About Nico

Stop acting like WRs were just running wide open the whole game. They weren’t. 99% of the game not a single damn receiver could get open. Yes Nico missed some throws but give him OSUs WRs and watch him light OSU up like a Christmas tree.

When you abandon the pass even when you have all day it’s hard to say who was open or not. I know I saw guys streaking across the middle wide open a few times while Nico was looking lost and refused to throw the ball.

Nico is not capable of running a high powered offense. With his frame, He should not be running the ball. Against a team like Ohio State, he had to get rid of the ball in 3 seconds. He will never be able to do it. The weakness of the paying NIL payments for a freshman is you don't know what you are buying. It is better to get a valuable sophomore, rather than a high school senior.
I think after a bunch of college teams and their investors keep getting burned on unproven kids out of high school, this will be the future model.

He's not going pro next year unless he makes a massive leap..He's been very slow to develop. To be fair he has a trash oline and mediocre receivers so that does make it tougher.

I didn’t get to hear much of the commentary, what was he saying about Tennessee?

Other than that, great post.
It was so much the entire game that you would just need to rewatch and listen. He was commenting on the game from field level of the endzone doing play by play. It was awful.

Just for an example that sticks out. He said “Tennessee fans leaving the stadium and need to take their beaten asses back to the south where they belong”

They don’t seem to fight to get open. It’s like they run the route and if they are covered then they were just covered. No attempt to try to get open.

Tennessee needs to spend more NIL funds to hire a backup QB. Nico missed throws and open receivers. He held the ball too long. He was too slow on his release. There needs to be another option.
His release is super slow , he needs like 5-6 seconds to throw the ball. He is young and not very good yet.

Dumb take. Nico was the only one trying.
I saw Nico playing hard. I also seen him miss some routine throws ( when not pressured), stare down receivers, make up his mind where he was going come hell or high water before the play, and not go through his progressions. I also saw this all season.
He's got a lot of work if he is going to be good at QB.

It definitely will help him to get some better O-linemen and receivers that can get separation.
It will also help if the coaches will call some better plays ( ie slants, qb roll outs, TE go routes) and any play calling that takes advantage of Nico's legs.

There's MUCH room for improvement for everyone....including Nico. If anyone responsible in respect doesn't make the improvements they need to hit the road. We shouldn't accept mediocrity.
All that said, as of now I have confidence Nico can make the improvements. The coaches I am a little more worried about.

I'll tell you why he missed the majority of his throws. His O line stunk to high heaven. He didnt have time to change his mind before OSU was in his grill. He is the only guy on the whole team tonight that even halfway did what he was supposed to do. He finally got tired of the crap and did it himself.

That’s what my eyes saw.

We have at least 3 transfer receivers that play a lot and have played well at times during the year. If they aren’t any good what are we doing or is it just another excuse?

His position is secure because of his NIL deal. No one will come in to compete with that. He is the current version of Guarantano.
Like G, if his first option is covered, Nico seems to panic. He seems to take long to process what is happening…..like G did. The problem I have with Nico is that he got worse as the season progressed. The true freshman quarterbacks at UF and USCjr got better as they gained more experience. It appears that as opposing coaches figured out Nico’s shortcomings, he nor the coaching staff did not adjust. Of course the lack of speed at WR or a questionable OL did not help. Is Nico’s lack of growth an indictment of Nico or the coaching staff ability to teach /coach him to improve? The offense seemed to go into a vanilla shell as the season progressed. Was this because of Nico’s limitations or the CJH system is a one trick pony…….once stopped, there is no coaching ingenuity to adjust/adapt? Last nights game was probably a combination of all the above……and the fact that OSU has one of the most talented rosters in college football.

There are multiple offensive problems, but Nico either doesn't understand leverage or refuses to use it on the stack screens and really neglected Kitz all game long. There were open guys on a lot of those QB runs. Ohio State didn't need to press all game long. Granted, our OL sucks balls.
For the most part, he had time to throw. He missed open receivers. I did like his toughness. He ran well and hard

The team quit because they knew he wasn't capable of bringing them back. A lot of these other fans see what they want to see, but the only quarterback we've had that was capable of running Heupel's offense successfully on an SEC level was Hendon Hooker. Currently, Iamaleava can't even run the hurry up offense quickly most of the time as intended and looks like a deer in the headlights frequently before he takes off running. I played on a team with a mediocre qb before - the effort level is just not there when there's no confidence in the qb.

I’ll call it now, GMac will have the better career. Not because of talent, but Nico had way too much pressure.

He got no help tonight but he's got to get a tougher mindset..Seems timid at times.
I disagree. Nico ran more tonight than he has all year and he ran well. Some were scrambles but some were designed runs. And he ran hard. I never saw him timid . Quite the contrary from what I saw.

Dude Nico is not JG. Our route tree and scheme has not adjusted a bit for 2 years while teams with talent like OSU watch and prep for what we do. It's not complex... multiple opposing coaches have said as much. Our offense is purely based on getting guys in space then making a play. Running a bunch of hitch routes spread wide doesn't matter when the db's can cover the WR. The creativity seems like its just vanished. We have little to no pre snap motion.. we slow play down to get "right" call and still can't move the ball against top competition. Especially on the road. Golesh set things up considerably better and offense hasn't been same since he left.

I swear some of our fans are so damn stupid. Swap Howard and Nico out and how do you think this game plays out? One guy has protection and guys running wide open all night, the other is consistently getting pressured and having to throw into tight windows bc WRs can’t get any separation.

The problem is at least equally on the defensive line, secondary, offensive line, and wide receivers. With all those groups playing so poorly, it’s difficult to attribute how much is really on Nico.

Very disappointed all around after last night. The blowout score is not reflective of just how uncompetitive that game was. And it bolstered the standard narrative on this program right now. There is still a huge distance to travel. We aren’t contenders, and I suspect we’ll be worse off next season as we have to travel to Bummer and Florida. And we can’t beat Georgia anywhere. Got lucky this season with a favorable schedule (that we still couldn’t fully exploit - that Arkansas loss cost us hosting a playoff game . . . Who knows what might have been if we had). Feels a lot like the 2022 pi$$ing away of opportunities except this year we got to end the season looking like a bunch of chumps with an embarrassing beat-down.

This was a 7-5 team masquerading as a 10-2 squad. Pili’s injury really downgraded our LBs, and the offensive line isn’t good against the best competition.

Hooker made big progression in his second year with Heupel. I feel confident Nico can do the same from this year to next season.
