2025 Transfer Portal Thread

Good call. The youth of Duke crumbled when things got tight and Houston’s experience, both on and off the court, stepped up.
I had a feeling Duke might let that inexperience show against Bama, who has multiple starters (4, IIRC) playing their 5th year of college basketball. Bama just couldn't throw it in the ocean the way they did against BYU. Sears was especially bad.

Houston, from a toughness standpoint, is a completely different animal and has experience to boot. When Duke flinched, Houston flexed. The 6-pt possession when Duke was up 14 was the turning point.

This is fair, honestly. Aside from Kennedy Chandler, the Vols under Barnes haven't had the greatest of luck depending on highly touted freshmen to be big time contributors. Keon and Springer certainly weren't bad, and I give a lot of grace to freshmen and young players during that 2020-21 COVID affected season. But still, KC is probably the only 5-star caliber player under Barnes who has lived up to the billing, and almost all the highly rated post players we've landed have struggled to be truly impactful right away.

Ament would be a different caliber of freshman post that we've ever landed under Barnes, but I don't think you're wrong for being very skeptical about relying on him and Evans if it comes down to Evans also having to play a lot of minutes as a freshman.
I agree with both posters with one caveat as stated. Barnes puts them through the ringer to help them find their selves and the system. Where most coaches throw them out on the court to find and adjust the system to fit them.

Punter also listed as 6'2" at UT and played PG...no one was comparing them as the same player. The point was made that Punter was a score first point in his 1 year under Barnes but didn't take near the volume of shots as Chaz/DK. So it's possible to see offense without 500+ attempts on a Barnes team.

TJ Ford is another example and closer resembles Gillespie in size/game (Gillespie is a better outside shooter though).
This says he’s 6-4.

There’s no way he was just 6-2 at UT. Nonetheless, his game was (and is) that of a SG, not PG. He was forced to be the primary ball handler because we had no PG. But he was not a facilitator. JG is a true PG. It’s a bizarre comp.

I was there for the game and they dominated us. There is a reason we did not look good, and it was them.
To a degree, yes. But we also missed open shots. Hell, we air balled wide open shots. And they didn’t defend missed free throws. Tennessee just came out tight.

That’s not to take anything from Houston. They’re awesome.

I wish I had not used the word "dominated". That was not what I really meant. Maybe they "smothered" us is a better description as it appeared to me as if they got into the heads of TN.

Yeah Tennessee missed plenty of open shots.

On the Rodney Rice front, nothing has changed. An intermediary reached out to Rice's father to set up a Zoom tomorrow. That's still tentatively planned, but Williams hasn't confirmed, Rice has yet to hear from him and it's been three days. He and people close to him, understandably, are taking it as a sign he's not part of the plans.

A Monday Zoom call between Buzz Williams and Rice has been set up by an intermediary, but Rice has not heard from Buzz in the three days since he was named head coach and they feel it’s a sign he’s not part of the plans for next year. Nothing was stated about Rice and other schools, including Tennessee.

I mean…UT Media Guide is a better source than Wikipedia.

Again, they aren’t a comparison. Punter was an example of a similar sized guard who didn’t take 500+ shots to score.
