2025 Recruiting

I bought a one-month subscription to Ball Out about a year and a half ago. It’s pitiful. A hodge podge of “writing” about fashion, food, and women’s college basketball. 😂 A VIP section, which costs extra, in the form of a message forum —like this one — with supposedly insiders answering fans’ questions about recruiting. It’s a scam.
I never click their links nor hit their tweets.

Who do we feel best about?? I certainly want all 3 or even 4 with Hurst. I'm not counting her in my question because in theory local product should give us a chance, but of the big 3 who do we have best chance at?
Great question. And, I doubt that anyone beyond the inner circle has a trustworthy clue, as I suppose it should be.

To be clear, the numbers, and circumstances, are against us, because, until at least next Spring, we're still in "What have you done ...lately?" mode, and our promising coach has Zero Wins (for us). While I believe she is special, and that she will be an amazing SEC coach, any signing brings an inherent leap of faith. Considering the competition, that's a tall order.

As for who or how many?
Grace Knox - Southern Cal - Beyond the obvious "things to do," there's Proximity - the young lady lives less than 40-miles from L A. So, it's home. And, that program appears stable and on the rise.
Texas - So much for Vic moving closer to home, winning a few games and riding off into the Texas sunset. They could win the '25 National Championship.
LSU - Something is working, and working quite well in Baton Rouge, and Kim Mulky can absolutely recruit.
Each of these teams has a recent historical advantage, and I doubt that we can out-NIL any of them; so, given that logic, we're third, or even fourth, of a four-team race. That's a lot to overcome.

Deniya Prawl - Probably still being courted by some of the heavyweights. So, is she possibly still open to a program on the rise? She visited! And, she appeared right at home in Knoxville, but she has that pleasant demeanor that plays well any or every where. So, she's a difficult read.

Jaida Civil - Incredible potential! So strong and athletic. But, as mentioned, she was the quiet one, which is not a bad thing, necessarily, but gives us little on which to even speculate.

Lauren Hurst. She has narrowed down to some very successful schools/Recruiters; and two of them in particular - Wes Moore and Courtney Banghart - are enough to cast doubt. And, those primary questions still linger: Does she want to attend school with big brother? Does she still plan to go the two-sport route? I'm sure this has all played out in Coach Caldwell's office, and at the Hurst dinner table.

And, this is particularly interesting. Brandon Clay acknowledges Lauren's two-sport potential, then adds that if she decides on hoops, well, look out! To be clear, I would not, nor am I suggesting that Brandon is trying to paint Lauren into a corner; however, he is really good at these evaluations, and he appears to see basketball greatness in this six-two Cleveland, Tennessee gal:
Brandon Clay Director of Scouting, Women's Basketball
"Hurst is a two-sport standout who was named the Player of the Year in Tennessee for volleyball for the second straight season in 2023-24. Don't be surprised to see Hurst attempt to play both sports, at least for a period of time during her career. She’s such a talented prospect that time becomes limited to get in the type of individual skill work that she’ll receive in college. When Hurst gets a chance to receive that on a daily basis, expect her game to take another step. Her talent, length, and upside all align with that happening sooner rather than later once she arrives on her future college campus. With the way the game is evolving, having Hurst as a fourth basketball handling option and perimeter defender makes a lot of sense."
*That last sentence points straight toward Knoxville.

Simple truth - we're left to hope that one, some, or all of these great players sense something very special about Kim Caldwell.

I think that playing time will be a huge factor in their decisions. We're up against some other amazing programs, but what we have going for us is we have 7 to 8 seniors graduating leaving a huge opportunity for these players to get immediate playing time.

Look at the depth at LSU and TEXAS..

Immediate playing time for Grace, Deniya, and Jaida is enticing!!! They will be a Lady Vol.. and so will Hurst.

They'll have to also be ok w a different kind of playing time than they may be used to. 10 woman rotation w play in short intense bursts instead of more extended stretches. Not everyone wants to play that way.

That rotation at Marshall went twelve deep. Points per minute is pretty consistent across the squad.

Lots of top players like to play at least 30 mins w a few small breaks, usually strategically planned around timeouts, quarter breaks, etc. Some are not fond of being frequently subbed for which in a 10 man rotation you def will be. Not saying they can't learn to love it or that there's anything wrong with it. But it's something they'll have to consider.

First four minutes to start each half and last four to end each half. That’s when they want to be on the floor, or should if they understand the game.

A few I've known say it's hard to get in a good rhythm with frequent subbing. They like stretches, like 10 mins at least. Maybe they'll just have to relearn. But the original point was playing time offered by the LVs right now can cut both ways.

I think that’s at least a part of what Kim refers to as her “system” and unlearning old habits. Certainly many other aspects but this one is demonstrably different than most.

No top player will come if they are getting under 30 mins, I would say u need at least 2 players that play around 32-35 mins and the rest can be moved around. As an example of those 2 type of players, I’ll use Kiki and Juju.

Yeah that's kind of what I was trying to gently say.

But maybe if super fast is indeed the new way everyone is going to play now, they'll just have to get use to it.

No player got over 32 minutes per game on average last year for the champs last year. The freshmen (and Kitts from the same recruiting class) all got less than 20 minutes -yet they were top players who came anyway. (I'll admit though that the top prospects are shying away for this year).

You guys hurt recruiting more than you help.. If you are an elite player you are not wasting minutes. And1 was spot on about south carolina playing time.... if you produce you get more playing time and the player that does not produced will be cut out of the next rotation.
