I'm heading back to class right now, but I wanted to lay this topic on the table.

Does anyone think that Erik Ainge or Robert Meachem could end up being a Heisman finalist?

I hope not. As GAVol says, the Vols play better as the underdog or when they're under the radar.

no, but it's about logic, it's tough enough to win a heisman while playing in the SEC. Even harder when you know our offense is going to be run first. It's just not going to happen.

Agree. The big numbers will be hard to put up week in and week out vs UF, UGA, and LSU. Not impossible but highly improbable.

Okay... well... just so we make that clear. Haha...

You DID ask our opinions on if they had a chance, and I gave you my opinion. :) I just didn't correctly communicate my lightheartedness. :D

Ainge has more of a chance than Meachem. Ainge would need to put up huge numbers against UF, LSU, Alabama, you know the drill. He'd also need some passes that go 50+ that don't have 45 yards of YAC attached to it.

Only two WRs have ever won the Heisman so it's pretty unlikely for Meach unless his numbers from the Cal game turn out to be the same as his season average numbers after 12 games. EA would have the better chance but if it's going to a QB this year then I'd say Troy Smith and Brady Quinn are the frontrunners with EA, JaMarcus Russell, Brian Brohm and Chad Henne a notch below them. A lot of it will come down to team performance IMO. There's also a large number of Freshmen and Sophs starting at QB at some big schools this year and if one of them really lights it up he could become a media darling. Finally, the SEC (really the South in general) does not have a great track record in Heisman balloting. If you take the FLA schools out of the equation the last southern school Heisman winner was Bo Jackson.

Ainge has the opportunity to follow the same path that Brady Quinn followed. So, I do not think it is outlandish to think Ainge could end up being a Heisman finalist. I also do not think it is outlandish to still believe Ainge could lose the job to Crompton. We will know a lot more after this Saturday and will truly know where we stand after the 16th. If he continues playing like he did against Cal, though, he gets the invite to NYC.

I don't care either. I don't want any Heismann talk for any of them. That game on Saturday night was the closet thing to a team that UT has put on the field in a while. I like to see the team do well, could not care less about any indiviual awards.

Not as long USC, Oh St, Mich & N.D. are still playing football.

Meach has a chance to be a finalist if he gets consistent, especially in big games... but fat chance on winning it. A vol would have to cure cancer while saving a beached whale and ending world hunger to win that trophy.

USC and Michigan don't have any Heisman candidates this year.

I think if Ainge puts up big numbers against Air Force and Florida in consecutive weeks, his name will be mentionned in Heisman talk. He's a very long shot to win it, but I think he can put his name in the race.

For everyone who says, "We don't want any Heisman talk, we want a complete team to win games," I completely agree. If UT wins a National Championship this year but doesn't have a single player even close to being brought up in the Heisman race, no one in their right mind would be disappointed.

Until then... AINGE FOR HEISMAN! :peace2:

Except that Heath Shuler would have won it had he returned for his senior season...

Fans who state that they don't care about their guys getting the Heisman are just angry that their guy has never won the Heisman. I care and I sure as heck hope that Meach or Ainge can continue to play as they did Saturday evening. They do that and they will be in NYC in December.
