Hard to believe we only have 2 seniors on this team.

I think this years team is actually better. I’m not saying they will win it or make it to Omaha.
Too soon to tell IMHO. Just impossible to replace grizzled vets who spent numerous seasons together like CMO, Burke, Kirby, Beam, Sechrist, Dreiling, Combs, Tears, Stark, etc. I love this team but the 2024 team was all time special.

True, but most of those guys weren’t seniors, either. Last year’s team had Zander, Kirby, and Stark, but those were the only seniors who made a significant impact. This year, it’s just Ensley.

Truth is, when you’re as talented as Tony’s teams are, guys just won’t be around as seniors.

Conclusion: TN is the youngest team in the SEC.

Facts: According to D1 Baseball, Georgia is the SEC’s most-tenured roster, with 3.11 years of experience on average. Tennessee is the youngest at 2.10 and Florida is at 2.13.

Conclusion: the move next year to 34 man rosters won’t hurt UT, since they only play 27 men with any material innings or at bats. However, it will only be harder to have intersquad scrimmages with Fall rosters capped at 38 (vs unlimited today but averaging likely around 52). I assume some of the managers will participate in the scrimmages which isn’t ideal.

Facts: Over the past 5 years, TN has only played ~26 players with any material time (defined as at least 40 at bats or at least 9 innings pitched). This broke out to be 13.6 hitters and 12.8 pitchers. The SEC average was 27 players (13 hitters and 14 pitchers).

I don’t expect many seniors due to MLB draft and portal. Last years team had many seasons playing together and just more overall experience. The trust, cohesiveness, and togetherness of playing numerous seasons together is hard to replace. Don’t get me wrong, the 2025 team is tremendous but the limited time together is the only concern I have. Granted, it’s hard to find a concern before SEC play begins.

At this point in the season, we’re further along in both pitching and hitting vs year last.

Agree. This team probably has more raw talent, but that team had a special cohesiveness and culture.

I’m not sure there will ever be a pair of Volunteers I love more than Zander and Kirby. I wouldn’t trade any starting pitcher in the country last year, no matter how talented, for Zander. He was a lock to win the big games. And Kirby was money in pressure moments. Talent doesn’t trump guts.

The only position players that had really played a lengthy time together last year was CMO, Burke and Stark, Ensley.

We are experienced in the most important parts (up the middle). I think we’ll be fine experience wise. We scrimmage so much in the fall/preseason that these guys get a lot of time playing with everyone

This is my guess on starting positions and lineup once the SEC starts. I think LF is the only open spot depending on Bargo keeping his K’s low. Abernathy has only K’d three time this season. I think Abernathy is the starting LF by the end of the season.

Tears was on the team for 3 years and Dreiling for 2 years. That still means/counts a lot. The pitching experience was huge.

I do think this year’s team may have a little more pitching depth than last year’s team. Let’s play a full sec schedule before comparing to much though Maybe the Kirby effect will show up in tight pressure moments later in the year.

Will be interesting to see what consistent high talent pitching in SEC play does to a few of these younger guys and their plate appearances. Clark reminds me alot of Curley in the beginning of last year, if I remember correctly there was a learning curve with Curley once they got deep into SEC play, not calling it a slump but Clark looks really composed so we shall see. Marin and Abernathy will be the most interesting to watch.

Agreed. Hard to get a good evaluation until at least 1/3 of way into SEC play IMHO. And even then it will be interesting to see their adjustments to our competitor’s adjustments based on their scouting reports.

I remember plenty of examples of kids who were crushing the ball until the scouting report revealed his weakness. It that weakness is not resolved, they won’t receive too many meaningful at bats. The SEC is certainly not for everyone.
Burke had to learn to lay off the junk away from him and take the ball the other way. When he did he became a 1st round draft pick.

Don’t do it. Let this team become who they become. It’s not fair to compare them to 2024 yet.
Yeah everyone was comparing the 2024 team to 2022. Saying it was impossible to be better than 2022. I don’t think y’all realize the factory being built in Knoxville. Again, not saying we go to Omaha or win the Natty. I will say there will be equal or better talent than 22 and 24 in multiple years to come.

Tony and Josh are basically getting whoever they want recruiting wise and in the portal. So we are going to be great for a long time. I just don’t think it is a fair comparison to compare any team to 2024. You could actually argue that team as the best of all time.

Tears and Dreiling played pretty sparingly in the field before last year was my point.

This team top to bottom is probably more talented than last year, but talent doesn’t guarantee you anything.
