2024 Transfer Portal

CJ, that is some impressive revisionist history. When KJH took over, the free agent, immediate eligibility transfer portal was not in existence. Kellie's main task was keeping Horston in the fold and minimizing roster loss.

She began with Burrell, Davis, Horston, KK, Jazz Massengill, Zaay Green, and Key. That is 3 future first round WNBA picks. I believe KK was also drafted in a later round and if Key had not health problems should would have been at least a 2nd round pick.

Kellie certainly went after SEC caliber players but as discussed ad nauseaum on this board, she could not sign enough of them.

Fair to say she should have done better with her initial staff hires. Bringing over her Missouri St. staff in total was a mistake but she shook that group up after (2? seasons).

And if the portal is a bandaid, a whole lot of teams are covered in them. I will take a Rickea jackson bandaid any time.
Sometimes a bandaid is all that is necessary and Rickea was the exception, not the rule.
But portal players are not foundation players.
Indeed she had talent on the bench,,,and did little with it bc her system was not a system at all. In fact everyone on this forum berated her for the "stand around and jack up a bad shot bc the shot clock warranted a desperation attempt" offense.

Coach Kim comes in with a totally different system and from what I have seen in this short time she has proven to be a closer, both in portal and in getting this job as coach of one of the top known programs in the BB world with but one year of experience.

There aren't many coaches with one or no D1 experiences who can shock the nation.

So odd that so many act like they never knew that. Only discussed several million times. And we all hope the new staff does much better. The bar couldn't be much lower. 25 hs recruiting is going to be mega important.
22025's and as well 2026 recruits
For THEY WILL become coach Kim's foundation players

What did she do that shocked you ?

We are basically in agreement. CKC has handled her first month on the job about as well as could be done. Her portal recruiting has gone well and if rumors pan out it is about to get better.

And yes, indeed the offensive schemes need to be improved from the KJH era.

But, CKC has not "shocked the nation" yet so lets not get ahead of ourselves here.

But of Kellie's HS recruits, no one and I mean no one sang Karoline Striplin's praises more than you and I am surprised you don't classify her as an SEC caliber player. Indiana thinks she is a big 10 caliber but maybe that is an entirely set of criteria.

Puckett made the all SEC freshman team so other SEC coaches probably need to be informed that she too was not an SEC caliber player so they can retract that honor.

Wynn certainly held up pretty well this season in the SEC play as well so SHHH don't tell her she is not of the caliber. What she does not know won't hurt here.

Also interesting to know that Spear, Hollingshhead, and Powell during her two seasons and the portal players that CKC is bringing in are not "foundation players".

Did Karo come in SEC ready?
DId Puckett come in SEC ready?
Did Kaiya come in SEC ready? (physically, maybe, but skillset,,Nope!
Edie?

Had Karo been used as a PF, she would have been SEC ready but as a 5,,,NO way
Has Sara, Kaiya and Karo reached that level,,,yes, are they elite in their time and ascent,,,you tell me.

I am a coach first and foremost, MTV
And one impossibly hard to impress.
NO, none of those players (except Karo in her rightful position were SEC ready.

This is and was,,,and if not done differently,,will be the difference between contenders (SC, LSU) and pretenders. They recruit HS and fill in gaps with portals...AS IT SHOULD BE! if you are going to build a program

Kaiya was the most physically ready for SEC play, but it has taken two years for her to get there and she still is not a starter...Not her fault, I say in absolution. none of the players got the off-season training they needed nor did they get the coaching needed to individually advance.

Coach Kim will have to use portal players to fill in many spots and I do not fault her for this,,the situation dictated this...But if she is still relying on portal players to carry her in year 4-5 I will be as critical on her as I was on Holly and Kellie.

And don’t forget Kellie recruited the great Pissott.

