2025 Transfer portal - players leaving the Vols

Some of these guys are killing me. I can't wrap my mind around leaving when you see significant field time on a top 10 team that is only getting better. How much better can the money be at another team? The probability of taking a step back is horrendous.

Money. there was no doubt that money would end up being the major driver once unlimited free agency was granted. Its wide open and that is more important than anything else to these players, these players being college kids not just Tennessee

Nimrod is in the portal. This one surprises me

do not be surprised at ANYONE leaving. Its the way of the college athletic world today. Multi people have told me, anyone on campus could leave if the right school calls with an offer

In the scope of things we haven’t had anyone leave that was making a huge impact. Most players starting and doing well aren’t leaving. Smith, Webb and Nimrod probably the 3 biggest contributors but all were worried about not rising on our depth chart. Smith would have contributed but I think he can go somewhere else and play more. Nimrod and Webb can probably get more playing time elsewhere. 85-90 percent of portal players either leave small schools to move up in competition or leave big schools to get more playing time. Most players making big impacts or are expected to make big impacts rarely leave. Not saying it don’t happen just not very often and often times the player has other issues. We will pick pursue and pick up quality where it fits our needs. Some way over react, we have a great culture. I wish the ones pursing more playing time well.

I mean, I get it, but the money can't be that much better. I guess that if they are getting $200k and someone offers $500K, it's a no brainer. But to Get $500k to end up on a team like Louisville just seems like you're taking a big risk of taking a step back in quality of team and STILL risking not getting on the field. Are they intentionally taking a step down in quality opponent to have a better chance of being a standout player?

12.7 Athletics Eligibility Requirements.
12.7.1 Postseason and Regular-Season Competition. To be eligible for regular-season competition, NCAA championships, and for postseason football bowl games, the student-athlete shall meet all eligibility requirements.
12.7.1.1 Postseason Competition -- Midyear Enrollees -- Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a midyear enrollee (freshman or transfer) is not eligible to participate in postseason competition that occurs before or during the studentathlete's initial term of full-time enrollment at the institution. (Adopted: 6/13/18)

This cannot be the case for the playoffs unless you think Coach Hype and Austin Price dont know the rules. Hubbs and AP discussed this AGAIN on their Thursday mailbag show on youtube...and said again very plainly that Coach WANTS these players in the portal to play with the team thru the playoffs, and that it is up to them whether they play or not. That rule from 2018 is from before there was a transfer portal at all...

Here's the current rulebook, pg 52 is what I posted....still the same. Like it says mid-year enrollees...applies to incoming. There is no rule that prevents outgoing from playing but it raises questions about commitment and loyalty of those players. Withdraw and play, Nimrod and Smith?sure why not

the vast majority are only thinking money not their future. So many come from backgrounds with little. They get more money now than they have ever had and then other schools offer more. That is the incentive, not playing time, not development, not what the future brings. Not education.

A lot of these jumping the portal right now are 5th year seniors who likely won't get pro chances and they are in portal hoping to get another year of pay to play football in college.

Unfortunately, there is a narrative that when a player decides to transfer it's all because they want more NIL money. The NIL & transfer portal have changed the rights for NCAA players.

Most D-1 players where the stars of the playing field through high school. When they arrive at a D-1 school they may longer be the best super star on the field, therefore they do not get playing time. Especially if they are on a team with a talented roster. Some come to the realization that they might have to switch to a school with lesser competition. Or even drop down a level to get playing time.

If that change brings them more playing time and pays them more then they are extremely fortunate. In most cases we don't know what they were making prior to the switch, nor do we truly know what they will make at their new home.

If a player believes in their heart that they can make it to the next level if they can get exposer playing at a different school, I can't fault them for living the dream. I don't like losing players, but I can't fault a player for banking on themselves because in the end it will become a business.

Good luck to all the transfers. Thank you for giving your all to Tennessee. Hate the game not the player.
This is the real truth! GBO

Kaleb Webb to Wake Forest. That can't be because they will be going to CFP next year. How many passes will he catch next year at Wake Forest? Must be NIL

I hope most players don't go JUST for the money. To me it's important who you play for and where. In my younger years, I jumped jobs just for the increase in salary, although I was satisfied at my current job. After about a month, I knew I made a big mistake. The culture at my new job sucked. I couldn't wait to leave, but I endured it for 5 long years.☹️ After being in the business for 38 years, it is easy to see that that was the worst company and people I ever worked for! Later, I had plenty of opportunities for a higher paying job, but I liked the company I worked for and stayed with them for 20 years.😊

I wouldn't let someone play that wants to transfer. That could be a cancer.

What if they decide to stay after playoffs?

The players understand if someone is doing it for the right reason to better their position or for life changing money or for the wrong reason of just a small raise.

I will trust the coaches and players to decide who they want to go into battle with and will choose not to condemn someone’s decisions without all the facts.

He did. Some of these guys have talent. It’s just you only have so many opportunities with a team before you get passed up and find yourself buried at the bottom of the depth chart. At that point you’re just not going to get an opportunity here.

He’s buried on the depth chart and was passed by this year’s freshmen immediately. He’s never going to play.
He has potential to be dedicated extra point injury guy, otherwise he's not seeing the field anytime soon, if ever.
