'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

Well….the Wade situation also isn’t apples to apples. The allegations include him paying hush money to the girlfriend of a player to keep her quiet about the “strong ass offers” and I have a pretty good feeling that isn’t something Rick Barnes is doing. So, the risk is probably very minimal if you aren’t doing shady crap like that.
He probably wouldn’t have resorted to that in the NIL era.

Yeah clearly “everyone’s doing it” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t risk. What is the risk?

So yes, will Wade is the victim of poor timing
I’m actually not sure it’s against the rules, schools can speak about NIL and put recruits in touch with folks, they just can’t broker the deal or be a pay to play from my understanding. So player x coming to town and a coach saying here’s blank from Spyre they’d like to talk with you about some NIL opportunities I don’t believe violates the rules…could be wrong.

Yeah I figured they could probably do that. And ok for coaches to talk to the collectives about who their top targets are? As long as they aren’t facilitating the deals? Or negotiating or whatever?

What are you hearing on Phillips, anything? I’m not hearing any confidence from Tennessee side with him visiting Auburn, but @Stoerner Fumbles seems to be.

Nothing that hasn't been mentioned already. Him visiting Auburn (not a good thing for us) plus the way his first recruitment went the first time doesn't give the staff any real reason to be confident.

I've heard the better NIL deal is being talked about but nothing concrete. This will also hurt people's feelings on this part of the boards, but Spyre/NIL is much more focused on football and getting them up and running currently than basketball and there is only so much money to go around.

He hasn’t said anything. But, he typically doesn’t say anything till the guy is about to commit. The fact he liked your post is enough for me to believe we’re going to land him. He was waaaaaaay out in front of all the Pruitt stuff before it happened.
This is also before any Auburn visit though. They’re going to get the last visit.

It’s not really funny at all. Bruce and his staff are better recruiters, the existing relationship with Traroe is there and they get the last visit. Not to mention a lot of recruits definitely prefer Pearl’s approach to playing offense over what Barnes demands. Idk about Phillips but I think BHH thrives on offense under Pearl.

BHH isn't going to thrive at Auburn or anywhere else if it's true he wants to play on the perimeter

This was overblown when he entered the portal imo. He’s not just gonna sit out there and Jack up 8 3s a game and I don’t think that’s what he’s expecting someone to let him do.

I don’t know that you can say literally this is our top target, although that seems a bit nit picky about what exact verbiage can be used…but if you’ve got some guys meeting with Spyre and others not meeting with them it’s not hard to put 2 and 2 together of who too targets are. I also don’t see there being any way for it to be illegals for someone to ask Heupel, “just curious, is so and so a take”, and him answering it.

Playing on the perimeter doesn't mean just jacking up 3's

You know we’ve blown their doors off the last two years in recruiting right?

This isn’t the end of the world, Phillips (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) is a business man. He’s never even been to Auburn, to my knowledge, so it makes sense to get down there if they’re supposedly one of his finalists and hear their NIL offer to compare it to UT’s, FSU’s, and USC’s

However, it didn’t seem like the second post he liked was very positive in our favor sadly

True. But, I’m going to read into the fact that he is lurking around this thread and liking posts about the recruitment. He’s normally very distant from the basketball forum. He doesn’t show up unless there is some smoke.

I try to be optimistic but even with a raised NIL deal I just have a hard time seeing him come here with his last visit bring auburn and the relationship with Traore. I really hope I’m wrong, but it’s hard to be optimistic because Phillips and Traore were already committed to the same team before, so it’s not an either or situation

It’s not even true. Barnes has won plenty of recruiting battles against Pearl. Keon Johnson was an Auburn legacy and he picked UT over AU.
I think getting beat out for Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler is where this mentality comes from. We seem to have trouble landing the elite mobile power forwards, particularly when we are up against Auburn. I’m sure Pearl will probably try to sell Phillips on being the next Jabari Smith.
If that’s the case, I hope someone reminds Phillips how often Auburn’s guards neglected to give Jabari the ball.

Seems like a big pointless charade.

I think we need to get over our collective BVS with Auburn. He very well could choose Auburn, but that university is a dumpster fire right now with their administration. They just tried to literally conduct a coup to unseat their head football coach after one bad season. Danny White has us rowing in the right direction and firing on all cylinders. I'm choosing to believe we're not going to continue to take a backseat to Auburn in all sports anymore. With NIL a thing now, their Cabin in the Woods advantage is gone.
