'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

It is rather frustrating that we just won the SEC Tournament for the first time in 43 years, we’re putting guys into the league at a rate not seen at the University of Tennessee in quite some time, and we’re consistently a Top 15-20 program right now, but we can’t seem to parlay that into any recruiting momentum in the 2022 class.

You could argue Collins is the only impact player we will add to the roster this off-season while losing 3 (BHH, Fulky, Chandler). Edwards is going to be very young and Key is TBD on his impact, too.

The only explanation at this point is Spyre really is focusing all their resources into football and basketball is being left behind. Either that or we really did whiff on Gainey and Clark.

very frustrating to say the least. let’s just hope and see if the staff can strike big time with the 23’ class. really need to get Edwards and some other top 100 guys.

We don’t know the details of the contracts. What competing offers are. Could easily be manipulated. And coaches technically aren’t allowed to be privy to the deals themselves. So theoretically they would never know
What was the new bill passed by Lee as it related to Spyre, not sure of details but something about TN officials being allowed to talk with Spyre reps, VQ acted like it was a big deal.

Hypothetically, if the guys at Spyre are Barnes haters, what would stop them from withholding money from basketball NIL deals. Or if they don’t like the “cultural” fits that Barnes recruits. It’s a weird dynamic
With that said, if the guys at Spyre didn’t like Barnes they wouldn’t have hooked up ZZ or have a 7 figure deal in place for Edwards.

At the risk of sounding too negative, this offseason is starting to feel like a real bust. I don’t hate the roster that we’re putting together for next year, but the staff’s high school recruiting has been very meh. Not to mention, our most hyped returning player AND biggest HS target are trending to auburn. Seems like everyone else in the top half of the SEC is landing dynamic playmakers and we’re sitting here with our pants down.
1. If your most hyped returning player was BHH that’s likely a toughen.

2. Landing Collins & Key is hardly what I would consider a bust or being caught with our pants down. Phillips unexpectedly came back on the market, if we don’t land him ok, but that’s no different than where things were with HS recruiting a month ago.

There’s probably enough blame to go around but, as many have alluded to on here in recent weeks, the assistant staff we have right now has been very underwhelming on the recruiting trail. I mean, the only high schooler that is coming here this year could’ve been convinced by anyone on this board to come play for Tennessee.
Transfer portal is recruiting, and let’s see what they do in 2023.

I don’t think whatever happened before ever rose to the level of a legally binding contract. And Spyre isn’t just one person but someone is ultimately calling the shots. It’s definitely not the coaches. Also not saying NIL won’t be a plus for our program. Just asking some questions.
I believe more than you think

All of that is fair, but it’s a simple fact that 6’11” big men with his athleticism and jumper do not grow on trees. I too was pretty down on him throughout the season, mainly because he never got his head out of his ass and never gave a full 40 minutes of effort. But the upside he has far exceeds anyone else returning on the roster next year. I’m not certain he ever reaches that potential, but it’s inarguably there.
Aidoo is taller and flashed a better jumper 🤷🏻‍♂️

I mean, the real pain in the ass of it all is seeing other SEC schools having great recruiting classes.... and then there's us. We're Tennessee fans, and we want to be great in everything, in every aspect. So to see other schools pulling in talent while we appear to be whiffing just sucks.
Transfer portal is recruiting, maybe we see how 2023 class goes?

I do think it’s obvious that NIL groups do not act independently of coaches, even with what some have said to the contrary. So should we now hold coaches responsible for “selling” a NIL group on a player just as much as we do with them selling Tennessee to a player? I’m not sure, but it’s something that will become more clear as we learn more about how NIL deals transpire over the years. I love Barnes and will always advocate for him at Tennessee, but I don’t see him being the type to press for a bidding war over a certain player, even in an age of legal NIL deals.

I think this is probably where things are…Barnes isn’t blind to NIL or telling recruits they can’t have a deal, but I think there’s also a level still of “I want to play at Tennessee” that he’s looking for. He’s not gonna push the guys at Spyre to get into bidding wars with opposing schools to get a kid and make sure they land him no matter what. Not saying this is exactly how it played out but for example with Philips…I can see the initial offer there and Phillips visits, LSU gets involved and makes sure they have the highest number, Tennessee is unwilling to bid against LSU. This time around Tennessee recruits him again, gives him a better offer than his previous one, he talks with Auburn who’s willing to better that offer and now he visits there, Tennessee is unwilling to bid against Auburn. This is obviously an oversimplified version, but I could definitely see that as being the case.

I'm honestly concerned about where we go to get a bucket in crunch time, right now. I think we desperately need JJJ to develop into a guy that can get to the rim at will, or recruit someone who can. Chandler was our best option, last year, and not a great one, at that.
This 100% is my biggest concern as well (assuming we land Collins & Key)….I think that’s a roster that is good and wins a lot of games, but like you in a close one when you need a bucket where do you go? Maybe Key is 100% and his ability to drive translates here? But yea, JJJ seemingly is the best answer on paper we have, or (hold your breath), Nkahmoua continuing to develop that little turn around down low.

I don’t disagree with either of these. This is a big reason I still like the team we have for next year (assuming Collins and Key commit) but I struggle to LOVE it like I did last year’s team. And while the doubts of BHH potential being reached are there, it’s gonna look really really bad if he does reach those heights on another SEC team.
I’ll be real surprised if Auburn lands Phillips & Traore and BHH is getting 30mpg

Yeah. And our biggest upside player left. And our 6th year senior. And our best assistant coach.
I’m not ready to make that claim…if Nkahmoua continues the trajectory of improvement he’s had he will be better than anything we’ve had, Uros slight improvement over Uros of last year, I’m fairly confident a healthy Aidoo all offseason can more than match what he and BHH combined for last year.

Not sure how BHH/Fulky are considered impact but Key likely is not?

Edwards and Holloway would be a great start

Holloway is crystal balled to Wake Forest. He has been for some time now. He was predicted to go to Auburn. I think he attended their game against Kentucky and he quoted the visit was a 10/10 and his mother loves the coaches there. These are teenagers and they constantly change their minds.

My personal hope is he comes in here and is pre injury Tyreke Key, because if he is he will be very hard to keep off the floor. If he is a 38% 3pt shooter or even near that he needs to be on the floor at the same time as Vescovi and JJJ as it will take a lot of attention off of them if he’s shooting well. I think he has the potential to be a very high impact transfer.
