Adams: Re-hiring Pearl would be in the best interest of the program

I hate when any coach deliberately disregards the rules. Now, if he calls a recruit too much due to forgetfulness that's one thing. But when he goes "this is against the rules, I know it, and i'm going to do it anyway" is where I have the problem. Don't need guys leading influential young men to disregard authority just because it is a "stupid rule".

Look man, if you want to play with the big boys in college hoops you better have a coach willing to swim in the dirty water. It's just the way it is. If you think that's cheating, fine. I understand.

I choose to look at it differently. Not saying I wouldn't prefer to do things on the up and up. I just think in the real world of college hoops recruiting, it's required and most do it. Therefore it's not cheating. Especially when schools like unc cheat, get caught and nothing happens.

NCAA has quite a few stupid rules that they enforce whenever and however they want.

Still doesn't give you the right to disobey them. When I leave work after midnight, I think it is stupid I cant turn left on a red light after coming to a complete stop if there is no traffic. However, I obey that stupid law, even if the police may or may not enforce it.

Not sure what traffic laws have to do with it. Where was the compliance department and what were they doing to prevent or help with this? Aren't they supposed to be the controlling agent to see that things are done right?

It just shows that regardless how stupid a law/rule may be, it still needs to be obeyed. Compliance department can only do so much especially when the culprit is so adored. Kiffin is another perfect example.

I miss Bruce...He's done more for UT basketball than any coach in recent history...He's a proven winner...Yeah he screwed up but I am one of those that forgives and forgets...Bring back Bruce and lets get back to some exciting basketball.

Reminiscing today about having a good time watching us and wanting to get up to games.
If we can't make the tourney consistently, at least entertain us and bring us a good time.
Its 2 hours of staring and shaking my head. Wins even feel like losses at times.

Lose versus win. Not hard.

So if Zo bombs out, which is likely based on historical performance, do you trust Bama Dave to bring a top coach that turns the program into a winner like Bruce did? Bama Dave has been an AD a couple of times and assistant to the AD (Bama) in his past. Did any of the those programs have a strong, winning, basketball program? NOPE. So do you now trust he will still be able to do that because he played basketball at Bama and has what some believe is a strong background in the sport? NOPE.

He lucked into Butch after striking out a few times. Maybe you think he will luck into it again. And fans wonder why our Vol programs have sunk so low in recent times.

that is so true,do ya'll think that CBP would be a sexy hire ?

I agree and everyone knows it. When Tark was asked that time about the Kentucky violations and he replied " The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky right now that they will give Creighton two more years of probation.' I almost died laughing. Tark was fined $25,000 for making that statement, but it was true. Then look at Calhoun, Calapari, and Haith. Sadness.

Pearl bleeds orange and has taken the team farther than it has ever gone.

Martin couldn't bleed a tournament appearance if all it took was being stabbed to bleed a tournament appearance.

Let's face it... Martin was hired with the same expectations Bruce Pearl, Derek Dooley and Todd Raleigh had when they were hired from smaller programs. One is not like the others... Pearl actually won at underachieving programs. Martin, Dooley and Raleigh never won anything previously. It shows.

Seriously? Do you think Pearl is a child that has to be told what to say?

You really, really should be way more at Pearl for not having the stones to man up and tell the truth rather than the UT administration.

Yes, seriously.

I'm going to assume your 2nd "child-related" question was for dramatic effect. Pearl was an employee of the University of Tennessee and as such I expected him to have been offered the proper support, guidance and advice and counsel from his bosses and legal. Starting with providing and discussing the picture in question immediately upon discovery, not presenting him and the other coaches with it prior to entering the hearing. The attorney takes direction from his client, which leads me to the conclusion that it was his client that directed him to withhold evidence until just prior to the hearing. Yet, they told the NCAA that they had received the photo 6 days prior.

No, I shouldn't. That is your point of view, not mine. If I'm not mistaken, Pearl did have the "stones" to man up and requested a follow-up to tell them he did recognize where and when the photo was taken.

This is the same thing I was told. It is classic corporate legal behavior.

An attorney is going to act on the wishes of their client and (IMO) the client did a piss poor job of assessing the risk of such actions. They failed to realize that had they properly disclosed the information to Pearl in advance and provided thorough, timely and professional legal guidance to the employee, chances are none of this would have occurred. We would have had to deal with the secondary violation infraction and perhaps some loss of scholarships. They elected to throw the employee to the wolves, believing that the risk was too high in telling him and that it was for the greater good.

The actions by, and the behavior of, our UT executives is not something that goes unnoticed within the coaching fraternity. Cheek, Hamilton, et. al., are (IMO) why we have had such a hard time attracting top tier coaches in our major sports and why we ended up with Kiffin, Dooley and Martin.

For the record, I am an attorney and I would never have pulled what this lawyer pulled with respect to non-disclosure of the photo to CBP and staff! The fact is that the University hired this attorney to attend the NCAA questioning of CBP and staff. This act alone would lead any reasonably minded individual or coach to believe that the lawyer/attorney was representing the interests of not only UT but also CBP and staff.

If that was not the intention of the University then the University and the attorney would have disclosed/informed (made clear verbally and in writing) CBP and staff that the attorney did not in fact represent the interests of CBP and staff AND that CBP and staff may want to hire their own attorneys. The attorney's failure to disclose the photo to CBP and staff could only be deliberate. There are serious ethical ramifications for what this lawyer did and did not do according to the Rules of Professional Conduct.

Thanks for providing a professional point of view. It is much appreciated. Based on my understanding of the dynamics, the attorney was supposedly only representing UT. How that was presented or disclosed to the coaching staff is unclear. This interview lends some credence to that.

Which school with a 'vision' will hire Bruce Pearl next year? - CBSSports.com

My perception is that the attorney hired by UT acted on direction from his client (UT) relative to disclosure (timing and how it was presented). I hold the UT administration responsible for not standing behind the coaches and affording them with adequate support and representation, which would (IMO) prevented situation that caused the panic.

Yes, Pearl lied. He admitted it, took responsibility, apologized and paid the price.

Thanks again for the post.

Good article. CBP will be coaching bball again and will make that program relevant. He has won everywhere he has coached and will win again. It's a shame that he won't do it here unless it is on the other bench.

why are the only options for UT coaches ones who we've fired?

such a lazy filler piece by Adams and a perfect example of why no one wants to pay for that crap

Basically sums up my feelings on the subject. UT has an NBA quality arena, top 10 attendance (pre Martin), a sizable athletic department and a desperate fan base; there is no reason that we can't fill the void behind UK and UF. And no reason to continue shopping in the bargain bin. (Cuanzo is what, the 11th highest paid coach in the conference?)

We still had Top 10 his first 2 seasons.

I don't think Martin is the man for the job, but I can't see Tennessee placing Pearl back into the job. Pearl was dumb and could be the head coach if he had not lied. I liked the guy and think he will be a great hc again- just not at UT.
