2024 TRANSFER TRACKER

At first it was “CKC would bring her entire Marshall staff”.

That didn’t happen.

Then it was, “CKC won’t be able to recruit P5 players and will bring some players from Marshall”.

That didn’t happen.

One month in, CKC has added Four P5 commits with starter experience that have accolades on the collegiate level, two elite SEC assistant/recruiters, and three assistants that can coach/teach her system.

Now it’s she won’t recruit any HS McDD All-American in a month. Lol lol lol. That’s worse than hot air on VN.

with the portal like it is now getting a 30+ HS recruit isn’t that big a deal anymore.
Apparently our AD thinks its a big deal; not doing so cost Kellie her job. Failure to recruit hs also completely wrecked roster balance, which the current staff has done a really good job restoring.
It looks like schools will soon be hiring players (1year/4 year contracts??) and maybe unlimited scholarships so who knows what it will look like in 3 or 4 year
Boy that's the truth. Have ya'll seen the settlement the NCAA agreed to? I saw a really good, thorough article about it but it's so dang complicated I couldn't even read half of it. Looks like billions in back pay will be involved, schools will pay a base salary, and non-revenue sports are almost certainly gone. Unlimited scholarships are very likely. There's a big debate about whether Title IX will apply; schools are desperately looking for ways around it. They have zero desire to revenue share with women's rowing.

What's laughable is not understanding the nature of the forum you're posting on. No one here thinks they're telling the coach how to do their job. Nor making any difference whatsoever in the real world. It's an internet sports fan forum so posters give opinions, whether backed by coaching experience and knowledge or not. That's all.
If you're trying to tell me there aren't keyboard coaches on here I'm laughing at you now

Of course there are keyboard coaches on here. Again, it's a sports fan forum, that's exactly what it's for. I'm just surprised anyone is all outraged that folks on a meaningless sports opinion board post opinions. Certain things are stipulated when you join. You're coming to the tea party and being mad that tea is served.

Getting a couple top 25 HS recruits is pretty important still but with the portal like it is now getting a 30+ HS recruit isn’t that big a deal anymore. It looks like schools will soon be hiring players (1year/4 year contracts??) and maybe unlimited scholarships so who knows what it will look like in 3 or 4 years.

The mistake Kellie made was acquiring SEC level portal players and MVC level HS recruits
That is a recipe for failure
When the incoming portal players far exceed the foundation players,,,BOOM

They acquired who they could get fm HS. No use opening the can of worms of why the level they could get fm hs was so much less than what they got fm the portal, but that's what happened. The previous staff identified elite hs talent well and got them as far as multiple visits only to lose them. This is what the new staff has to improve on.

Ruby Whitehorn decision was between Baylor, Florida State, and Tennessee.

She left Clemson.

Who in the world would believe a coach from UT Chatt going to Clemson of all schools needing talent would not want a player of Ruby Whitehorn caliber to stay?

That is one of the most bogus rumors posted on VN.

Her decision took long because that is how she decided to handle it had nothing to do with another player.

And as already stated, four P5 players in one month signed by CKC also eliminates this “players don’t know who she is label”.

These players and parents are not influence in any way by message board discussions.
Coach Caldwell can recruit.. that is a fact.
Yes those schools including just staying at Clemson. Moore committed to Clemson on May 12 2024 and Whitehorn committed on May 13 so that pretty much tells you that she was waiting on what Shawn Poppie was going to do.

Last season Moore had 15.3 ppg, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists compared to Whitehorn's 12.3 ppg, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists so Poppie definitely choose Moore over Whitehorn because he believes she was better and fitted his system more. Poppie is also a good recruiter by getting Anya Poole from North Carolina, Loyal McQueen from Alabama, Tessa Miller from Belmont, and Summah Evans from Mercer and of course 3 carried over from UT Chattanooga so it seems that you underestimated him.

His coaching record in 2022-2023 was 20-13 and 2023-2024 was 28-5 so this coach is no slouch. Saying all of this though, I definitely believe Caldwell is the better coach because she beat him when she was at Marshall 79-74 at Chattanooga during his year 2.

