9 Americans Dead after Mexican cartel attack

I am always hesitant to put US soldiers, sailors, and airmen at risk...note my stances in the sandbox. This comes I guess primarily from being raised in a very military family. That said, this isnt a case IMO where drone strikes would finish the task, and tomahawks etc would kill too many civilians. I would like to see a division or so of Marines committed to the task complete with longbow Apaches and Abrams main battle tanks. Also drones and special forces units where needed.
In areas such as Juarez where the cartels have strongholds and many hundreds of wannabe soldiers...I suggest the Israeli method. Drop fliers for 48 to 72 hours in advance telling everyone that if they are not part of or loyal to the cartels then they need to leave town immediately. Then when time is up, kill every living thing and destroy every standing structure and vehicle occupied by enemy combatants and sympathizers. Absolutely no mercy or quarter given. These cartels have all US and some Soviet weapons which I have seen....50 cal anti aircraft and 50 cal BMG sniper rifles, grenades and launchers...they have shown no mercy. We should show less.

This should only need to be done once or twice. Will it solve their drug problems or get rid of all the cartels??? No. Surely not.

Will it put an end to any mistreatment of US citizens knowing that the price is surely death? Yes. Yes it will. Just like the terrorists and arabs in the ME..all these people understand is death. All they respect is death. We should give it to them in abundance. They will recognize it immediately...and fear the US military as they should.

Mexico's problem...is Mexico's problem, Marcus. Secure the border. And then defend it. It won't happen...we're both dreaming here...but you secure the border, and put overwhelming firepower at hand to deal with those who simply do not understand that we will no longer put up with the BS and troubles coming across that border. Let the USBP handle the squirters, and let the military handle the shooters. I have a GED, and I could secure the southern border in 30 days if I had carte blanche.

Any American citizen that chooses to visit or live in Mexico does so with the understanding that once you cross that border, you are on your own. Same as it is with North Korea, China, Russia, Iran, and others. Come out from under the umbrella, and you just might get rained on. Go at your own peril.

Mexico is a Third World Nation, and is not likely to change in our lifetime. Fact is, look around Central and South America right now, and there are several boiling pots. Venezuela and Chile to name a couple. We are not the world's policeman, or protector, or pot of gold. Personally, I can't see giving any foreign aid at all while we still have hungry children inside our own borders. But there's more than enough money in our coffers to feed them kids; house the unfortunate; offer a helping hand to those who need it; and still help out our allies. The swamp, unfortunately, will never get drained.

Mexico is corrupt from the President to the Police, and everywhere in between. Secure the border, and let them sort it out. If they don't, we'll have far less problems to deal with once they cull their own herd.

Mine field. I think 500 yards ought to do it.

Yes. It sucks that people want to do hard drugs but the war on drugs has made the problem worse. Bring it above board and there are all kinds of benefits:

you can tax it
you can regulate it and make it safer
you don't have to spend $50B+ policing it
you can spend some of those savings on solving addiction problems
drug addicts will see better outcomes when they aren't treated like criminals
black market mostly disappears
violence associated with drug use mostly disappears
foreign cartels and many domestic organizations lose largest source of $
Fewer people in prison.

Yeah let's invade more countries, I can't see a downside.
We go half way around the world to fight terrorism but ignore the drug cartels in our own backyard. It seems pretty stupid to me. You don't have to invade Mexico to do more than what we're doing now.

Like what, for instance?

Joint task force with the Mexican government maybe. Let them provide the ground troops. We provide tactical and air support. Cartels do represent a threat to American interests and are deserving of being neutralized. IMO, they currently present more of a threat than who we're fighting overseas.

The Mexican President has declined such assistance from us, the last I looked.

Mexico isnt considered a third world country

It meets all of my criteria.
A first world country is fully developed, a second world country is still developing and a third world country has barely begun to develop. Mexico is considered a developing country, therefore it would be classified as second world. Then again I don't know what your criteria are but this would be the official criteria most subscribe to.

Violence still continues because addicts will still rob and kill to supply their habit. And gangs will still control black market drugs. Not to mention the effect of thousands more dying from addiction

Nothing will ever make all the violence associated with drug use completely go away, but most of the violence is related to the black market so legalization would make a world of difference.

Treating drug addicts like criminals and pariahs is part of the problem, too.

Most drug addicts are criminals though

Maybe you should try to get off drugs and save lives.

I'm a firm believer in letting stupid people pay the consequences for being stupid.
The problem is the government feels the need to rescue them. And then when a heroine addicted women gives her body for more drugs and she has 5 drug addicted babies the government feels the need to rescue them. The stupid never pay the stupid price, the American taxpayers do.

Well 100% of drug addicts break the law but even then most steal or put others at risk

Link?

You'd probably be shocked at how many people you know who abuse drugs (and alcohol is a drug, but even leaving that out of the equation). Usually, you only find out people are drug addicts because they get caught breaking the law. So you don't know about all the ones who didn't get caught. Drug addicts can be high functioning members of society as long as their secret doesn't get out

Actually I have enough training to easily spot when people are addicted to drugs. I teach classes on it as well. I agree that more drug addiction help in the form of addiction services is needed. But drug use is a choice and it’s not good for anyone to use them
