Sometimes a bandaid is all that is necessary and Rickea was the exception, not the rule.CJ, that is some impressive revisionist history. When KJH took over, the free agent, immediate eligibility transfer portal was not in existence. Kellie's main task was keeping Horston in the fold and minimizing roster loss.
She began with Burrell, Davis, Horston, KK, Jazz Massengill, Zaay Green, and Key. That is 3 future first round WNBA picks. I believe KK was also drafted in a later round and if Key had not health problems should would have been at least a 2nd round pick.
Kellie certainly went after SEC caliber players but as discussed ad nauseaum on this board, she could not sign enough of them.
Fair to say she should have done better with her initial staff hires. Bringing over her Missouri St. staff in total was a mistake but she shook that group up after (2? seasons).
And if the portal is a bandaid, a whole lot of teams are covered in them. I will take a Rickea jackson bandaid any time.
But portal players are not foundation players.
Indeed she had talent on the bench,,,and did little with it bc her system was not a system at all. In fact everyone on this forum berated her for the "stand around and jack up a bad shot bc the shot clock warranted a desperation attempt" offense.
Coach Kim comes in with a totally different system and from what I have seen in this short time she has proven to be a closer, both in portal and in getting this job as coach of one of the top known programs in the BB world with but one year of experience.
There aren't many coaches with one or no D1 experiences who can shock the nation.
