3 Former Vols chosen as worst picks since 1994

He actually played enough to not be a total bust and was a good DT for awhile.

Nash, Goodrich and Shuler were draft busts of epic proportions.

Shuler was a product of greed. He intentionally kept himself out of the Redskins summer and fall workouts and showed up 2 weeks or so before the season began. The fans in Washington basically didn't like him (b/c of his contact dispute and resultant delay in getting with the team) from the start. When he finally did play, he suffered from a lack of practice and the fans went ape-s..t. For the first time in his life, he was booed resoundingly. He couldn't get that out of his head and his performance suffered. This coupled with the fact that he was a John Elwayish type QB forced to be a Troy Aikman type player only compounded the problem.

I was living in DC when the skins drafted Shuler. His moronic agent, Tom Condon, had him hold out of training camp for almost a month I think. When he finally came in the city already hated him as a classic greedy athlete. He had no chance of being a success. When he had trouble grasping the differences in the pro game he was toast. I was also at his last game as a redskin. Gus Ferrot was starting and got hurt for one play so Shuler came in. They called a reverse, which Shuler promptly screwed up and the exchange was fumbled. I have never heard any stadium boo one of their own players so loudly. Such a great college player, and such a shame.

according to them Manning was 4th. it went

1. Ray Lewis
2. Tom Brady
3. Derrick Brooks
4. Peyton Manning

Derrick Brooks!? Ray Lewis #1!? IMO no linebacker short of Lawrence Taylor should ever be put ahead of a QB....and even then it would be tough to put him ahead of Brady and Peyton.

I would agree with everyone except Shuler. I hate to say it, but the kid kind of got a raw deal being thrown right into the mix as a starter from day 1 with a sucky team. Then the fans turned on him and booed him everytime he had the ball. I can think of a lot of good QB's that would crack under that pressure as well if they were put in those circumstances. Heath seemed to be a kid who needed to learn the system and be brought into it instead of thrown into the fire day one....

A part of that is the large number of Vols that got drafted. When you have a good reputation for producing nfl talent a lot more players get picked. When a lot more players get picked there's a higher chance of a bust or three.

You "get it".

Shuler would have been a success almost anywhere else. His demise was the result of Norv Turner mistakes.

I was reading the latest copy of ESPN the magazine earlier when I came across a page that listed the worst draft pick that each of the 32 NFL teams had selected since 1994 and 3 Vols made the list....

Broncos- Marcus Nash
Cowboys- Dwayne Goodrich
Redskins- Heath Shuler

sorry if already posted, just thought it was interesting....

seems like the 90's era Vols had some troubles in the league. luckily, for the perception of the program, we have had pretty good success as of late..

Unfortunately i agree, especially Nash. I think i read somewhere he had more career fumbles than receptions. But as a Vol he had a really good career. Him and Peyton were lethal. If Heath could have kept his feet healthy I think he would have had a longer and more productive career. As big of a Shuler fan as I was and always have been I never understood the Redskins taking him that high. I actually had the redskins as my 2nd fave team behind Denver when they drafted him and when the Bronco's got Nash I was siked.

Kerry Collins and Heath were both considered busts early in their careers. Heath had a catastrophic foot injury. Collins went on to win a super bowl.

Fate has funny twists some times.

Collins never won a Super Bowl. His Giants team lost to the Ravens in the Super Bowl. His Panthers team lost to the Packers in the NFC title game. That was as close as he got. He had a career 73.8 rating in the NFL. He was lucky to have that long of a career with that rating.

Got off to a bad start of his own making. Fans booed him cause he held out. Gus Frerotte stepped in and Shuler was never heard from again.

His biggest problem was his foot injury and that did him in. But he also had Cam Cameron as his QB Coach and didnt have any help at WR or RB. His best WR was Desmond Howard and that wasnt saying much. He also held out on contract negotions which didnt make him the most popular newbie. If he could have gotten behind a Veteran and learned and got broken in slowly it definitely would have helped him.

And he probably "made" more money in congress than in either the NFL or in real estate. #crookedpoliticians

He got paid in Washington and got the biggest contract in Redskin History at that time. He got a 5 million dollar bonus plus 2+ a yr.

Does Bust money spend the same as regular? I'm sure Shular and Nash are devastated to be on that list. Deeeeee Wayne Goodrich on the other hand........

Couldnt have said it better. Heath is one of my all time fave Vols but greed is the root of all evils. It was definitely his doing and if it was his agent giving him advice he should ha e fired him but regardless he was his own man and could have made his own decision. But he still got his 5 mill signing bonus and 2+ mill a yr so he definitely wasnt hurting.

Honestly it was Heath that brought on the fans turning on him by holding out and not going through workouts and practices. When he signed the largest contract in Redskins history he was expected to perform immediately. So it was majority Heaths fault unfortunately. If he would have signed the contract and not held out and gone out and earned the respect of his Coach's, teammates and fans it would have gone alot differently. Sure he was getting bad advice but ultimately it was his call and decision.

As a Titans fan, Pacman and VY has to be 1 and 2 in this poll.

Chris Henry, Travis LaBoy, Ben Troupe, Antwan Odom, Andre Woolfolk, Tyrone Calico, Tank Williams, Andre Dyson and Joey Kent say hello.

In 2003, the Titans selected Woolfolk in the 1st round and Calico in the 2nd round. In 2004, they selected Ben Troupe, Travis LaBoy and Antwan Odom in the 2nd (they had no 1st round pick or they would've screwed that up too). I don't know if you could screw up 2 drafts in a row with your first picks any worse than that.

I've often wanted to talk to Heath Shuler just to disprove my impression that he's dumb as a box of rocks. I know a guy as successful as he is has to have some level of intelligence, but for some reason I've just always perceived him as not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I sat by Heath in my Econ 201 class. I honestly didn't pay too much attention to others in the class and didn't know who he was until 2 weeks in. He was always super nice and made good grades, seemed smart to me anyways.
