'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

I would think after a while, coaches are going to move on. I would think there have to be some uncommitted 2022 recruits or some top transfers in the portal that would love to play at Tennessee or Auburn. My goodness, how much money is he seeking in NIL?

You’re not going to see many people “move on” from a consensus Top 15 player in the 2022 class. Tennessee has poured a lot of time into this one, so they’re going to wait it out as long as they can. And, Auburn thinks they are the leader for him, so they’re not going anywhere either.

Hard to see him going to Auburn at this point. G-league sounds most likely.

I actually wouldn’t be shocked if this is the case now. If none of these colleges are giving him the deal he envisions, the professional route makes a lot sense. What a wild recruitment.

Being offered a spot on an Ignite team is pretty compelling. Again, he said all along that he was going to look at every option. He sure is.

Sharife Cooper was the highest paid player in the G League last year on a little over $460k a year and that was a two way contract with the Hawks. Surely UT, Auburn, and even USC are offering more than that?

Jalen Green would probably be a better comparison two years ago but he still only made about $500k for his one season.

The case they make is that it develops him faster against NBA talent and he gets to the second contract sooner. You’re right that the Spyre offer is better than Ignite money.

I’m relieved to hear that. I know there was some thinking after Jalen Green that there would be a wave of elite recruits taking that route but it just seems like a lonely road for an 18 year old. Especially now that you can make more guaranteed (and legitimate) money from a year in college.

I think you’re right. I wasn’t ready for that at 18. Sadly, parents and agents can’t get there eye off the payday of the second contract.

Feel like a lot of people made similar predictions when Brandon Jennings skipped college to play professionally in Italy for a year. He made about $4 million that year between his team salary and an Under Armour deal but few if any (the Ball family comes to mind) have followed suit. Playing in half full arenas with grown men making a living is not something many are ready for at that age.

If he is as good as advertised he would not be concerned with minutes because he is too good to keep off the floor.

Latest I’ve heard is that Auburn/Pearl were unable to match the specifics of NIL, but promised they would. He is thinking hard about G league/Ignite. I’d still say we are 1a or 1b in his top choices if he doesn’t go Ignite. He still talks to our coaches. Tang recruited him at Baylor, and is close with him and his (agent) mentor and former coaches. Tang is also one of the best recruiters in the country. That’s a sad program, but he’s landing great recruits.

Pearl is a used car salesman and will find a way if it comes down to $$$$.

Meal at Western Sizzler!

I haven’t heard of that restaurant since the 80’s. I can still see picture eating there with my mom and grandparents (God rest their souls) in Roanoke, VA as a young kid in the 70’s/80’s. My grandfather would tell me to order the (on Tuesdays) $2.99 chop steak special with fries, Texas toast, salad and soda.

My grandmother would alway tell me to eat what I wanted so I would order the sirloin tips, lol.

Great times when life was so simple and not many choices.

Sorry to digress…..

Rob Lewis on the radio today said he wouldn't rule Tennessee out, but in his opinion, it seems like Philips is almost looking for a reason not to choose Tennessee.

Have to say this again. Kids that go and play for the ignite team do not live the life that the players in the G League do. They’re well taken care of. They’re brought in and basically get the NBA life while only playing 20 games at most before they’re drafted. Now if Phillips doesn’t show well with Ignite. Then he will have to rough it with a G League team.
