2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

So this is the 'physicality' the W is so proud of. Also one of 3 times in this game that Wilson, the league's best player by far, was hit in the face, twice drawing blood. Ironically, that's Nancy "I'd punch her in the face" Liberman saying the foul has to be called. It wasn't.

Arike, who to me is an example of alot of what's wrong, said after this game that this 'physicality' always was and always will be what makes the W great, and those who don't like it should go watch golf. Alrighty then.

Arike is also a prime example of the ball hogging, me first game that also turns off alot of viewers. She is second in the league in scoring, but in the 30s in field goal percentage. I'm practicing my golf claps.

The Sparks are a hot mess and their coach is terrible, but Minnesota is on a tear this season. They have great chemistry and are playing fantastic ball on both ends, it's no surprise that a bad team wasn't able to shoot well against them.
Yeah but no one should be that bad from the field, not the whole team. The Spark's shot selection is hot garbage and they don't run any organized offense.

But certainly the Lynx are great and Collier is a joy to watch. They're my underdog fave to win it all.

I don't care for Arike, for the reasons you stated above. She usually takes three times as many shots as her teammates.

Ariel is doing what her team needs at the moment, the only other player that can demand shots is Sabally, but she’s not playing right now, for me Arike is the most exciting player to watch and one of if not the best player in the game.

She was an exceptionally dirty player at Notre Dame. Muffet “we do things the right way” McGraw half-assedly apologized for one of her more egregious off ball fouls by saying something about a “loss of composure”. She kicked, tripped, clotheslined other players and pulled their hair for good measure.

WNBA refs are absolutely baffling. That one would be a flagrant 1 in the NBA every time.

Are they incompetent or just negligent?

Apparently there's more crazy to play out:

And everyone just gets more hardened in their positions. Sheesh.

Tin foil hat me thinks someone in the WNBA publicity department is scripting all this. Much as it turns some of us off, I'll bet ratings for the next Sky/Fever game will be thru the roof.

Can't help but feel sorry for Clark. So much cultural stuff attached to her. What if all the F she wants to do is play basketball?

Well, everything is fodder for the culture wars, so why not this?

I would not be surprised if the man with a camera is a gonzo citizen journalist connected to a wingnut website.

Hey guys! I hope everyone is doing well.
We are doing some routine forum maintenance and I have been tasked with passing this along to you guys. If you could move all of your comments/traffic to the baseball forum for a few days, it would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your help and support in this matter.
Go Lady Vols!!
I am curious. What was the "board maintenance, please move your LV posts to the baseball forum" gambit really about? It seems like fake messages about "routine forum maintenance" are not in complete alignment with VolNation rules.

Maintenance has been completed back to the normal everyday bickering amongst yourselves.

It was a baseball forum joke, but if you want to push it, go for it.

Easy bro, "not pushing" anything. Just curious. Y'all on the baseball forum have a unique sense of humor I suppose.
Can we start over?
I’m really not an ass, I promise.
I’m typically laid back, open minded and thick skinned. Though rare, sometimes I can get emotional and passionate about a topic, that I’ll admit.
@madtownvol I apologize and hope we can move forward.

Despite getting a lot of high draft choices, they have done nothing in the playoffs, and I think Arike is responsible. I believe she has driven away players that have contributed, and if they are go to players the Wings trade them. Perfect example, Marina Maybrey. As a UConn fan can't stand her,but was a great asset in Dallas.

Thanks for extending the olive branch! We're all good....

Satou Sabally changes everything for that team, with her they are one of the best teams, everyone can’t have 3 number one overall picks and a finals MVP on their roster.

Your entire post was terrific, but I wanted to add my two cents about Bueckers.

She is an outstanding basketball player and, if she remains healthy, will likely be the heavy favorite to be named Player of the Year (again) after this coming season.

But as fine a player as she is, quite frankly her type of amazing play has been demonstrated many times by many players over the years, including by a sickening number of her fellow Huskies. Lol Breanna Stewart was good enough to lead her team to an unprecedented four national championships. Paige Bueckers is a great player, but I haven't seen from her anything I hadn't seen Stewart (or for LV fans, Parker or Holdsclaw) do before her. Kelsey Plum knocked my socks off. And these are just a handful of more recent outstanding players. I won't even go down the list of old-school Amazons of the court. Soooo many players over the years impressed me.

But Clark? She literally, several times, made my jaw drop with those freaking near-constant, effortless makes -- so often game winners, too -- of routine-for-HER shots taken so far away from the basket it was shocking. Never before had a player made so many people, so often, shake their heads in utter disbelief of what she had just done. Again. And again. And again.

I honestly do think it is mostly the sheer audacity she displayed in even attempting those shots with the same casual confidence most others take 10-foot jumpers with, that made her stand out in a way that neither Paige nor Breanna nor Candace nor Chamique ever did or, perhaps, would even dare. Frankly, I don't think either Auriemma OR Pat would have allowed it!

Bottom line: As good as Paige is, she is unlikely to make jaws drop because people are actually shocked by what she just did on the court. Caitlin did that. All the time. And it really made an impression on people.
Yes. People are ready to bestow “generational talent” and “Goat” too easily. Holdsclaw and Parker truly changed the game.
