'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

I care way more about basketball than I do football. Basketball will never ever reach the popularity, donations, passion levels, etc, etc, etc all day and night long, that football gets at UT. Anyone who says otherwise is just lying to themselves or does not look at anything Tennessee-related outside of the basketball forum.

The University still sells a sh*t ton of tickets after 10+ years of mediocre football.

Football is king no matter how great or terrible they are. It won’t change.

If you want evidence that this is what the people want. just look at the # of football related posts (football + recruiting) vs basketball related posts on VN.

I don't think any P5 schools make less for football than basketball. Even Duke. UConn hardly makes any money in either sport compared to most, but it's football team makes less than it's basketball team.

I saw somewhere that UConn’s athletic department is one of the most heavily subsidized in the country.

Louisville brought in $48m a year ago. Their football team brought in $47m.

Though UL is a bit of an anomaly. They're treated like a professional team in a city that lacks a major pro team while also not caring about football.

Their basketball revenue fell to 42 million this past reporting cycle. It was 48 million the prior cycle. Some of that is women's revenue as well, the men made 40 million. If broken down by profit, Duke, Louisville and a few others make way more on basketball vs football due to the massive expenses of football. Louisville only cleared 3 million on football and basketball cleared over 20 million.

Is there a D1 football program that generates less revenue than their basketball program?
In terms of just revenue, probably just a handful of schools that have really bad football or are not FBS in football. But there are quite a lot of schools where basketball trumps football in terms of net income (profit/loss) - football is actually a money loser at more schools than you might think.

ulian Phillips made his first visit to Auburn and the five-star basketball prospect said he is seriously considering Coach Bruce Pearl’s Tigers. Phillips is a 6-8, 200-pound high school senior who attends Link Academy in Branson, Mo.
“The visit went great,” he said. “Everything from the facilities to the campus is really nice. It was a lot more than expected being my first time to be in Auburn.
“They are definitely one of the top schools I am considering right now,” Phillips said. “I have got a pretty good relationship with Coach Pearl and the rest of the staff. He showed me a lot of what the system would look like with me playing in it and it is something I could fit in pretty well.”

Phillips, who is a McDonald’s All-American, is rated as the No. 18 overall prospect in the 2022 class by 247Sports and the No. 2 power forward prospect. He is also effective playing the three spot (small forward). His hometown is Blythewood, S.C. The prospect has been considering Tennessee, South Carolina, Southern Cal and Florida State and has numerous other offers.
“I still don’t have a final group of schools yet,” he said. “I do plan to go home and speak to my family about the schools that have been recruiting me. This is the last visit I have set and I will see if I have to take any more. I believe I should be able to cut that down soon.”
Phillips won’t rule out take an additional visit. “That is still up in the air right now,” he noted.
Asked what stands out about Auburn, he said, “The fans are crazy, the facilities are very nice. Coach Pearl, his track record speaks for itself in terms of coaching and winning, and sending guys to the NBA. Everything is great.”
Phillips said if he picks Auburn what would be the reason for putting the Tigers on top. “Just because how the camaraderie is between everybody. The coaching staff is really great. The basketball would be great as well. In terms of school the campus is very nice, the education is great and my parents like that. It would be everything I could ask for in a school if decided to commit.”
On his visit he spent time with point guards Zep Jasper and Wendell Green. Jasper is someone he previously knew from their contacts on the AAU circuit. Phillips also spent time with Allen Flanigan and met other members of the team.
Also encouraging him to sign with Auburn is five-star center Yohan Traore, who like Phillips had previously planned to play at LSU before Coach Will Wade was fired. He has since signed with Auburn. Traore texted the forward during the official visit by Phillips, who is highly-regarded by 247Sports director of scouting Jerry Meyer, who has this evaluation of the prospect:

“Long, lanky and athletic. Has a NBA athletic pop to him. Has a good feel for the game and a knack for coming up with the basketball. Outside shot is developing and expected to be reliable from beyond the arc. Good with the ball in the open court. Straight line driver who can deliver a pass on the move. Very effective going to his left (weak hand) and effective finishing with his left. High potential prospect who needs to gain weight and strength.”
When making a college choice, what will be the top consideration for Phillips? “I think the most important thing is to find a school where I can come in and play as a freshman and come into a system that I fit in, it fits me and I can do well in, wing games,” he said. “Ultimately, be under a coach who can help develop to my next dream, to play in the NBA.”

I’ll admit, that is less of a glowing review than I expected. The fact that he is still entertaining another visit at least indicates Auburn didn’t blow him away. Maybe we still have a shot.
Eh the Traore connection still worries me, sounds like we got NIL figured out but I’m still not insanely optimistic
