2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

Uh oh! Hold the bus. This woman hatesthe midrange, allows only 3s and at the rims.

We clearly can't have this. Who hires a coach for Rickea that doesn't like a middy?

Edit to add this fm Mark Shindler, a really smart W analyst, saying this coach is more likely to adjust to the players' game, not vice versa. Otherwise why take the Sparks job? They literally have zero 3 shooters and are loaded w 3, 4, & 5 players who all have mid range game.

So, social media rumors are that Paige wanted LA not Dallas. She has the negotiating leverage of playing another year of college ball (and at a higher NIL salary than the W's rookie cap).

I am predicting that PB's agent forces a trade and Rickea, continuing her life in purgatory, winds up in Dallas where her job will be to rebound Arike Ogunbowale's misses and then kick the ball out to her for another shot.

Bite your forked tongue! The one foot fade away must live and prosper!

Actually, the idea of trading Rickea has gone thru my mind. I just can't imagine hiring a coach who hates her game. And it's not just Rickea's game that clashes, there are zero 3 pt shooters on that team.

Some have speculated Roberts played that way at Utah bc she didn't have any 3 level scorers and will change her game to suit the league, not vice versa. Otherwise would not have taken the Sparks job. She's known to be a developer of posts so that should help Cam.

Others, however, say Roberts is an absolute devotee to analytics, esp the one that says a 2 pt shot is a waste of time. Apparently Smeko who just got hired in Atlanta is the same. Rhyne Howard must be delighted. Speculation isthat this is the beginning of a change over in the women's pro game to be more of a constant 3 chucking game like the NBA.

Which would be a strange decision since the NBA has record low rating precisely bc its a boring chuckathon with little creativity. I hate that game, except when Dalton Knecht goes off in it like he did last night. Ya'll see that? 37 pts on about 80% 3 pt shooting!

LA is in a rebuild and leveraging existing assets for future draft picks (or a transformational player like Beuckers) seems like a path they could follow. I agree with you on the mismatch between the new coach and Rickea's game.

Actually I don't see Paige as a good fit for that system either. She has a very versatile game and I don't think she'd like being regulated to just taking 3s. She has a very nice mid range.

This coach should have gone to Dallas (and Paige to LA). Arike would be in heaven. But she's a terrible match for LA unless she changes her style. It would take years for them to trade for enough 3 pt shooters to make a chuck it up work.

This will be Rickea coach in Unrivaled. Former Laker asst, known as a player developer. He should have been the Sparks new coach! This team seems to be an early fave.

Well SDS has blown up another locker room. The investigation that some players (Loyd) requested apparently concerning Diggins abuse and coaches tolerance of it concluded with no conclusions today. And now Jewell is asking out. I just hate that Jordy has to put up w all this. I think she's close to Loyd; Jewell took Jordy under her wing and trained w her last summer. What a mess.

A lot of people were happy when Seattle signed SDS, but almost as many were concerned. Turns out the concerns were warranted. What a shame. Loyd was all-in for the Storm and was having a terrific run there -- UNTIL the Toxic Takeover. Ugh. The changes in personnel made in the offseason last year, which were supposed to result in making them championship contenders, have hurt Loyd's game and may end up costing Noelle Quinn her job. She was doing great -- until she wasn't. The changes hurt her, too, I think.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand WNBA basketball. The playmaking can be extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the decisions WNBA players make will go over a typical college player's head.

WHAT??? This has to be a troll or an AI. Surely to God she didn't just say all this? What an absolute witch!

She said basically, sorry to have to say it, but college players are just too stupid to figure out even the basics of guarding the wonder of me. No offense to them of course. Their incompetence is actually concerning to Her Majesty. Probably thinks it should be investigated. Again, no disrespect.

Sweet mother that's brutally insentive and arrogent thing to say. I can't believe it. She's previously been the model of decorum but this is outright trashy.

Must have been taken out of context! I think she was actually discussing the difference between playing college ball and doing quantum physics and then it all makes sense.

Lol she's talking about basketball IQ, not general intelligence, but it's such a funny and unnecessary thing to say that I kinda love it. She's basically saying "of course you have to face guard me, I can hit shots from 80ft away duh" with a hint of "y'all weren't on my level."

Give us more candid, real Caitlin instead of weird, center of other people's culture wars Caitlin, I'm liking this!

Now I don't think that part was true at all. The whole rest of the interview is all culture war Caitlin. Twitter is talking about everything else she said in the interview and no mention of low IQ snark at all.. In fact, it's all very thoughtful and nice, though it's going to drive the anti wokesters crazy. Hard to believe she'd just randomly veer off onto something so arrogant and mean spirited. She's talking about her former teammates after all. Hitting the "too small" gesture, but in relation to their minds. Jeeze.

Haha that was me heavily paraphrasing of course, but I actually enjoy this type of publicly arrogant/straight forward display because we know that's how she is on the court (and as mentioned, this paragraph has to be put in the context of the entire interview). It humanizes her for me.

The demands from her own fanbase for her to be a totally emotionless, "epitome of class" Mary Sue when she's actually a trash-talking baller shouldn't be her problem.

Glv98, you can link to the Time story from the tweet and that quote is in there. It was an odd edit, but it came right after a paragraph on her rocky early games in the W.

It is an odd take. The W is the elite of the elite so, of course, she is going to be played differently than in college. But I think SC in the championship game did a lot of those things. They were physical, they doubled her and so on (and LSU before that).

Probably a quote she would like to have back.
