A Different Question

So for all these posters opposed to making a coaching change, I have to ask if it was wrong to fire Johnny Majors and bring a total unknown like Phil Fulmer? Which side of the fence did you sit on 14 years ago? Do you think it was worthwhile to make a change then?

I wouldn't exactly classify PF as an unknown -- he had been on the coaching staff for a long-time, was directly involved in recruiting, actually served as head coach (successfully) for UT and was a known quantity to the AD.

That said, I wasn't sure it was the right thing to do at the time. In hindsight, it was.

Resorting to the old strawman again.

Assuming we are talking about a maximum of five more years:

If we were to continue winning 9-11 games for the next several years, the chances that we significantly improve from there by firing/hiring are questionable.

If we slip to consistent 8 or less win seasons then the sooner he's gone the better.

It is deeper than wins with this staff. I see very little improvement from problems we had a year ago. The win total may increase, but that is fool's gold.

I would like to see Fulmer take over the offensive line duties next season, get rid of Adkins, and use that spot to hire a special teams guru.

This is no shot at Adkins, I think he is a capable OL Coach, however, Fulmer is more than capable of coaching the OL, and we definitely need work on special teams.

What does winning 9 games mean now? We're going to do that this year without beating a single quality opponent. Win 9 games a year for five years and we'll have an even Baker's Dozen of years without a title.

What would you rate the odds that if we fired PF after this season, the new coach(es) win an SECCG in the next 5 years.

Now what are the odds that we do it under PF in the same time period.

How big is the spread in chances?

I said it in an earlier post. If we lose to Vanderbilt or Kentucky in these last two games he's done.

He might not get fired but this fire that you see in this message board about wanting him gone will just get gas thrown all over it and he will step down.

He is too full of himself to step down. He will have to be fired.

I agree 100%. Dale Jones, a former UT great, would be a welcome addition.

Suppose Fulmer is fired - how many years do you give the new guy to win the SECCG?

I think its usually a minimum of 4 years. An opportunity for his recruits to go through his system and see what they accomplish as seniors.

if he did resign wonder how many times "like heck" would be in his speech.

Could he sound anymore idiotic during his halftime interview with Tracy Wolfson. Paraphrasing, "we got to get # 5, we got to tackle his butt". I was waiting for him to spit some tobacco juice at some point.

Fulmer is not a very animated guy. Not as much as Les "Playin their ass off" Miles.

That coach from Rutgers man, he is funny, he has absolutley no personality in any of his interviews. He answers every question in the same mono-tone voice.

Most coaches have their thing. My favorite is Mack Brown he's a goofy dude.

1. Under Butch Davis or Greg Schiano-95%.
2. Under TCHFCATUTK-20%.
3. Spread-75%.

I agree most of our offensive miscues are on special teams we need someone that can turn that aspect around, it would make things a whole lot easier in every ball game

Gash Dawg, Fulmer would have to work like heck then.

Also our problem with special teams is we don't have our best players their.

JaKouri Williams is our kick returner, and is also on the Punt Team. He's done way more bad than good this year but game after game he's still back there dropping kickoffs and getting us 15 yard penalties for running into fair catchers.

INSANITY: doing the same crap over and over with the same negative result

It was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation there. Fulmer finally moved Coker back there to provide a spark and then he received all the heat when Coker was injured.

McFadden and Jones return kicks for Arkansas. I believe Coker can return kicks for us.

Unless the blocking improves markedly, we could have Deion Sanders and Dante Hall back there together and it wouldn't matter.

this year has been either one or other, we have good receivers, can''t run the ball, have good secondary can't stop the run, can't field punts and get up field, let people do it to us twice in a game what gives

I'm not convinced our secondary is good after that LSU game and last night we couldn't stop Monk (AKA: The only WR that Arkansas has)
