I read in usa today that in some form or fashion KY,MN,Mo,SC,SD,VT,and WI are considering lowering their drinking age some for everyone some just for military personnel what do y'all think about this?I believe they should lower it for military personnel
I might be a little biased considering that I was in the Navy from 18-21 but I figure if they can send you so far from home to possibly die you should be considered mature enough to have a legal drink.

I've always thought if you are old enough to put your life on the line you should be able to drink.

my understanding is that for any state to do this they will lose federal highway funding.

It said congress passed a law in 84 that states that did not raise their age limits would lose 10% of their federal highway funds.

It is about time that people are using common sense regarding alcohol. Also, as a state legislature, I would gladly give up the 10% in Federal Highway funding for the tax revenue gained.

I don't like the idea at all. 21 year olds can't make a mature decision to not drink and drive, so what makes 18 year olds more adept to make that decision?? If 18 year old soldiers want to drink I don't have a problem with that, outside of military bases I have a HUGE problem with it.

Then maybe we should raise the drinking age to 22. If 21 year olds aren't mature enough, then a 22 year old must be ready. Or better yet, lets just raise it to 23... or 25. Or how about 30 years old?

Drinking and driving is a largely overblown "problem." MADD has even resorted to exaggerating drunk driving fatality statistics by now highlighting "alcohol related deaths" instead of deaths caused by an intoxicated driver who is at fault in the accident.

If there is one person in a car involved in an accident who has above a .01 BAC, MADD considers the accident "alcohol related."

Is everyone aware that the founder of MADD is now one of its most outspoken critics?

When I turned 21 they lowered the drinking age to 18 for a couple of years so I'm bitter on this subject...

Back in MO there has been a pretty large movement for this for awhile now. Mostly ran by high school and College students predictably. I've said that if it were ever to come to a vote I would vote against it and I'm 19. I just don't see too many benefits. As for the military aspect, I haven't really thought about it.

If an 18 yr old can vote and serve they should be able to drink. And just b/c they can doesn't mean they will.

The drinking age should definately be lowered to 18, military or not.

Gotta love that Gov. Winfield Dunn!

I was right on the edge. When I was 18 it moved to 19 briefly but I was grandfathered in. Then when I was 19 or 20 it moved to 21 but still grandfathered in.

When it was 18, any highschool kid with a crappy mustache could get beer or liquor if you didn't mind trying a few places.

Go ask the parents who lose their kids to alcohol related incidents every year. The kids drink and then drive at 17 and 18 years old and get killed. I'm not even talking about MADD or SADD or any of the ADD groups out there, so why are they even mentioned in response to my reply. I am talking about kids making a MATURE decision. Being 18 and being in high school or a freshman in college is hardly the age to let immature kids start drinking. Do I believe this would go for all the 18 year olds out there?? No obviously not. I would say only about 25% would be responsible enough to do the right thing, where as it would increase to around 50% at 21. Why do 18 year old's need to drink legally anyways?? Is that Algebra test really that stressful??

Kids throughout history have grown up drinking alcohol and have handled it just fine. Kids in Europe still do. Kids in the US did, prior to the temperance movement.

If kids in the US cannot handle alcohol anymore, then that is a reflection of the homes and society they grow up in. I drank wine at holiday meals from the time I was about 12. I, could be a little biased, think I have turned out just fine.

That sums up a lot of things..............

I worry this might diminish American ingenuity in some small way. The first 15-20 minutes of any night I went out in high school revolved around figuring out how to get the booze. Other than that I guess I could not care less.
