8/19 scrimmage?

Looking back over my notes I only see 3 maybe 4 drops. Still 3-4 too many but a big improvement.

What has happened to Brett Smith?

Slick Shelley caught my eye a few times. He looks skinny but he did catch one ball from Hardegree for about 11 yards.

3 or 4 isn't bad at all. Even the best teams in the country have that many drops.

Right now I'd have to say I'm more worried about the offensive line over anything else. However I also understand that it takes a little time for the O-line to come together.

All in all, this seemed like a very positive scrimmage with 2 weeks to go. The main question is, can they keep building on it?

Let's look at who had the drops (by my definition):
Briscoe
Holbert (great play by the db to knock it out but could have had it)
Rogers
Asumnu

Another player to keep an eye on is Brad Cottam. He had a really nice 35 yard catch where he went up over the DB to bring it down. If he can prove he has good hands, his height could really be an advantage down the field.

Our O-line might be better than they appear in the scrimmages solely because our defensive front 7 is that good.

I think our front 7 is solid but I'm afraid our line is not playing very well yet.

He caught one from Crompton for about 8 yards.

The ut stats only list the top WR's. There are a few that caught 1 that aren't listed. You can tell this for sure by adding up all of the passing yards and comparing that to the receiving yards. They must have left off all the guys with just one catch.

I just don't understand how we go from a top flight O/L producing school to a O/L that seems out of sorts.I don't get it.If the O/L turns out to be the weak link to this team, we are in big trouble!

Very glad and relieved that Ainge played well and Crompton continued to play well.

I watched the highlights. I don't know who the db was on that long pass by Hardegree but he wouldn't have gotten away with that pass against a 1st team d in the SEC. The WR had to break the route off and go back into the middle to catch it. Wouldn't have been possible if the db had been on him... but then again, hopefully Taylor's just that fast.

My optimism has definitely risen.

As for the o-line, it is usually one of the last groups to solidify.

Also, if Chavis is comparing this front 7 with last year's front 7 then should we really be that concerned since they do seem to be improving?

Looked like they had a couple of decent screens/swings to the backs. Good sign.

how many sacks did 1st team defense rack up? and were any of those against the 1st team offense?

i dont understand why we are breaking down on the blitz. is the offensive line not shifting to the blitz? slow decision by the qb? or maybe the backs are filling the holes ....i sure hope we are getting our assignments.

penalties seems better than last year. special teams making plays on both sides of the ball is good to hear.

who see,s to be the emtional leader on the defense?

I think probably half the sacks were the first team defense against the first team offense. That's around 4 by my count.

I recall more of them being from the blitz and few being from the QB holding the ball too long.

That's actually encouraging to me. We've gone from throwing it up for grabs to eating it and taking the sack. Still not good, but at least it shows some level of progression.

I just found something to be concerned about in all this good news.

Aren't the Vols getting a pass rush with just the down 4? It seems that the sacks went to LB's and DB's.

They need an effective rush with 4 against Cal.

I sort of get what you are saying, but come on man . . . We sack the QB repeatedly and you're complaining about who got the sacks. :ermm:

I think the O-line will continue to come together. I liked the fact that Fulmer was working with them personally last week - and I hope he continues to. Seems like that is one of our weaker links at this point, but again, one in an area where I'm confident we can improve.

I really like the fact that Ainge showed mental improvement. Really really like that.
