Chance Mallory is currently the No. 2 available point guard the the 2025 class. The 5-foot-10 Mallory, a senior at Charlottesville (VA) St. Anne’s-Belfield School is currently the No. 57 ranked player in the
2025 On3 150.
“I’m a floor general,” Mallory told
On3. “I try to get my teammates involved, and have faith in my teammates. To be a floor general, I’m trying to get my team the best shot, whether that’s for me or someone else. I don’t really watch a lot of players now who are playing now. I watch a lot of, like,
Isaiah Thomas and I study some old film of
Sharife Cooper.”
Mallory, who committed to Virginia in September, de-committed from the Cavaliers shortly after head coach
Tony Bennett announced his retirement in October.
“It was the unexpectedness of the decision for me,” Mallory said. “I just felt like the relationship I built with the Virginia staff weren’t really there after that. So I figured it was best for me to open my options.”
On3 was able to catch up with four-star
Chance Mallory to discuss the latest in his recruitment.
“I took an official visit to Miami after I opened up my recruitment,” Mallory said. “I also went on visits to Virginia Tech and Virginia. Those are the only three (official visits) I’ve taken right now.”
Mallory talks Miami
“They play a pro-style offense,” Mallory said. “Like a lot of ball screens and transition offense, and they tell me they feel like I would fit in very well with what they do. Coach (Kotie) Kimball calls me all the time and he tries to get me on the phone with Coach L (
Jim Larranaga) as much as he can, so that is nice.
“I’m a fast-paced guard, I like to push the pace and get in transition to get open shots. I love coming off ball screens and making reads, so I feel like I could fit their system well.”
Chance Mallory discusses Virginia Tech and Virginia
VIRGINIA TECH: “I mean, they’ve probably been my biggest recruiter for the longest time. They were my second offer I got, and they’ve been constantly calling me since. I went to Virginia Tech a week or two ago for an unofficial visit. It was nice to see the coaches again.
VIRGINIA: “It’s all the same. All the coaches are calling me and stuff like that, just trying to build relationships back.”
Upcoming Visits?
“I’m also talking with Tennessee and Maryland about setting (official) visits,” Mallory said.
TENNESSEE: “I mean, I talk with Coach (Justin) Gainey a lot, I know him very well, he’s been calling me a good amount. They have had a lot of small guards, like
Zakai Zeigler, and I feel like I could jump right in with how they use those small guards. With how they play, and what they’ve done, I feel like I could fit in very quickly with them.”
MARYLAND: “I’ve had a relationship with them for a long time. So after I decommitted, they were one of the first schools to come back in and see me. Do we are back to building that relationship. I mean, I play in Baltimore a lot, so I feel like I can fit with their play style, play tough defense and play fast-paced.”
In Chance Mallory’s words
“I think that I’m going to take some visits in January and maybe in early February,” Mallory said. “I’m trying to get through this season right now, trying to get the best of my senior year and then focus on my recruitment. I’ll probably commit like late February, or early March.
“The relationships I have with the coaches is going to be big for me. That’s why I committed to UVa the first time, I felt like I had those relationships, and then I lost them.
“I’m looking for a coach that is going to trust me and the way I play and let me make mistakes for myself. I want to go to a place where I have the freedom to play, and make mistakes, and all that.”
