Will not be playing volleyball as a freshman, as they do not have a scholarship available and the scholarship counts against the team an athlete participates in first during an academic year. I would be stunned if she ever actually suits up for the volleyball team. She will be playing both sports at tennessee.
You got the #1 volleyball player in the State. Do you turn her down from at least trying?
Doesn't count toward schollies. I say, go for it.

But, see, that’s the problem. It DOES count toward volleyball scholarships.
NCAA rules require that a multisport athlete counts against the scholarship limit of the first sport he or she competes in during an academic year. Which means anytime that that she would participate with the volleyball team, she would count against the volleyball scholarship limit, not basketball.
Different time and we covered Kristin Folkl and Natalie Williams from the 90’s last week. Won’t really happen today given what has been covered extensively in this thread. The practice and conditioning rules have changed the game and even back then if you let an athlete the caliber of a Folkl or Williams or only had them for the 2nd half of the season. None of that ever translated to late season success for them to the level they wantedThanks for posting that. She was the player I remembered as a two-sport star. And I believe Vanderveer would qualify as a decent basketball coach.
The point is, and always was, that it's possible if an athlete has the right combination of talent, desire, and work ethic. And to think that all major college coaches would turn away such a player is preposterous.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with letting her pursue it. Just don’t think it’s a sustainable idea. As mentioned earlier by @DeerPark12 there are no scholarships for volleyball available for her freshman season.
If she wanted to do volleyball she would do it as a walk-on and they would be making big time concessions to basketball would be my guess.
The most important part of pre-season basketball practice happens right in the middle of the heart of volleyball. Don’t see Kim letting her skip conditioning and practice.
Curious to see how that aspect plays out but very glad she is a Lady Vol.
Go back and read what DP said. If she is on scholarship for whatever sport, the first sport she plays in that academic year is the one the scholarship is tied to. Doesn't matter if it's tiddly winks.Even if she walks on for volleyball? That’s what I see happening. Might allow her a reduced commitment to practice time with volleyball as a walk-on.
Still don’t think it’s a good plan but I appreciate her tenacity.

It dates back to decades ago when the NCAA first put in scholarship limits. Football programs would have additional players sign scholarships for track or baseball when they would really only be there to play football. So the NCAA required that a student athlete that is on scholarship has their scholarship count against the first team they participate for during an academic year. The idea being that football was the biggest offender and football always comes first in the academic calendar. The side effect is that multisport athletes rarely compete in fall sports unless it is their primary sport.
I have no idea what she’s going to do and neither do you. But the opportunity is there. It’s everything that the coaches respect and believe in her enough to give permission to pursue both if she chooses. Again, you and some others are signifying what is more complex.Does Eve Rackham-Watt know that? I’ll delete my account if she ever suits up for a volleyball match.
Yes. Who knows what her goals are? Only she does. Thanks for the clarification. Just don’t see how it’s doable for her.
Even from her commitment volleyball seems like an after thought. More of a “if we can find a way,” than a sure bet.
Maybe a practice player if she just really loves the game that much.
Welcome Lauren ...Yesss, we get another oneeee Let's get that Natty Go LVFL
