'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

……I’m sorry I love Tennessee Basketball but there is not a scenario in this universe where Tennessee Basketball is ever bigger than Tennessee Football. Our fanbase vastly prefers football. Even mediocre football. It’s just the truth.
It’s really sad. Basketball is 100% the more entertaining sport. I like football, I love basketball.

Why, IYO, is Spyre working for FB, but not BB? That's the big question I have. It seems as if Spyre values FB more. I'm not sure if it's a CRB problem, or a Spyre problem. I'll be interested to see what happens with Philips given you and BTO are hearing different things.

Spyre is making offers to other sports, but I get the feeling they aren’t going to break the bank for other sports. They are focused on getting football back on track. It also appears that Phillips is just looking for the highest bidder, and the UT AD isn’t looking to just outbid everyone.

The ratings and popularity say otherwise. I want Tennessee to win at everything. But basketball is my least favorite of the major sports. It’s inherently arbitrarily officiated, scoring is too common to be as exciting as it is in other sports, players fouling out is stupid, the fouling at the end of games slows it to a crawl, the NCAAT is the dumbest method in sports for choosing a champion, I could go on.

But football is better?? You don’t win your conference but still find a way in a 4 team playoff….. okay. What about the nfl - wild card teams win the super bowl - they likely aren’t the best team….. playoffs and tournaments aren’t about finding the best team. They’re all about the money. And March madness is by far the most exciting of all the post season events.

Every sport is horribly officiated. I’d rather see Tennessee score 30 points in a basketball game, then I would watch a football game that in the fourth quarter is 7-3. If players didn’t foul out then even calling fouls would almost be pointless, if a football player gets called for targeting they’re ejected, if they have two personal fouls they’re ejected. The NCAAT is by far the best sports post season.

Football officiating is just as arbitrary. Holding and pass interference calls are very random and either end or extend drives. The refs absolutely stole the Pittsburgh game from TN with the ridiculous spot and the OT goal line stop by Purdue was curious. Throw in the flopping by defenses and it gets really absurd. Golf and bowling might be the best sports as far as taking the ref’s judgement calls out of the equation.

This. There’s literally holding on every play, it just depends on if the refs throw the flag.

As far as fouling out players, I wish they’d replace that with awarding a 3rd free throw when a player is fouled by somebody with 5 or 6 fouls or more. Maybe 4 FTs awarded after 7 or 8 to prevent a Hack-a-Shaq strategy. Or start by giving players 6 fouls. The number of fouls on players alters the game too drastically. It seems like either Grant or Admiral were getting hit with 2 quick fouls in about half of their games.

I love all of the major sports. When it's football season, I'm all football. When football ends, I'm all basketball. Now, I'm all baseball. I love seeing UT win. If we had competitive chess, I'd be cheering for UT to win that too. I love UT. There's no reason Spyre shouldn't be able to make this work across all the revenue sports.

Football is the big money maker, but why can't we be good at both? Truthfully, we can be.
Yes, we can. As I said last night, it’s a simple fact that we get way more funding from sources like boosters/NIL/general donors in hoops than auburn does. It seems that we just don’t want to be involved with players who seek a bidding war, at this point.

I think people need to chill over the “recruiting” this year. We have a very solid returning core coming back. And someone posted a video earlier that Barnes is really focused on bringing in players who are up to the standards of the program and are complementary to the roster that we have. That’s exactly the approach he should take.

This kind of sensibility is sure to spark all kinds of wailing and gnashing of teeth from the usual suspects

The regular season actually matters. In basketball, you don’t just have teams that didn’t win their conference…you have teams that finished 7th or 8th in their conference playing for a national championship. That’s absurd. This is why no one cares about basketball (ratings-wise) until March. You can be the best team in America, prove it over the long haul against various styles, opponents, matchups, through good and bad shooting nights, etc., and your reward is to have to play some 7th place team in their conference who has no business in a national championship tournament, but can upset a deserving team in a flukey 1-game setting in which the inferior team has an uncharacteristic hot shooting night and/or the superior team a cold shooting night.

It’s assinine. But it’s a money maker for the NCAA, so they don’t care. It’s an entertainment event, not a valid championship format.

Look at the easy road that Kansas got this year. They had to beat Villanova. All of the other top teams were upset, clearing an easy path for them. Yes, the 4 team playoff is better because it doesn’t allow a bunch of pretenders to just play spoiler after the regular season (which matters tremendously) has shown us who the true contenders are.

Just two different opinions. Neither is wrong. I certainly understand both views.

They’re two very different sports. If you started with 64 football teams, you’d watch three weekends of blowouts to get to (something close to) the same four teams at the end. The whole idea of the NCAA basketball tournament is that anything can happen on a given day. It’s not a bait and switch. It’s been the same format for decades. As an event, it’s significantly more exciting because of the unknown. Seeding provides a material advantage, but not enough to always advance. The regular season does matter for that reason, but still allows for upsets. Sadly, the portal and NIL will cause basketball to become a lot more like football. We’ll have superpower teams that are the collection of parts from lots of small schools. As far as judging the two events as something the whole country cares about, it’s not even close. In the BCS, the two teams playing care, and some people watch even though they don’t. In the NCAA basketball tournament, people fall in love with stories. That’s a rare thing. We’ll all miss it when it’s gone.
