'21 WA PF Paolo Banchero (Duke Commit)

I wonder how much the “Springer being out of shape” is being used to push and motivate him, like Barnes would do with Grant and Bone.

@Atlanta VOL any kind of insight on this guy? A lot of positive smoke it seems the last few days
I have heard some very positive news on this guy as of last week. At this point seems we should land him...not a done deal like KC was but certainly heading that way. Will report back if I get word that it is really done.

Do you know his timeline for when he would like to commit, regardless of who it is?

Oh, and also, LET'S GOOOOOOOO! HUGE NEWS!

I know this is the Banchero thread, but any updates on Jabari Smith's recruitment?

Corey Evans when asked on Tennessee’s chances now with Chandler committed...

I mean, it can’t hurt and how could it? Tennessee has long been viewed as a potential dark horse for
Paolo Banchero and the Vols' position has only been enhanced with the commitment of his good friend, Kennedy Chandler, on Friday. Tennessee is going to be more than just a hat on the table whenever Banchero is ready to commit and may now be the team to beat for the top-five big man. Now, Banchero's commitment will not come easy. We are talking about arguably the best prospect in his class. He can wait as long as he wants before deciding, and that could be as early as next week or as late as next summer. Banchero has been vocal about visiting all of his finalists - Arizona, Duke, Gonzaga, Kentucky, Tennessee and Washington - one last time before deciding but that could prove to be difficult due to the continued restrictions on in-person recruiting. The Huskies are the local program and both of his parents played at UW. Arizona has continued to make Banchero a top priority. Kentucky could have an issue thanks to the departure of Kenny Payne, who was Banchero’s lead recruiter. Gonzaga is Gonzaga, so the Bulldogs are going to get a hard look. I keep coming back to Duke for Banchero. Coach K has made him one of the select few that he really wants in the 2021 class and that could strike a chord with Banchero.

It is going to be a sprint to the finish with still no clear-cut favorite for Banchero. However, Chandler’s decision could be just what Rick Barnes needed to take another leap in the recruitment of the five-star.

I don't think Washington or Arizona are really all that in this hunt. It seems like Evans is just covering his bases and talking about each finalist. Lately, most of the smoke has been around Tennessee, Kentucky, and Gonzaga. I hope this thing doesn't drag out till next summer, but who knows.

The words "no clear cut favorite" stood out to me. I still think the odds are against us based on a number of things, but we never know what a recruit is thinking. Speculation is fun, but it's also stressful. For me, whether we get Banchero or not, our overall upward trend is a very good thing for the overall health of Vol basketball.

I found the comment about Duke to be telling. Kentucky has been the presumptive favorite for a bit, and that likely changed with Payne leaving. Much of the conversation about Gonzaga, Arizona, and UW is the same. And it had been hinted that a Chandler commit would put us in a good position, which it no doubt has done. That said, different sources, but the Gonzaga writer mentioned Banchero not enjoying the Duke experience or something to that effect, and I wonder if perhaps that is a bit overblown. No doubt we are in this, but I think Duke may be a bigger threat than we are giving them credit for imo.

I wasn't bothered by the "Coach K is prioritizing Banchero" comment. I mean if you're not prioritizing arguably the best prospect in the class are you really doing your job? No. Kentucky literally only offered Kennedy Chandler as their 2021 PG and made him a priority and we saw how that ended up.

Both players strong suit is the 4; however I think their positional versatility is a little different. To me it looks like Banchero has the versatility to potentially play some minutes on the wing if he can defend on the wing. Banchero has a very similar game to the new era Blake Griffin except not as bulky. I’m guessing Banchero is more interested in playing more minutes at the 3 than 5. Being able to play the wing would help Banchero’s draft stock. Smith reminds me of Kevon Looney; however I’ve seen some say KD. Smith seems more like he’s best as a 4 or 5.

Tennessee tried to recruit Griffin.

Most seem to think Washington is trailing quite a few schools...seems like Tennessee/Duke imo.

If I had to order...

1/2: Tennessee/Duke
3: Kentucky
4: Gonzaga
5: Washington
6: Arizona

He just seems kinda close to the chest and with KC not caring for the Duke environment, I thought it may not have appealed to PB either. I’d bet $$ that he doesn’t do KY tho
