2025 Target List

That’s the other thing folks need to consider about a mid year addition, is he good enough to take a spot next year also? I’m fully aware scholarships are year to year, but other than a 1 year transfer you aren’t recruiting kids to be here for 1 year and then cut them, something to consider also.
Considering we left 2 open spots this past year and I imagine we have some spots to dish out even for next year with all the seniors graduating.

Pre-NIL I agree 100%. Now, I don’t know anymore as it’s trending to become a huge roster turnover each season. If players show no loyalty to coaches, how long before coaches do the same to players? Time will tell.

It’s not unheard of, but I don’t think you want that being the narrative either, showing no loyalty to someone who has done nothing to you

No I was just saying I'm less worried about "wasting" a scholarship this year even if it means it'll be used next year. In portal and NIL era seems like filling and keeping full roster will be a challenge.
I gotcha, I just don’t think coaches are going to recruit a guy with multiple years of eligibility in hopes of using him for 3 months, maybe there’s examples of this but I can’t think of many.

The last five to six years, it seems like a lot of the players have been short term rentals or tryouts. Even if you don't take the NBA guys into consideration there are bunch of guys. BJE, Cam, Freddie, Ticket, Pember, Walker, Diboundje, BHH, Burns, Tobe, Tamba, Powell, Anosike, Bailey, Ledlum.

Few of those weren’t 1 yr rentals. And several others weren’t a loss. Sometimes less is more

I adjusted my quote to short term rentals. Tobe, Bailey, Pember, and Ticket were here two years. Cam and Freddie were here 1.5 years. However, most of these guys that have been in the program lately aren't staying that long. My thought process is bring a guy in and give him an opportunity to prove himself, if doesn't make the cut let him go.

Just not many dudes with the cloth to play for CRB in todays bball. Imo

ZZ, Mashack, Phillips and Estrella will probably be the last we get to watch and enjoy.

With 15 scholarships available next season, I say go for it. We'll have what, 9 or 10 open after this season?
Not sure it has been passed but regardless, I wonder if coaches really want that big a roster . Over Half your team won’t get regular playing time. Hard to keep everyone happy and likely to have a revolving door of players transferring out if they do not like their potential for PT. We have 9 healthy scholarships players and having questions about keeping Dubar happy.

Unless you’ve got insane NIL budget my strategy would be 10 “scholarship” players, give or take, and 5 instate/staff connections who are probably LM to MM types, but that want to play for you and will come on the cheaper/free to be at a big school and willing to compete. 13 was already too many on scholarship with kids no longer wanting to redshirt, if they go to 15 you’ve got to really rethink strategy.

Given Tennessee’s place at our near the top of the college b-ball food chain. We can pick and choose from the best MM players to fill any needs we have pretty much every year. These are players that have proven they can play at this level and likely more developed than almost anyone coming out of high school. Makes recruiting freshman and developing them over a couple of years hoping they turn into contributors unnecessary. I still want to bring in high schoolers and hopefully have some stick around for 4 years and be VFL, but it doesn’t seem like the best strategy overall. Makes the need for more than 10 scholarships seem unnecessary.

This is literally on the NCAA's own college recruiting website.

"Starting in the 2025-26 school year, NCAA D1 men’s basketball teams will have a roster limit of 15 and will be able to offer 15 scholarships. Basketball will now be classified as an equivalency sport, which means coaches can decide how to split those scholarships into partial or full awards for their recruits."

I didn't realized that had changed.
