Aidoo to the portal confirmed

Aidoo released the obligatory statement and it included the following line (scratches head)

And this is what rubs fans the wrong way. Don't be disingenuous in your farewell. People, at least myself, would respect your decision much more if you just came out and said that nothing in life is guaranteed and that you have an opportunity to set yourself up with life-changing wealth and opportunity elsewhere that isn't necessarily available for you at Tennessee, and you can't take a risk of passing that up.

What if he sincerely wouldn't trade his UT experience? You think maybe he liked it here and enjoyed winning the SEC and making the elite 8? What a crazy concept. The fact that people think this is disengenuous to say when it's probably what most departing players would feel under these circumstances...can you look at anything from the other person's perspective, I wonder.

Look, it sounds like he wants to be closer to home and make more $. Why begrudge anybody for that? You leave your employer for more $ and you tell him you loved your time there and hate to leave...then he slaps you with the "that's disengenuous." He's the douche, not you.

On TN’s most successful team ever, JA was the 3rd leading scorer and grabbed the most rebounds per game and blocked the most shots. TN doesn’t win the SEC and make the Elite 8 without him.

It’s disappointing to see him leaving, but it is low rent to throw message board insults at him.

I hope he finds what he’s looking for.

Look, I don't know why your getting lost in your feelings over my opinion unless your name is Jonas Aidoo. You don't have to agree with me.

Your last paragraph is exactly my point. If he said he wanted to be closer to home and receive life-changing money that wasn't available to him before and that it's an opportunity he can't pass up, I think far fewer people have a problem with it. At least reasonable people who are able to step outside their fandom.

But when you say you wouldn't trade the opportunity to put on a Tennessee uniform for anything when you are literally trading it for something (money, opportunity, etc), that's the very definition of disingenuous. Without dissecting whether he's referring to his past opportunity to wear the orange and white, or bypassing the future opportunity to do it one more year, the point is that he didn't have to say anything. How people interpret that message is on him whether he likes it or not, and whether you disagree in your hastiness to white knight for him.

If I leave my job, I'm sure as heck not going to tell my now former boss that it's been real and I wouldn't trade the opportunity you gave me for anything (except the $30k raise I'm getting down the street, of course). I'd just say thanks for the opportunity you gave me, and I feel this is an opportunity I can't pass up.

At the end of the day, I'm wholly unaffected by his decision. Far less than your emotional reply seems to think I am. I just can understand how that phrase would leave Tennessee fans scratching their collective heads.

You're not being reasonable. It's common for somebody to say they wouldn't trade their experience but are also ready to move on. Anybody with life experience should understand that. Hell, there are experiences I didn't like that I wouldn't trade.

I’m being very reasonable. I’m sorry you it bothers you, but it’s very reasonable to state that someone should refrain from saying ”I wouldn’t trade it for anything” when they’re walking out the door for more money. That’s the very definition of trading it for anything. It’s disingenuous. You’ve picked a very bizarre hill to die on with this. To each his own.

Again, I’m not blaming the guy for leaving. Cash in while you can. But from a PR perspective, it was a statement that will rightfully rub many Tennessee fans the wrong way.

It's reasonable to look at a 20 yo kid saying a nice thing in the most negative way possible? Grow up. It'll rub Tenn fans wrong because too many of us are sensitive little babies who have too much of their identity tied to college sports

What I’d prefer them to say is I would have preferred to stay at UT, but I have an offer that’s $200K better to play elsewhere and I don’t feel that me and my family can afford to turn that down. I hope Vol Nation can understand my situation and why I’m transferring.

Yeah, that's an even more explicit version of what I'm saying. I don't even think TN fans need to know the dollar amount. Just say that this was a business decision (that's subtle enough to make the point), I'll miss being a part of this team, and I have to do what is best for me and my family. I think most reasonable people can side with that line of thinking, especially for a guy who will struggle to make an NBA roster. Monetizing your athleticism to the greatest extent possible isn't a shameful act. But don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining, which is how his unnecessary poor wording will be interpreted by many.

Basilio said that Aidoo is asking for more than Dalton Knecht got last year lol. (Supposedly was highest compensated on the team at 500k)
Let's face facts:
JA is not likely to play in the NBA unless he goes to another level of aggressive playing. Therefore, he should do a market analysis and get market value.
TA has gone shopping ... I hope he finds what he is looking for.
DJ and FD both have moved along to find a situation that suits them better, I wish them both well.

Here's hoping that the NIL money we need is ready and waiting to be assigned to the candidates that want to be at Tennessee in the fall of 24.

His life and career but I think Aidoo is making a mistake by leaving, which could also be detrimental to his professional goals. He is positioned to be a 1st or 2nd offensive option for UT next year, after being an integral part of our success this year and can readily work on improving his weaknesses and expand his game at UT with a coach who believes in him vs taking a chance with another program who knows little about him. It's not like UT is some scrub program and he is moving to an appreciably better team or conference to compete in or he is begging for minutes. It's a lateral transfer. His situation is much different than a Dilione, Jefferson and Awaka who want alot more minutes and opportunities. He going to be afforded the "benefit of the doubt" if he has a bad stretch of play with a new coach who looks at him as a one-year rental who is paid to perform and may not look at him as a 1st or 2nd scoring option?

I get it, these guys want to be paid like semi-professionals, but expectations come along with it. Barnes has shown the utmost patience with seniors who have been committed to the program for multiple years. Aidoo may not enjoy that elsewhere. If there are other personal reasons why he is leaving, no obligation to share that with fans, but purely on perception, he gets to be the "guy" next year at UT if he wanted it, but he is choosing to leave, which says alot. We know he entertained leaving last year and I suspect is overplaying his hand this year. Really hard to understand that his opportunity to show his talents is going to be better elsewhere, and it very well may be worse.

Good luck to him wherever he goes, but this may be a short-term impulse which doesn't pay off in the long run.

I don't care one way or the other, because these kids are gonna do what they're gonna do. But, is it true that Aidoo got his feelings hurt by Vol Twitter comments about his performance vs Purdue and that's a big reason he's not sticking around?

I doubt there’s anyway that anyone could know that. Seems like a pretty big decision to make based on tweets though so I’d doubt it. Then again, lots of people seem to place value on what random strangers shout into the void so who knows?

Just stop spreading this nonsense.

Only 3 of those are still coaching and/or alive. That's not to say I think tough coaching is a bad thing, but if you're going to try to prove it, maybe naming coaches that aren't done or 6' under will help your case.
It was just meant to show examples of coaches known for being very tough, with intense practices, and high expectations. I guess I could’ve included a few more men and a few women
Like Kim Mulkey, Wes Moore, Geno, Jody Adams, Dawn Staley, Buzz Williams, Bobby & Danny Hurley…. I could go on and on listing tough disciplinarian coaches who are highly successful. Maybe you should read more because I don’t have to prove anything. Their numbers speak for themselves.
I hope Kim Caldwell is tough as they come.

From the UNC rivals page. Judas Aidoo going in conference would pretty much seal the deal as far as being dead to most here. At least UNC would make sense on several other fronts and keep some goodwill with us.

Makes total sense. Immediately thought when it was mentioned blue blood(s) were pursuing, that Aidoo may end up in Chapel Hill since it's close to home and UNC has a need for a 5.

Just an observation from the guy’s post…mentor is the politically correct word for “handler”. This Anthony Simmons guy has probably been putting feelers out for several weeks now if I had to guess.
