'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

I believe this is the case. Just like in football, I am guessing there are discussions with Spyre about how much we are willing to pay. We had the money to pay the DT, Walter Nolen. But I don’t think the football staff believed in making a huge investment. It’s been stated from people who know that all UT programs have an ideal student athlete they are looking for. Of course, they want great talent, but they also want good kids, hard workers, and kids who don’t just use money as the motivation. If they are good kids and work hard, then the money is the product of their efforts. JMO.
I agree. Vols certainly have the money to pony up with any program in the country BUT just slinging money around for any kid with talent will probably lead to disaster in short order.

The potential starting QB who has to stay in college for a minimum of 3 years is potentially worth way more than almost any basketball recruit from a marketability standpoint unless they are Zion, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, etc. Just more visible. Even then if you get it right, the basketball player is only here for one year and we all know most on these boards don't watch the NBA so there isn't much chance to continue to build their brand in Knoxville.

On a side note, Nico appears to be a pretty marketable kid in general. I know it was all about football, but he seems to have the charisma and different look that makes him stand out in general. Which helps get a return on that investment especially if he ends up elite at his position.

One and done’s help our program in the long term. Kids want to see us putting players in the league. It’s worth it.

If they go on to be a star they do, but we haven’t had one of those yet. Tobias Harris hasn’t moved the needle for this program and he is the most successful NBA player this program has had since Allan Houston.

How are you measuring who does or doesn’t move a fictional needle, and by how much? How much do Durant and TJ Ford move the needle? Does Grant move the needle even though he stayed three years? Will Chandler move the needle? Where can I find the needle?

The needle is a metaphor

What they do at the next level is irrelevant. It’s on them at that point. Tennessee’s job is to get them there.

Well Lamarcus Aldridge was a year before Kevin Durant. Aldridge went 2nd and Durant mentioned part of his reasoning for choosing Texas was due to Aldridge and his success. Multiple kids have mentioned Kevin Durant as a reason they chose Texas or why they want to be coached by Barnes in general.

Care to keep playing this game?

I don’t know what game you’re playing— only that you’re playing with yourself, and I’m sure that’s familiar. Pretending like there is some measurable scale of single variable data that makes a kid’s school decision is stupid.

So you don’t understand the impact a player like Kevin Durant makes on a program (exposure, recruiting, etc) or a coach? You don’t understand why kids that think they are high draft picks choose to play for Cal? You think all 1 and dones hold equal value?

And judging by your response you haven’t been around HS kids at all. You probably think kids still choose a school because they grew up a fan. The game has changed old timer.

I do think Durant influences kids who pick Barnes. He’s literally talked to them on the phone and in person, as has Ford. No one associates Tobias Harris with anything. They definitely don’t associate him with this staff. My experience with high school kids is two of my best friends coach AAU teams, one has a D1 son, and I’ve refereed and coached HS for a long time. I know several NCAA assistants, including two of our ex-assistants. I have two friends I graduated with who are attorneys for coaches, including some of ours, and several friends who are agents. I hear more about kids choosing schools than I’d ever want to. My point was you’re oversimplifying an issue, and pretending like you can measure a decision on a single variable. You can’t. If kids had complex decisions two years ago, they are substantially more complex after the changes with the G league, the portal, and NIL. I know several kids in this recruiting class who have a minimum NIL deal required before they’ll make a decision. Phillips is a perfect example. On the merits of Barnes’ record of putting players like KD in the league, we’d have already signed him. Instead, we’re probably in third place unless we can meet his needs. There is no “needle”. There are many variables. It’s a new world, and we probably aren’t adjusting fast enough. That said, Barnes has always attracted great coaches and great players. There are elements now that are put of his hands. Danny White, and the money are going to have to up their game too.

Geez, with how quiet this one has been lately, I really don’t like our chances. I really hope to be wrong though

Both UT and FSU thought there were landing him the first time around only for him to end up at LSU at the final hour.

It's quiet because everyone thought they were landing him the first time and they didn't; so I think teams are taking a cautious approach on where they believe they stand with him. His recruitment is one that I'll believe it when he is signed and enrolled but until then I don't put much stock into what anybody says regarding his recruitment. That includes coaches recruiting him.

It’s dead quiet in this recruitment and there hasn’t been any new information from VQ about him in weeks, so I’m starting to think he’s going to randomly commit to some team out of left field that no one saw coming any day now.

If we get Collins and Key them I won’t be too upset. Just need those 2 guys to get the ball rolling and hopefully add at least 1 more.

Well, these young men need to realize they’re going into a league of 360+ of the BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD OVER THE LAST 10 years. It’s THE toughest league to make it big in in all of sports. Not a lot of slots open each year.

Actually VQ said today Tennessee is very much in it, and as of today it’s Tennessee or FSU with edge to Tennessee 🤷🏻‍♂️
