I was in the Self Checkout lane and I'm already in the car.
First I would call out the clerk and ask him why they were ringing up more than the allotted number of items and if I didnt get some explanation from the clerks and an appologitc gesture from the selfish person in front of me I would walk out of the store leaving my items sitting in the check out aisle. Probably would've pushed past the person in front of me on the way as well while loudly excusing myself. I follow a principle of instant justice knowing that slights such as this will never be rectified and that I'd rather take some immediate satisfaction while I can than to have it gnaw at me long after the opportunity to do or say anything to the offenders is gone.
How would that get you thrown in jail? We don't have laws against changing your mind at the checkout where I come from. Any given day I could be carrying ; ).other than getting thrown in jail in hurry, would it actually bother you to wait in line a few minutes more ? or move to another line ? and don't forget that the person in front of you with them 25 items, may actually be toting a pistol in the state of Tn ? legally or not
Commotion heck yes. Crime no. By the way any bump would just be the accidental by product of squeezing through the line to get to the exit which falls on the store. As to your question it really depends on how badly i need what's in my cart. If it's not an urgent purchase and I'm in a state of mind where a situation such as the op described actually bothers me then I'm going to speak up then and there and take my business elsewhere if I'm not satisfied with the response. I'm self aware enough to realize that these things can eat at me after the fact and it's unhealthy to carry that around. For my own spiritual, mental and physical well being I have to respond to life's little irritations in a way that elicits some modicum of regret on the part of the irritant coupled with the belief that maybe the behavior will not be repeated. It's called courtesy. If you practice it towards me I'll respond in kind. If you can't be courteous and follow basic social conventions then you are outside my society and you'd better hope your dog can eat mine if you get in my way.your going to call out clerks and managers and bump into the person checking there stuff out and don't expect a commotion ? instead of getting in another line ?![]()
It's times like these are one of the very few times it pays to be an old guy...if I get called on something like this I just act confused and start talking about something random, like pie...

I care less about someone with too many items going through the express checkout than I do about people that have a cart full going through self checkout.
If you have fewer thsn 10 items you should go to self check out amyway.
I think the best coarse of action for the OP would have been to randomly remove items from the ladies cart until she had only the legal number of items left. It would have been awesome if some were cans and you actually rolled them in random directions, causing other patrons to jump out of the way. Then, while she stared at you in awe and wonderment, take a sharpy and write the number 15 on her hand, drop the pen and walk away.
Sometimes I think I could spend an entertaining afternoon sitting in a lawn chair and watching people have nervous breakdowns in the self checkout line.
