’s also got a great set of skills. Getting him to be where he’s supposed to be and do what he’s supposed to do is another matter.

Honestly we just hope the wake-up call for DJ doesn't have to be him leaving the program.

I'm not even sure it's a really bad situation, think of it more like he's been grounded...didn't do anything bad enough to kick him off the team or anything, but it's also behavior that's not going to be rewarded with playing time. That's what I've gathered.

Breaking curfew, missing classes, practices, study halls etc. isn't going to fly no matter how talented you are.

I don’t think that is a fair comparison, necessarily. I wouldn’t say anyone on this board is expecting DJ to be the next Dalton Knecht. Our support of him is mostly that he seems to be a great teammate with freak athleticism and a low-floor, high-ceiling prospect that we would like to see succeed. I don’t mind the transfer portal, but this is a roster of 13 not 85 like football, so I’m not a huge fan of the revolving door where we just give up on a prospect when he doesn’t contribute immediately.

DJ was a top 50-60 prospect for a reason and he is still technically just a redshirt freshman. He has been plenty of eligibility left to grow and be a contributor, and many times guys who buy in and stay in the system end up being important to the stability of this program.

That’s not what I’m saying at all. IMO he has great potential and I just hate to see him throw it away with bad grades and things like that. I love Aidoo and Awaka and I hope they both choose to stay, but I still want Jefferson to stay too. I’d love to see him overcome his issues. I didn’t want Dillione to leave either, but it is what it is.

We have 3 spots open (4 originally, minus 1 for Bishop)

DK, Santi, JJJ = graduated
Freddie = portal

Bishop is our lone 24 signee, and thus far the only spot taken. If we don't lose anyone else to the portal I would be extremely excited for next season. Cause you can still add 3 from the portal but keep a variety of talent returning that has experience and development in the system already.

The 5 position needs to be upgraded ASAP. If that means getting Aidoo big better, and stronger with a killer attitude, great. I think Awaka would be the ideal 4, if he could extend his range out to 10-12 feet.. We badly need 1 or 2 3 point shooters 6'7/6'8 and a backup !. that leaves maybe great defender some where at the 1, 2, can or 3. Just my take.

The huge improvement Awaka made at the line this year gives me some hopeful confidence that he will add 15 and in to his arsenal. The stroke looks fluid and confident
