2024 Transfer Portal Thread

You can tell Lanier is an experienced player. He does a great job of pass location to help give his teammates good looks. He's also very good at moving without the ball to show himself for catch and shoot opportunities.

He's a lot better with the ball in his hand than Santi or even Gainey. It's a highlight clip of course, but I also like that when he drives to the rim he seems to make good decisions with shot selection or passing.

I do like the lower school wanting to step up, most of them aren't expecting to be starters and clock 30 mpg. They want to play at the highest level they can since it's rare most will get a chance in the NBA.

DK wanted to play in March and develop as a defensive player to give himself a better shot at playing professionally. He exceeded all expectations.

Dubar, Lanier, Thomas are all guys with 1 year left and no guarantee any of them will get a shot in the NBA. But all 3 know coming here next year they'll get minutes and developed with a very real chance to play in March.

I don’t think you want a hard 8, and then question marks…that would give you 8, Boswell, Phillips, and then 3 developmental guys? That leaves very little room for injury, or a miss on a portal guy that I don’t think you want to take. IMO you’re at minimum taking 3 portal guys you expect to be major players, and ideally 4.

I agree. I guess what I am saying is even though we want 4 instant impact portal players, how many are going to be willing to take the risk of coming to Tennessee if we land Dubar and Lanier? I think we without a doubt want to take as many impact players as possible, but I just wonder how many of those guys will look at the roster and then see 8 spots “locked up” in their mind and wonder how many minutes are left.

Are Boswell or Philips expected to contribute next year? Either way, I think 1 more impact transfer would be good to get b/c as you said there’s a lot of unknowns with that roster. Pretty hard to expect 5 big time gets from the portal though. Any chance we go back to high school ranks for one of the openings?

Actually, with the guys leaving in portal we are in full rebuild mode. We lost 4 starter/major contributors and 2 guys that would have been expected to step into 2 of those spots. We were weak in the post before Awaka left and now its defcon2. We need to have at least 2 posts out of the 5 remaining slots. Maybe Estrella and/or Philips can step up but we were already 1 man short I the post-rotation. Last year our post rotation was AIdoo/Awaka/JJJ and we were short-handed and undersized even then. Now we need at least one contributor with legit size and one other guy developmental to groom because come next season we are right back at the drawing board.

Basilio mentioned a player in the portal that Tennessee is involved with (and feels pretty good about) that "will blow your mind".

Probably blustering, but when it comes to basketball, that is one area I think Tony has decent connections, though I still recommend a boulder of salt.

Brian Hartman suggested he played east of here (Mark Williams?), but Tony said this guy didn't play east of here, and that they're talking about different players.

Also mentioned we are in good shape with Lanier and Dubar, which is pretty clear.

I mean you’re throwing Carr and Estrella in there and if guys are looking at our roster they probably aren’t looking at those guys in that way…they hardly appeared this year, I’m sure in their minds those aren’t really guys in their way.

Seems weird to post a thanks & goodbye if you have intentions of returning.

Leaving eligibility out there does not mean you are planning on returning it means you have a working brain and/or smart people advising you. Never burn bridges you might need to cross again. The fact he declared and didn't enter portal actually says more. That if he does decide the draft is not the way he is likely to stay put. Hitting the portal and declaring is a statement that you're on the wide market now and looking for greener pastures.

Impossible to say today as we sit with 5 openings

I’ve heard for a few weeks that we’ll have 3+ visitors this week, but have not heard a single name. BTO shared Dubar, but I still think there are more coming. I don’t know if they are playing this close to the vest, due to the environment, but typically they’d leak it to journalists midweek.
So, Dubar would be one of the 3. Does anybody know if Lanier can visit us at this moment in time? Because he’s the one guy A LOT of people seem very sure about us getting. I’m just trying to piece together who the possible 3 are if 3 end up coming.

But you're correct that as of today he's not officially in the transfer portal. But it doesn't close until May 1st so will shall see.

And he’s a graduate so technically that deadline doesn’t apply to him either

If he’s not in the portal he can’t visit

Welcome aboard, Bronny James

What's funny is he declared on March 16th...2 days before the portal was even open. So he couldn't do both on March 16th when he made that post. He's basically there without being there is all, most likely waiting to confirm it before he declares/commits to the new school.

Had he wanted to hit the portal he could have waited 2 days or .. entered the portal 2 days later.. a month later he still hasn't.

Yep, was actually thinking that as well. I've always assumed if you graduate you basically can wait until enrolling at the new school.
Yes as a graduate he could just come and enroll at UT. What he can't do is have any official 'recruiting' contact with the program until then.

As bTo just pointed out he's a graduate transfer so he can enter the portal whenever. NBA draft isn't until June, so he could wait until after that and still portal.

And I never said he has, I legit was just sharing a highlight clip of him and talking about what I liked about his game...
