That image is amazing.

That argument doesn't work.

Why not? You don't want Butch to sign any 3 stars, yet Cam Sutton, a freshman all-American last year and arguably our best defensive player was a Concensus 3 star. The argument works quite nicely.

Name another one? Seems like people use the Cam Sutton example way too much.

Jashon Robertson, Coleman Thomas, Ethan Wolf, Corey Vereen, and Brian Randolph were all composite 3* and are playing good/great for us.

Agreed. I was just sick of hearing the same example. Justin Worley was a three star also.

Well if we want to only talk CBJ recruits, there is only one real class to go off of. Out of this list I'd say many will make big impacts and all are rivals three stars:

Elliott Berry
Gavin Bryant
Neiko Creamer
Jakob Johnson
Emmanuel Mosley
Jashon Robertson
Coleman Thomas
Owen Williams
Ethan Wolf

Sidenote: Putting this list together just reminded me how worthless these recruiting services can be if you use them on a player by player basis.

I do agree with your response that they'll make an impact, but predicting the future is semi pointless right now. Perfect for message board discussion.

Well 4 already are. Two true freshmen starting OL, one DT making plays in the two deep, and what looks like a future superstar TE.

I was just using CBJ recruits though. If we want to talk current team, you can add Josh Smith, Justin Worley, Corey Vereen, Brian Randolph, Trevarris Saulsberry, and Jordan Williams. I might be missing a couple.

Kyler Kerbyson is another you can add. Mack Crowder isn't too bad either. The point of all these names is to say that the talent level is in the eye of the coach. The coach's ability to evaluate with his eyes will determine how good a team is. The nimwits at rivals are sportswriters who know about football as much as we are.

Exactly. Another thing to keep in mind is that those three stars that are big contributors for us were all Dooley picks. The list of potential impact 3 stars from Butch's first class is longer than the list of all of Dooley's impact 3 stars. Also CBJ has consistently found guys like Weatherd who were rated low when we offered then blew up. So far I'm very confident in this staff's eye for talent.

Dooley was a decent evaluator of talent. His downfall was on the field. CBJ can coach as well as evaluate. Everybody rerating and going after guys CBJ takes shows his ability to evaluate players.

when you add in the fact CBJ offered some of these guys when they were 3*'s, then they balled out and were evaluated again and then ranked as a 4*,it makes the whole argument invalid... just look at Dormady as a prime example...the guy that started this thread was raising hell, concerned, and losing sleep over CBJ signing a 2* QB... HE HAD NOT EVEN BEEN EVALUATED...

Nothing has changed. It is very likely that Jones' effectiveness in finding underrated guys will be just as important to the future as his ability to land the highly rated guys.

Eventually though... the recruiting svcs will start deferring to his opinion like they do Saban, Miles, et al. They aren't fools. They know that some coaches know how to pick guys with real potential and some don't.

I know they do. I just truly believe UT is better then everyone and truly the most special place in College football. Why can't we do something no one else can?

Because sometimes you have to make your own evaluations and fill your needs from those evaluations. Dooley didn't recruit nearly good enough in ranking BUT that was also magnified by us not filling our needs as well. You probably could land almost all four star recruits if you just ignored positional needs and went entirely by the recruiting service rankings.

Evaluations are really only as good as those doing the evaluations. Let's take Ryan Newsome for example. Is he a three star player when he has offers from almost every major school in the nation. I mean are we going to trust Rivals evaluators or the coaches that get paid millions to evaluate players for their systems?

Not sure why that's necessary. Using Cam as the example is the best and easiest way to blow Nationdom's stupid "point" out of the water, but, ok. Ethan Wolf, our true freshman starting TE, was a 3 star on Rivals. There are also many others.

Not Vols, but a couple of names that come to mind immediately are Johnny Manziel, Patrick Willis, and Randall Cobb.
