a serious candidate list

Pleeeeeease no Lawrence Frank!! Watching him coach my beloved Pistons was a nightmare...he stinks! I know college is totally different than the pro egos, but there is much, much better out there than LF.

Frank was an assistant here under O'Neill. Was my coach at a Tennessee basketball camp too.

I worked O'Neill's 1st camp at UT...Frank called in all the coaches one night and told us "Kevin is running everyone off because its all f-ing bs"...now you are trying to develop a rapport with hs coaches and you tell them that? Frank was also a student assistant for The General at Indiana...no to Lawrence Frank! Yankee jerkoff...

If you think Martin's o is bad how could you want Howland? He regularly scored 50 with a team full of NBA All-Stars.

Bruce Pearl or bust! I'm sick and tired of all the holier than thou fans that say we can't bring him back because he lied and got us in trouble. Bull Crap! He has suffered the consequences, as have all Vol fans, and should be vindicated. Many coaches currently coaching have done much worse.. What Pitino did a couple of years ago with a woman in the restaurant was despicable and ten times worse morally than what CBP ever dreamed of. If Hart hires anyone but Bruce Pearl, I'll save $1,000 year and forgo any more basketball season tix.

Well go ahead and save the money, Bruce ain't walking back thru that door

Without 30 pages of comparing Pearl and Martin and another 15 with just Pearls name....who are your top 5 that would possible take this job?

1) Lawrence Frank (Tennessee ties, will not sniff a NBA coaching job anytime soon unlike the last time when we were searching for a coach, is unhappy in Brooklyn, worked with the AD during our last coaching search, runs an offense that would be highly successful at the college level IMO. Recruiting is questionable but NBA experience and his connections has to help.

2) Tim Floyd (a winner everywhere he's been. Hes just paying his dues for the Mayo situation that I believe wasn't really his fault. Would be an instant upgrade over what we have now, that's for sure!)

3) Steve Fisher (yeah I know...if we hire him why even bother firing Pearl? This guy is a great coach and I'm shocked he hasn't went somewhere by now. )

4) Gregg Marshall (just for fun and highly unlikely)

5) Rick Byrd (should be higher and I see Tennessee as the only job he'd consider. Several ties to the school and Knoxville.)

We would be very, very, very lucky to get Lawrence Frank. And the timing might just be right.

Two things you know you're going to get with Frank:

1- He's not going to be out coached
2- He won't be outworked

When I was around Lawrence back in the mid 90's at UT, he was the "do everything" guy for O'Neill. He ran his camps. He scouted. Recruited. Helped with gameplans. He's very organized.

The only question mark I could think of is that he just hasn't been the head man at a college program. I don't think that would matter but thats the one sticking point.

And the timing might be ideal. He and Jason Kidd have obviously had their issues. The Nets would love to get off the hook for his $1 million a year for "writing reports" and Frank may just be sick of the pro grind.

Please, please make this happen Dave Hart.

Yall are nuts. He would be here in a split second if offered.

I don't know that he would. I'm not sure of his age but he's in a pretty good spot right now. He doesn't have to hit the AAU circuit. I see him out playing golf all the time at the golf course. Low stress and a chance to win every year.

I think he would have to think about it but it's not a no brainer.

1)Bruce Pearl
2)Gregg Marshall
3)Lawrence Frank

And I'm sure there are other viable candidates. Let's just start this process by getting rid of Martin first.

You are spot on.
Would be a solid hire. The differences between Kidd and Frank are Kidd is incompetent as an NBA coach period.

I like the idea of getting someone who's enjoyed great success as a head coach at a mid-major or lower-level (Div. II or III) program. IMO, that's less risky than hiring a guy who's had modest success at the same level as UT or one who's shown a lot of promise as an assistant.

With a couple of proven recruiters on his staff, I wouldn't mind if we hired any of these guys (in order of preference):

1. Jim Crutchfield, West Liberty University, WV (Div. II)
HC record: 249-45
Age: 58

Heading into his 10th season as West Liberty’s head coach, Jim Crutchfield has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top coaches at any level after transforming the Hilltopper program from conference afterthought to national championship contender.

Crutchfield set a school single-season record for victories with a 34-2 mark last winter and leads all active NCAA men’s basketball coaches in winning percentage (241-45, .843) after guiding the Hilltoppers to an unprecedented third consecutive NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championship and NCAA Division II Elite Eight berth.

