These awards usually seem lazily decided. Dumb sh*t counts, like they were never going to give 2 first team spots to the LVs. So Rae gets second team even if she deserved first. They almost always give POY based on scoring average so Re never had a chance bc she was so unselfish about Rae's touches.
I believe Boston was better overall this season than Key, but Key is closing in on her and probably has more potential upside. If Key becomes consistent plus develops any hops whatsoever she'll be phenomenal. Let it Be.
Kinda surprised the players are being so openly scornful, just hope they turn it into good motivation.
Usually, due to voter laziness, you have to work to get them to give COY to anyone EXCEPT whoever won the title. And that's even when that coach was expected to win it and not totally retooling as Blair was. Throw in the sentimental angle that he's 75 and I think anyone would agree Blair not winning COY is very unusual.
If it was Identity politics, I certainly understand the good intent. But in a case this obvious, I wonder if it's a little embarrassing for the coach given the award. Sure don't want to insult anyone with tokenism. It's such a hard social tight rope trying to figure out when special considerations for minorities go from beneficial to harmful. Of course we want to err on the side of lifting everyone up but that requires more thought and patience than we're usually willing to give.
I don't see how any coach of any description has to work twice as hard as another to win it though. Could be argued its harder for some to get the job, but once someone is head coach it all seems pretty equal. In fact, you could see Gary Blair being at a big ole recruiting disadvantage to a younger woman of color.
