Felix and JP should be good for the 5.
I think the offensive production has to come. We can't drop the ball in the paint to Felix with his back to the basket and do little more than pray that he puts it in. He just doesn't have post offense, and he's in year #3. Doubtful that the light just suddenly comes on. We need a skilled big man that can score the ball. Maybe JPE becomes that, but he's got to get healthy, first.

Some of that could be blamed on Igor, he disappeared as the season progressed.

We need guys like Karter Knox at the guard position.... strong/tough and someone willing to push the ball up the court and drive to the basket.
Speaking of Arkansas players, I would love to find a guy like Brazile to play the 4.
If we had him instead of Igor no telling how good we could have been this year.

Lots of ways to construct a team. We just need some balance. We need an inside presence to combat games like today when the outside shot wasn't falling. We need defenders, rebounders, and guys who can go get a bucket.

It just feels like in every one of our NCAAT losses, we've failed to combat an area of weakness due to a hole in a certain area that had been a concern all year, but finally reared it's head at the worst time.

We can't have zeroes like Milicic, Dubar, and as bad as I hate to say it, the player Cade Phillips became over the second half of the season. Those guys can't be significant-minute players for us to reach the next level if they are going to be the liabilities they were. Houston doesn't play a single player like that. Duke doesn't play a single player like that. Florida doesn't play a single player like that. Those 3 guys played 39 of 200 minutes, today, and contributed 3 points on 1-7 shooting and 9 rebs, 2 assts, and 2 TOs.

Spot on. Too many roles sans scoring production to get over the hump.

Great post . . . And true.

We were reliant on Gainey / ZZ / and Lanier to score . . . If all 3 scored . . . We won. 2/3 we were in tight games / probably lose to a really good team. 1/3 we lose.

Today it was just Gainey. We had zero production anywhere else.

And add to it - Mashack was a total liability on offense. AWESOME defender . . . And fun to watch. But having him on offense was like playing 4 on 5.

What this game showed me and probably Barnes is that next year's team needs more shooters.

I'm actually surprised at how well we performed this year and how deep we went in the tourney with just one main shooter Lanier.

I think you need at least two shooters. The defense will always be there, but we just got to get some scorers.

Teams knew that the ball was going to Knecht and they knew that the ball was going to Lanier.

I consider this year as a major success. The team unfortunately had their Alabama moment and couldn't hit anything

Gainey turned into one this year. He had some big games. But more would be nice.

The team does not need just shooters, you need guys that can score at all three levels. A shooter can be guarded, you just force them to drive the ball. A scorer is harder to guard because if you force them off the line, they will just drive the ball and attack the rim or shoot a mid-range jumper. You got to have guys that can at least score on two levels and this year there just weren't many guys that could score multiple ways.

Versatility, versatility, versatility

I would say our major issue for quite a few years is we don't have enough ball handlers. This team had 1.5. Gaineys improvement saved us from being much worse this year. Only other player that could create any O besides ZZ.

love ZZ but I think the biggest takeaway from this is we need more size and shooting on the perimeter. It seems like Gillespie and McKneely are a shoe in though they arent the largest guys but I won't complain

JPE could be that . . . But when guys are hurt / injured and seem to be injury prone . . . You can’t depend on them for a rebuild. Agree with your assessment.

So who are we most likely to add from the portal?

I have heard about the McKneely kid, but I really don't know much about Gillespie

Who else besides them and what does next years team look like?
