'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

Pearl is a salesman and knows how to push buttons in recruiting, I have no doubt he’s negatively recruiting Tennessee (his time here, BHH flopping etc) and pushing the right buttons with Jabari Smith and Auburn.

So he’s negatively recruiting against his time here at Tennessee due to his own mistakes? Lol

Has there ever been an instance of a live on-camera commitment to the G-League lol? That’s the only thing keeping me from thinking he might go pro. Like, I don’t think I have ever seen one? Usually these live commitments mean college, and you read in an article or tweet that Player X is going pro.

I’m just trying to imagine watching this live and seeing Julian toss on a G-League hat 😂

I agree and it would be even more odd to do it on CBS when they have no affiliation with the NBA

I've not seen this brought up, and I'm 100% not saying it won't happen because every kid wants a moment in the spotlight, but it would be really, really, weird to get on cbs and announce you're going to the g-league. Like, there's no fan base to ignite, there's no one on the other end celebrating, there's no Twitter explosion, etc. Would seem like an odd choice unless he really doesn't know and is just gonna pick one last second

I’m not saying he’s definitely using that tactic, just saying I would about guarantee he’s negatively recruiting against Tennessee and that that could be one potential angle.

Pearl is the last person who should be trying to negatively recruit against someone.

Him and Steven Pearl are not exactly saints themselves.

That’s what I am thinking, too. I have no evidence, but based on piecing together all of the scarce info and the “indecision” from Phillips just 3.5 hours from his commitment, I wonder if he is weighing whether the college life (I.e. classes) is for him.

If we are to believe from the info available that Tennessee is paying the most by a good portion, Auburn’s NIL is a promise and not on paper, his parents like the stability of TN and Barnes, and we’ve got the longest running relationship with his side, the conflict would IMO seem odd to me if it was a decision between AU and TN.

All of this leads me to believe that IF he is conflicted and this isn’t just smoke to hide his decision, then he must not be sure if he wants to deal with the student side of college instead of just purely basketball 24/7.
I can understand that for a football recruit but for a kid who seems to have his eyes set on being a one and done I don’t get it. You pretty much only need to pass the fall semester and you can completely sleepwalk through that first year of classes anyhow

anything new?

The latest intel on 5-star Julian Phillips
When you keep your circle close, it is hard for information to leak out. 2022 On3 Consensus No. 13 Julian Phillips has kept information close to the chest. There is very little information out about his commitment (today at 3 PM EST), and most of that information is speculation.
The 6-foot-8 small forward took early official visits to Southern Cal, Tenessee, and LSU. He committed to LSU, where he remained committed for the duration of the season. When they fired head coach Will Wade, Phillips re-opened his recruitment.
Since his de-committed from the Tigers, Phillips has taken an unofficial visit to South Carolina and an official visit to Auburn. Phillips took a last-second meeting with the G-League the day before his commitment, again keeping most people on their toes.
Phillips’ final seven are Auburn, Tennessee, G-League, South Carolina, Southern Cal, Florida State, and Overtime Elite. Sources close to the situation suggest the first three will be the main focus.
Two weeks ago, Auburn was the clear choice, he came off his official visit there, and a conversation we had was ‘done deal.’ Since it appears things have shifted, Tennessee has strengthened its stance and taken back the lead.
Phillips has not talked to any of the staffs on his list yet. However, with the intel I have received from all around the situation, Tennessee would be my pick as I press ‘publish’ on this writing.

I realize this is a debate of opinion, but don’t know how much trust is required when one coach has a sack of money for you and another follows the rules and doesn’t offer illegal benefits especially if the recruit isn’t particularly well off. Sort of like Monty Hall on Let’s Make a Deal. You want the cash shown or the potential better development behind curtain number 1?
I was just saying that it’s more likely he was choosing between more than one coach with a bag of money. There was never a shortage of them.

Is he an Auburn writer for ON3? Kind of like Rivals and 247 have fan-specific sites? Haven't learned much about ON3's business model to know as he appears to be speaking/writing from an Auburn standpoint.
