You think it’s a lot of portal additions to fill spots?

There has been some discussion of seeing if Amari Evans’academic situation could be fast-tracked to get him to campus for the spring semester.

Based on what we know at this point, if the Evans deal does happen, it would simply be to get another practice body on the roster and also to jump start Evans’ development.

Technically, if he is enrolled and on campus he could play, but that’s not the plan based on what we have heard.

Based on some buzz we’ve picked up it feels like Tennessee made a strong impression on Virginia point guard Chance Mallory and his family when they popped in for an unofficial visit two weeks ago.

Originally committed to Virginia, Mallory—the No. 54 ranked player in the nation—re-opened his recruitment following Tony Bennett’s retirement.

Tennessee was involved with Mallory before his commitment and quickly moved back in after his de-commitment from the Cavaliers.

We don’t believe Mallory is close to making an announcement, but we do think that Tennessee is in a very strong position with this one right now.

Miami was another program pursuing Mallory, and they obviously took a hit with their head coach retiring on Thursday.

Virginia Tech and Maryland are also in the picture, but right now we like where Tennessee is sitting.

Mallory (5-foot-9, 170 pounds) is a diminutive guard whose game has a lot of similarities to Zakai Zeigler.

The success that Zeigler has had in this system has not been lost on Mallory.

Yes and a natural fit to replace ZZ. It's about the perfect situation for us, and if he's been paying close attention, him, as well.

Yep. You’d think it would be a pretty easy sell.

“Come be part of a current top 10 basketball program that returns only 1 single scholarship guard (who’s currently a true freshman).”

I can’t think of a better situation if you’re looking to get immediate playing time and not sit on the bench.

Think they’d still look to add guards in the portal, but obviously Mallory would likely be in the boat before that happened.

I mean….obviously they’d still look to add guards lol. I don’t think we’d want our entire rotation to be true freshmen and Boswell next year. I was just using that quote as an example of how easy the sell would be for Mallory. This is going to be a roster void of established guards next year. Not many places to better to go if you’re looking for early PT.

Vols are going to desperately need scorers next year with Okpara, Phillips, Boswell, Estrella our returning guys.

At least one high scoring wing and one high scoring guard. Rest of the lineup can be filled with freshmen + bench guys. At least our front court should be set.

I would take Chance Mallory in a heartbeat. He seems like a Rick Barnes kid, and if he was committed to Tony Bennett, he's obviously committed to playing hard on defense. At his height, he's not an NBA risk. I would feel just fine about our guard situation with he and Boswell.

Yes and prolly a better scorer tbh, but prolly not even close to the same defender as ZZ.

Reminds me of Devan Downey from South Carolina some years back.
Really ? Devin Downey was a walking bucket. There's a story I read somewhere, that Downey lit up CJ Watson, on DD's recruiting visit to UT. CJ was absolutely furious and just couldn't understand how DD just continued to score at will, on him.