Caldwell did a excellent job recruiting 4 really good players from the transfer portal, but there are some transfers and recruits that she wanted that did not come here. Some of that has to do with she became the coach in April when a lot of these kids are already being recruited from other schools like Imari Berry and she had a lot of work cut out for her for getting the coaching staff together and keeping Tennessee's roster but most of it has to do with some of them saying" Show me that you can win at this level" like Dauda, Barker, Leilani Kapinus, and Aaliyah Nye. and she will definitely make that happen and I believe coach Caldwell will take Tennessee to be number 1 in the SEC very soon! I actually wont be surprised if we beat South Carolina this year...

Every player has different reasons for not choosing a school, some of those things are one school outbid another, the player just wants to go to that school or geographical location, they might want to play with certain players or friends. None of us know the reason unless the player tells us.

A 5’6 guard from a mid-major impacting a 5’11 guard/wing decision is comical.

Ruby Whitehorn decided between Florida State, Baylor, and Tennessee.
Visited Miami. Canceled a visit to LSU, a team that had her high on their list according to their local sportswriters.

Whitehorn was/is more coveted than any player in your post and yet you are here posting rumors.

Hold on to your theories.

Wonder why anyone isn't going after this player 6'3" tall shoots over 40 percent from the three and shot 47 percent as a sophomore. She played against some good competition at North Dakota State. 88 percent free throw shooter. 5 rebounds per game. Looks like a good pickup to me. Yet she is still available.

Again, there is no reason that HS players are inherently foundational players and HS are something on the periphery.

Was Pissott more "foundational" to the team than Jackson or Powell?

You build a team around the players you have. With the portal, there is no guarantee that you have a HS player for 4 years.

She committed to Kansas at the end of April: KU Sports

I liked her game last season, will be interesting to see how it translates to the Big 12.

Yes this is true but what weighs more on P5 players is what head coach will get me to the next level (WNBA) and who is winning (South Carolina, Connecticut, USC) Tennessee is in a show me phase for some of these recruits and transfers and I have to say Caldwell did one hell of a job in the transfer portal. Most of these players I mentioned had friends in Tennessee and lived near the UT area, but they do not know how good Caldwell is as a coach. Once Caldwell starts winning, most of these recruits would had choose Tennessee, or had Tennessee in their top 3, 5, 10 or whatever which is elite status.

When players become full-time employees, that will mean the schools can fire them, right? And players can come to play ball only and drop the "student" designation.

Also, won't players be allowed to be employed for as long as the school is willing to pay? Taurasi could still be playing at Connecticut.

If you can recruit then you can recruit…. Its really that simple… it does take a little bit to build relationships with some players though.

Ahh yes! But even employees have rules and absolutes which they abide by for their employment. Last I heard, there was still a 4 year eligibility rule in place (outside of covid 5th season of course).

There is a big difference between building a house and turning a house over... There is equally a big difference between the foundational player And one that's only gonna be there for a season Or possibly 2

Eligibility, as far as I can tell in this brave new world, will still be in place. The issue is not a Taurasi, but a one and done player who decides that he/she wants to return to play college ball. Someone like LeBron still has 4 years of eligibility and only his pro status would have kept him from playing college ball.

Now, maybe he leaves the Lakers to play with Bronny at the college level --it would make more sense for Bronny.

[Candace has a year of eligibility left to. Just saying that CKC might want to float a few inquiries.....]

Creek's other question about firing college athletes is an interesting implication. I would imagine these scholarships with pay contracts will have to be very specific about the terms.

Top recruits might demand a no-fire clause but perhaps schools might also negotiate that players can't leave early or transfer, without incurring a financial penalty.

Once athletes are employees of the school, rather than free agents, which has been the NIL situation, many of these relationships may change.

I posted this before but I think it is worth pondering. Most employees at Universities are not students. If an athlete just wants to play sports for U of $ but does not want the hassle of taking classes, why can't the school just hire him or her directly? It is not clear me that college players have to be student-athletes anymore.

With every new ruling, it feels like college sports is devolving. I am sure that is one reason why the NCAA hoped the NIL path could circumvent the complexities of direct payments to athletes from the AD.

You raise many good points. The NCAA, in an attempt to evade much greater financial liability,
has offered a settlement that, if approved by a judge, could have a great many unintended consequences.

— Would other college students in recreational groups such as symphony orchestras be entitled to pay?
— Would foreign students on Student Visas be prohibited from playing sports as employees?
— Would students in union friendly states be treated differently from those in right-to-work bastions?
— Could universities insist on buyout clauses in students’ athletic contracts as a means to limit portal jumping?

The NCAA is desperate for Congress to set some guidelines. Without congressional action, we can look forward to a fine mess.
