A "come to Jesus" moment

behind close doors I would argue almost all coaches competing against the two schools mentioned above realize they have virtually no shot for a recruit if VU and UVA are recruiting them unless the recruit is a legacy or hometown hero. Publicly they all take the high road as they should and say the "politically correct" verbiage and the NCAA will never change the system anytime soon IMO.

Here is a thought to ponder, if 5 years ago CDS was hired by Vanderbilt and Corbin was hired by Tennessee. Has anything changed? Possibly if any and not by much if at all......

I still place more fault with the administration than any one coach or player. Just my $.02

Very good post.

I think Corbin is a dang good coach and would be successful whenever he went but not like this. I think he make tenn a 6-10 range program in the sec

I know I'm not going to be popular with this but...I'd like to see Serrano get 2 more years. When you consider exactly how tough the SEC is in baseball, I'm not sure we can get anyone that can do any better short of getting a guy like Corbin away from Vandy. There are a couple of things that I absolutely love about Dave Serrano. 1) The guy WANTS to be at Tennessee. 2) He absolutely does things the right way and is a great individual to represent the university. The baseball community recognizes the guy as an outstanding coach even if that hasn't translated to wins on the field. To me, those things are extremely important and I still believe the guy can make this team competitive on a long term basis. Given the high level of competition, maybe a little bit more patience and stability is all the program needs. Maybe that is just wishful thinking but so be it. With baseball not being a revenue positive sport, maybe we should be just a little more patient than we could with a football coach. If any coach could ever earn a little more time with all those things other than wins-losses, this might just be the guy that should get that opportunity in spite of the record. I absolutely hate to see those kids lose and if I didn't think that turnaround could come with Dave Serrano, I would want to make a move for a new coach right away but I'm just not sure that we won't be having this same conversation four years down the road if we have a new coach next season.

Interesting thoughts from the past.

I thought the Serrano hire was a good one. Having said that, he has probably been here a year and a half to long. Not that is the same for every situation but as I look back on his tenure, his best team was the one he inherited. The down fall of that team was when he had to dismiss a pitcher for violating team rules. A lot of people want to give coaches more time even when the writing is on the wall, is Tennessee a better situation than it was two years ago?

Time will not help.

Baseball needs 20 -24 full scholarhips. I am not blaming the lack of scholarships on UT's success, but it is the right thing to do for the players. It is expensive for an out of state player at UT. A great baseball scholarship is 50%, most are closer to 33%. It does adjust to whether it is in-state or out of state. However, even with 50% a baseball player's family will in reality be responsible for all of the costs of room and board and some tuition. It is a great honor to play at UT, but it is expensive. I think it makes a big difference if people are on full rides. It certainly will make them think twice deciding whether to go to school or go pro. UT has to use the "lottery" money to keep in state kids and use most of the other money on out of state kids or the big prospects. Football has 80 and basketball has around 13 full scholarships.

Baseball is the biggest Title IX casualty. By far. There's also no one and done's for baseball at the DI level which forces good baseball kids to go pro out of high school or the Juco route.
