#4 seed or Sugar Bowl

Here's how this plays out= Texas beats TCU this weekend. Michigan knocks off Ohio St. LSU knocks off Georgia in SEC title game Oregon loses to the first school that has a decent team. This moves the Vols up to #1 and we run the table. Bank on it.
You really think LSU could beat Georgia? Stranger things have happened but I don’t see it

If this has been ask please merge.

What would you want more? Vols being a #4 seed playing #1 seed and prob being picked to lose OR a Sugar Bowl berth and a good chance of winning?

i would never pick a consolation match instead of a championship bracket. not a good question.

vols will be a #3 seed vs. the big 10 winner - book it.
rematch w/ uga (most likely) for the natty. enjoy the season.

Is this real life? Are you serious? Surely not....

The primary goal at the beginning of the season is to make that final four.

Once you get there, it is just a standard, four team, singer elimination backet. What happened earlier in the season makes no difference. Last man standing....just like a Royal Rumble.

Are you saying that a non playoff game is more important than a playoff game?

As long as UT wins out from here... this is all house money to me. I thought UT would win 9 and was considered on the optimistic side of things. I think the consensus here was 8 regular season wins with more than a few predicting less. Those predicting 10 wins much less more or a playoff berth... or even a NYD 6 bowl were pretty roundly ridiculed.

So to finish the season with an 11-1 record with the sole loss coming to the likely NC who made UT their "game of the year".... I'm good. Give me the Sugar Bowl or a playoff berth. That would be an incredible season all things considered and a tremendous proof that UT has found the coach who will turn the program around.

I will now switch hats and exhort everyone to show some patience during the next couple of years. UT will lose talent but more importantly experience this year. Recruiting momentum is picking up but the '22 and '23 classes are going to be somewhat middling in comparison to the rest of the SEC. I trust Huepel to find those diamonds in the rough... but it takes time to develop those guys. We could be looking at a year or two when UT isn't winning quite at this level.

After having a taste of success... we're going to have to show some patience.

If LSU beats UGA then they both go to the playoff. UT does not. The champion is getting in... plus a 1 loss UGA team regardless of anything else that happens.

Well we have a better record than LSU and we also beat them on the road almost like Georgia beat us at home.

Making to the playoffs unprepared (ie. roster depth, mental disadvantages) is a disaster. Just ask Cincinnati.

#5 rank - Sugar Bowl win - 12-1 record - stellar rebuilding/rebranding year. COY award.

I do not think the committee will leave the SEC champion out as long as they have 2 or fewer losses. If LSU beat UGA then that would become the most impressive win anyone has had this year. I don't think there's a scenario at this point where UT would jump a one loss UGA team.

From there, you get the Big 10 champion and a choice between a number of one loss teams. The bias will be against putting 3 SEC teams in. If TCU is undefeated then they're in as well.

Did you really just compare UT this year to Cincinnati?

UT lost to UGA in Athens in a game where UT did not play well and UGA played by far their best game of the year. I think you could make the argument that winning a NYD 6 bowl would be more beneficial than losing a first round playoff game... but "unprepared"? Don't think you can make that case in the context of every other team UT will be compared to for that 3rd or 4th spot.
