'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

And some folks have been saying, “Oh it’s business as usual. Nothing to see here.” Please. This is anything but “business as usual”. We are going to see all sorts of sleaze and crazy scenarios. But it’s OK because it’s “out in the open now”. Break out the popcorn boys. This is going to be fun to watch.

It’s just more out in the open but these kinds of things have been happening for decades. It looks a little different now, but teams have made promises to play a game in players home states among other things before. Players have always gotten paid and other perks. Social media and smart phones just allow for everyone to be a reporter plus NIL allowing for more business to be openly discussed on these types of requests.

College athletics is a multi billion dollar business. Any entity worth that amount of money is never truly clean.

I'm sure I will get on board and support him and the basketvols if he does come here but the way he and "his people" have handled his recruitment has left a bad taste in my mouth. I know it may be the times we are in with NIL etc but it doesn't mean I have to like it.

I don't pay any attention to stuff like that. Especially things that are basically impossible to confirm like these supposed demands. If he comes here, he's a Vol and that's all that matters to me.

Kid seems like a diva. The longer this plays out, the more info that comes out, I'd rather go another direction. I'd rather have someone that gels with the guys we have than a headcase just looking for attention.
LOL. Welcome to the new way of doing things. I can assure you he won’t be the last one demanding special consideration.

Sure they’ve been getting paid. But it’s not close to what it was. Explain Nigel Pack and the $800,000 for two years. Or the deal that USC supposedly offered the Pitt WR. Rumored to be a couple of million and a house. No, this is an entirely new world.

I mean, Reggie Bush’s family got a house almost 20 years ago, so maybe things aren’t as far off as you think.

Didn’t USC give Reggie bush a house?

Yep. No question there were cases like that. Rumored that Zion Williamson’s parents got one too. But Nigel Pack getting that sort of money from Miami??? Neither he nor the Pitt WR are in the same stratosphere as Reggie Bush in terms of talent in their sport. I’m just saying we are going to see folks getting exorbitant deals that weren’t there before. I guess if they can get it, more power to them. And I agree they should get something. But I think this situation is ultimately going to damage college athletics if they don’t get some controls on it.

Brian Bowen received 200k before he ever stepped on a court. Javonte Smart the same and neither were as “good” as Nigel Pack or Addison. The hundreds of thousands to players that aren’t superstars have been going on. Now it’s over the table and it’s a risk that some folks are willing to take if it means their favorite team gains one more win a year.

Alabama paid 250,000 for Albert Means in the 1990s. SMU was giving players new Cadillacs, Corvettes, drugs, cash etc in the 1980s. UCLA players had to take pay cuts to play in the NBA in the 60s and 70s. Huge money has always been there.

That said, I'm not sure why kids getting more money is an issue. Why does it matter if Pack got 800,000 dollars? That's between him and the billionaire who is paying him. If his NiL is worth that much to someone, more power to him.

I used to get frustrated with these young men after hearing recruiting stories. I have a different perspective now since my twins are now 19 yr old freshmen ( son at UT and daughter Miss St).

Neither kiddo plays college sports but think about the maturity level of someone that age. I could only imagine how I would have reacted if was an elite athlete @ 17-19 yrs old (1988-1989). This is a life changing event for the young man and I’m confident he has people in his ear with varying opinions. Plus add in social media and everyone has a comment or opinion. I know I do.

I hope he is a Vol as I breathe & love Vol sports. I try to keep a better perspective nowadays but still get too emotional in wins and losses.

Go Vols!

How is that an Auburn Reference?

Apparently there is a video of a former Auburn player singing "about that time" before a game or something. I saw it on twitter and Auburn fans are spamming his social media with it. Don't know if it's actually a reference he is intending to make or not.
