Outside of government agencies, are they not able to do so?

Yes, I think there are some states that have protections against firing an addict that seeks treatment. What I wouldn't want with legalization is protections for users getting passed.

Agreed. Though it must be said that some of these groups will quite possibly turn to increased kidnapping and human trafficking.

Legalize prostitution, too. That'd really put a dent in trafficking.

Either way, I'm not sure you're going to see more kidnapping and human trafficking. For the cartels, the drug $ enables everything else because they have unlimited funds for buying off the right people. The network already exists so then they tack on kidnapping and human trafficking.

Does it oppose the constitution?
We have foreign governments influencing countries in this hemisphere, which negatively impacts US security and the economy.
Pretty sure the US gave these guys the guns. Maybe not these guns but one of the typical cia arms deals that comes back to haunt us

Trump tweeting about this and suggesting that the militaries of the US and Mexico join together to wage war on the cartels...alrighty then.

This thread has went way off topic
Horrible thing to happen especially to kids. But what is America supposed to do? Pour more money into a failed drug war? Police Northen Mexico when we can't even police Chicago?

The answer, imo, isn't in new action. The answer is in repealing old action.
1. Allow consenting adults to practice their religion how they see fit especially when it means entering into marriages which are unusual.
2. Decriminalize and legalize drugs use.
3. Decriminalize and legalize drug plant growth in the US.

Don’t mind lending them intelligence and logistics support but no combat troops. They would be in a no win situation.

Where did I say America was supposed to do anything? I hate what happened to those folks and feel terrible about it, my message and point is make sure we keep them on their side of the border. At the end of the day that's what I care the most about.

I'm a firm believer in letting stupid people pay the consequences for being stupid.
That means no narcan for the stupids, I'm also a believer in natural selection. I don't think the general public is aware of what their tax dollars through Medicaid is paying for.... The stupids. For long hospitalizations, drug treatment for their 4th time and for them to get on government subsidized soboxone. Which will eventually kill most who use it. 👀

I quoted you because the thread got off track. And, for once, I was trying to re track a thread. My questions were rhetorical and directed generally.

Criminals exist on both sides of the border, though.

Oh got it, I apologize.

Sure they do, but we don't need more coming in.

My take on this isn't going to be pretty:

From what I gather they are a group of Mormons who left and went to Mexico many years ago to escape the polygamy laws here and became duel-citizens. Why are we up in arms about this? The deaths are tragic but you have to be responsible for your own safety and living in Mexico where cartel violence is very real isn't the smart thing to do. I also say this for aid workers who go into other 3rd world countries and are taken hostage.

Agreed.

I don't know if this specific group is one, but some of these "offshoot groups" (call it what it is, Mormon Fundamentalists) are rampant with underage abuse and subjugation of women. Not saying anyone deserves to die, but the reason they are in Mexico isn't necessarily to spread the good word, provide aid, or escape religious persecution. Maybe these were good people, I don't know. "Mormon offshoot" generally sparks negative connotations though.

Trump disagrees:

If Mexico needs or requests help in cleaning out these.....monsters, the United States stands ready, willing & able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great new President of Mexico has made this a big issue, but the cartels have become so large and powerful that you sometimes need an army to defeat an army!

Interesting reporting going on here.

Foxnews reports the group as:

faith-based community of U.S. citizens...an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

CNN reports the group as:

members of a Mormon community...members of a fundamentalist sect that is separate from the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...

Fox plays up the "faith-based" part and doesn't mention polygamy or the word "Mormon" once. Trump calls them "wonderful people from Utah". There would be no reason not to assume this is a regular nuclear LDS family with a vacation home in Mexico.

CNN just calls the group what it is with no negative or positive connotation.

I perceive no positive or negative connotation from either blurb.
