'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

But the roster wasn't deep at PG. That was a glaring need.

At the 3 and 4, you have JJJ, ON, and BHH. Very different situation.

It's not the same situation, yeah, but Phillips is the #10 player in his class and a dynamic talent. It all depends on how he develops, but IF he is as good as advertised neither ON nor BHH are going to stop him from getting his minutes. Heck, ZZ was an under the radar talent coming in at a deep guard rotation and found a major role on this team. I'm not concerned about Phillips getting the minutes he wants here.

I can promise you if Phillips is as good as his ranking suggests, he will play major minutes. Just like Kennedy Chandler did the deep roster will not stop him.
I am one of the Rick Barnes fans who thinks he plays the best team players ... and he does not favor age and experience ... OVER defense and confidence the player can get it done.

But KC was a point guard and he was not trying to win playing time from anyone. The job was his to lose. So, I see the situation slightly differently.

Also, I could see UT giving Phillips playing time at the 2 ... if he has the college game to drive and finish at the rim. Hey but what do I know ... not a college bb coach.

I look for ZZ to develop more shooting range and accuracy and become a PnR guard. I am excited to see if BJ can push ZZ.
Would love for BTO to be right and Collins come to UT for 1 year!

My too early prediction ... we win 25+ games again during 22-23 season.

Phillips weighs less than 200 pounds according to his player profiles. He's not guarding the 4 unless UT is going small with their lineup.

The difference between his good games and bad games is big. He seems to have a concentration issue. When he’s dialed in, I think he can be a serious contributor. Other times, he looks like a near-sighted toddler swatting a balloon.
Yeah, I felt terrible about his injury. However, as you said, the spectrum of his performances is extreme. I still tend to feel that he could dominate against lower-tier guys, but looked really average against longer, taller teams. I’m not sure he will ever have really good numbers against guys with size.

How many back to the basket 4’s do you think the team is going to face this year?

That's fair, but if he is only in the 175-180 range, I think he gets bullied. Like another poster said, if he's up already over 200, then that's better.

I can see a lineup with JJJ at the 4 and Phillips at the 3.
6’8” 200lbs is his 247 profile, not sure how accurate it is but assuming it’s close a few months in a program at UT and 210-215 seems quite plausible.
With nutrition and S&C, 10-15lbs of good weight isn't that difficult to add in a few months unless you're always sick or injured like Fulky.

Just let JJJ guard the 4s then. He didn't have a lot of trouble last year in doing that. It'll probably involve switching a lot 3-5 if we have JJJ, Phillips, and ON on the court at the same time. If we need to size up we can always put BHH and/or Aidoo in for one of those guys.

Really hope he makes a decision soon. Auburn fans are convinced he’s already going there and we’re not even being considered. Would love to pull this one over them just to see their shock lol

Per ON3, Auburn is looking to replace Kessler. I don't think he fits that role.

That’s just a silly statement. They’ll sign him if he wants to sign. It doesn’t matter who he “replaces”. He’s a top 15 player.

I'm just stating what the article said. They were looking at two 6'10" Centers in the transfer portal. I think from NC State and the transfer from Morehead State.

BHH added 16lbs, Aidoo added 19lbs, ON added 22lbs, JJJ added 14lbs, Pember added 17lbs, Kyle added 22lbs, Fulky added 20+lbs (even with all the injuries and having covid twice)

I think Gaines is probably the only player under Barnes they wanted to add mass/weight and weren't successful at doing it.

Odd - unless Cardwell hit the portal they’ve got a big banger / rebounder / shot blocker on their roster

Caldwell is more of a bench player. They are saying Traore is supposedly sliding in Smith's spot.
Was a backup to a top 20 pick in this upcoming draft. I’d say he would have started for several SEC teams this year, possibly us being one of them
