A Suggested Offseason To Do List For Bruce Pearl.

I mean, I understand that you think we have terrible coaches. But did you think we scouted so poorly last year, or was it just a phenomenon that manifested itself this year?

I think we were saved last year by good shooting and forcing TOs. This year, our disastrous half court on both ends, from prep to execution, was exposed in every possible way. Lack of any discipline in our approach reared it's ugly head as well.

I'm legitimately curious - which game made you feel like our scouting was solid?

I don't think that scouting was the problem. I think execution was the problem. The new backcourt obviously could not play the perimeter defense that Pearl was hoping for. Lack of a real point guard also hurts our execution offensively. The problems this year were due to youth, IMO. I know you disagree, but I don't think you go 31-5 last year and do as well as Pearl has since he's been here by just good shooting and forcing to's. I too was disappointed with this season's result, but I am certainly not buying into a theory that the four year run Pearl is had is basically by chance, as you suggest it is.

I didn't suggest chance. I suggest that there were some senior leaders that provided accountability, made shots and generated TOs. That overshadowed many of our glaring issues. Those have been addressed here for much longer than this season.

In the end, the uptempo laissez faire style works for regular season wins, but it's not a tourney style of play because guards get better as you go. Even Nolan figured that out and adjusted. Pitino did the same a couple of years later.

Nice circular argument, buddy. Textbook. Next time you can't come up with an actual response just go with: "because hat said so." It will be more persuasive.

Do you have another argument, or is this your default?

Don’t bother asking. It was a “Hit and Run”. You call somebody out and jump off before they can respond.

He's done it to me a few times. I would still love to see his thoughts on my questions to him about deductive logic and reasoning. Apparently he didn't realize that I am a student of rhetoric (among other things) and I have a healthy interest in philosophy. In other words, you go strong to the rim or you don't go at all.

You just don't know how cool that makes you sound. I'm afraid to even let my wife read it.

Can't help but think about tater tots in a Sonic commercial...

I figure with all the Lockdown self-back patting going on, I might as well give myself a little love.

That did come off as much douchier than I intended though.

Just found the student of rhetoric stuff funny. Doesn't fit my picture of you. I'm sure the gala have to change some draw's after hearing some of that.

Do you not think that with the youth of the current squad gaining more experience, strength, and toughness, that similar results can be repeated? I really think that both you and Hat's problem with Pearl is that you just disagree with the style that he plays. As you said, Pitino and Nolan both adjusted and won, but they certainly did not abandon up-tempo basketball. Bruce can certainly adjust his half-court offense to cater to the more athletic roster that he possesses without abandoning his up-tempo style of play, and I think he will, and I am certainly not quick to dismiss him as some mediocre coach.

They all think I am an intellectual. If they only knew the horrifying truth.

In actuality, I am attempting to be a pretty well rounded person, I like winning bar arguments.

Our squad wasn't very young. It was one of the older in the conference.

My problem isn't style. It's great for recruiting. My problem is that we have no discipline about our play, no semblance of D and our halfcourt O is nonexistent. Much of these problems happen to almost every single "players' coach".

Considering we have no seniors that really count, I would say we would be considered a young team. And who I was really referring to was the backcourt which contains all first year players with the exception of Tabb.

But look across the conference. Who wasn't young at the guard spots?

UK, Ole Miss, Auburn, Alabama, LSU.---- see a pattern there?-- when our guards gain more experience, they will be just fine.

MSU had some experience, but the others didn't have any more than we did. SC was the other I was giving some credit.

Ole Miss played a freshman at the point all throughout conference play. LSU played a sophomore who barely saw the floor as a frosh.

Yes, Ole Miss did play a freshman, but they also played Huertas who averaged about 19 a game. LSU didn't rely on the sophomore, they relied on the SEC player of the year guard. And yes, SC and MSU also had much more backcourt experience. If you had given us Thornton, we would have been much more successful too.