2. Derrick Clark, Metro State (Div. II)
HC record: 85-19
Age: 42

Derrick Clark will enter his fourth season at Metro State in 2013-14 with three of the most successful years a coach could have under his belt. With a career record of 79-18 (.814) and an improved record and postseason finish each of his three years, he capped the 2012-13 season by reaching the national championship game and leading the Roadrunners to RMAC regular season and tournament championships, as well as the South Central Region championship in his third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.

He went on to be named Division II Bulletin national coach of the year, NABC South Central Region coach of the year and RMAC coach of the year.

3. Bob Semling, University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (Div. III)
HC record: 194-47
Age: ?

Bob Semling is in his ninth year as head coach of the UWSP men’s basketball team and has led the Pointers to three NCAA Division III national titles. Through his first eight seasons as head coach, Semling has compiled a 187-47 (104-24 WIAC) record and earned NABC and D3hoops.com Coach of the Year honors in 2010.

Semling was named the WIAC Coach of the Year on three occasions, including the 2013 season. The Pointers have appeared in the top 10 of the D3hoops.com poll 36 straight times and were in the top 25 for 87 straight polls up until the end of the 2011-12 regular season. The Pointers ranked in the top five 10 of the 14 polls conducted in 2009-10.

4. Rodney Watson, University of Southern Indiana (Div. II)
HR record: 102-24
Age: 53

Rodney Watson, the ninth head coach for USI men's basketball, has had the Screaming Eagles soaring during his three seasons. Watson is 95-24 (.798) overall during his four years, including a 54-18 (.750) GLVC record.

Watson had the Eagles challenging the NCAA Division II elite teams once again in 2012-13. USI, which was 23-8 overall and 13-5 in the GLVC regular season, reached the GLVC Tournament championship game for a second-straight and advanced to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional semifinals for the first time under Watson's tutelage.

5. Barret Peery, Indian Hills CC, IA (juco Div. I)
HC record: 158-27
Age: ?

barret_peery_1548_mb2.jpg

Entering his third season as head basketball coach at Indian Hills, Barret Peery used the Warriors' inability to play for a national title last season to fuel this year's Warrior squad.

"We are a very hungry team and have adopted the slogan 'We Won't Stop' for this year's team," said Peery about the motivation for the 2013-14 season. The Warriors were given a postseason ban by the NJCAA last year, at a time when they were 26-4 and ranked third in the nation.

It was shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons at Indian Hills with the Warriors having already clinched the conference regular season title, their seventh in eight years.

Peery's up-tempo offense, a hallmark of his teams dating back to his days as head coach at Southern Idaho, was in evidence last season, when the Warriors wound up with a 26-4 record. They averaged a school-record 97.9 points a game and scored over 100 points 14 times.

Rhetorical question was rhetorical. Thanks for dropping that knowledge on me though. To think all this time, I thought ADs surveyed and polled the fanbase before making hires. Who knew?
Thank God, Hart won't consult you or BTO, because you fools would keep Martin until he's ready to retire :lolabove:

He coached under o'neal at Tennessee and has always kept in contact with the program (speaking arrangements etc. .) And he helped our horrible AD with candidates when we hired Martin as an advisor.
If he suggested / approved the Martin hire, that alone should remove him from any consideration.

Boys as usual I have all your answers...next head coach at Tennessee...Ray Harper at Western Kentucky...guy can flat out coach...owned Bruce when they coached against each other in D2 championship games...and the great part is he will bring me in as an assistant...

Nova's Jay Wright.

I have no idea why this guy doesn't get more air time. Proven coach, always making the tournament out of a far better league than ours, and he's just got "it." I'm always impressed with his teams and their style pf play. I suppose the one issue is that he is already well compensated and he might be expensive. This guy should not be far down the list if we were going to take this process of hiring a new coach seriously.

Sadly, this post got one like, which only tells me there is at least one other boob as unintelligible as you. It's probably from your alter ego account, which coincidentally (I'm sure) posted immediately after your post I quoted.

As for Martin, if you can't already tell (which isn't a stretch since you comprehend at a 2nd grade level), he lost my support last night. I'll support the team, but I'll no longer defend him with the benefit of doubt in mind.