Heading to bed, my final thoughts tonight…I am pretty damned excited to see a new style of play in the SEC next season. I am a huge WBB fan, love the game and follow it closely. It’s been a long while now that the SEC has been considered a physical league that was primarily defense first. I cannot wait to see a new approach to the game in this conference finally, and I suspect many others are anxious to see it also, hope it works well and we all witness something new that works. Let’s be honest, this conference is long overdue for some excitement and innovation. I realize Ark gave it a try, but it was such a weak attempt I don’t count it as legit.

All this gobbelbygook to say Kellie couldn't recruit corvette type high school players. Well I'll be dang, who knew?

But it wasn't bc she couldn't identify them nor bc she didn't try. Madison Booker ring a bell? Or Del Rosario? Or Shade?

I do believe she could have recruited the same players out of the portal we're seeing interest fm now.

But none of that had anything to do w what the previous posts were about. They were about strict adherence to the 'system'.

And yes I judged off one game bc it's the only one available unless I want to depress myself by watching the Va Tech game.
The portal commits we have were also already being recruited by Kellie as was Whitehorn. Why is this a gotta beat down Kellie to always elevate Kim

Let's just all move forward and cheer for the coach and team we have now without the constant insulting on a LVFL.

Coach Jumper,, do you think Karo Striplin would
Have stayed had she played in her proper position on the court?? She definitely was used incorrectly.

Not with this style of offense...Speed is essential in all positions in a high-speed offense...
There's no need of a PF in the truest sense of the positionless offense. Karo is strong and has great finishing on a power-move. For a true PF to excel, they have to be able to use their power from the "set"...very few true PF's would be effective in a FB offense...The one that immediately comes to mind who would excel is Bashara Graves,,,in this offense you need :

Two very good combo-guards
Two true SF's (Rickea would have loved this offense, IMO)
and one very mobile, shot blocking center who can also score in transition and off of the dribble...Jillian will be perfect for this offense in this offense bc she is more of a Stretch-four with handles

Top players want to go to schools where they can be developed for the WNBA. The last two coaches were not great in the development area. Horston’s natural athleticism and skill set gave her a chance to be successful in her rookie year in the WNBA. Jackson had the it factor when she arrived at Tennessee, which will help her succeed in the WNBA. I hope this new staff is adept at developing players who must be developed.

This /\

Jackson only had to adjust her "mentality" not her game
Once she heard the right words, she continued to climb

Graves = one of the all-time greats and a true lady vol type of player.

I’m actually wondering if Puckett can play this uptempo style

I have watched her run and she has a second gear,,,but not for a long outing 2-4 minutes per stretch and she will be fine...more than 4 would be pushing it

She has to "go into" that second gear though,,it is not her wheelhouse

she has already proven she is not duplicating Kellie's path, in that her target recruits are not Glennville players,,,unlike Kellie she is going after SEC caliber players
This is where Kellie made her mistake and anybody who knows BB would see that.

And if you judge a coach by one game, then which game did you judge Kellie by?
Probably the ones against South Carolina, recent and past. Kellie is the only coach in the SEC who has beaten South Carolina in the last couple years and is really the only one to be competitive with them as well. I think coach yo may have given them a scare last year, but that's it.

Seems like from their years in the SEC.. Coach Tubner and Coach Lazo have no less than the same contacts if not better contacts than Coach Williams.

I’m glad she found a decent job.. but acting like there is some sort of downfall or disadvantage for her going to Mississippi State is laughable.

Nothing wrong with supporting a former coach but no reason to put out a false perception. Again, these new coaches in two weeks going into three weeks at Tennessee have recruited at a more substantial rate than the past 4-5 years.
2.3 million NIL availability makes a big difference.

Wonder how Rae Burrell managed to go from the 47th ranked player in her class to a first round draft pick? Jordan horston was a walking turnover her first two years who develop both her skill set and became an elite defender. Without development that doesn't happen. Some of the best top ranked players who ended up in the wrong programs with the wrong coaches never saw the W. The fact that she has four first rounders in 4 years speaks more volume than you seem to give Kellie credit for.
