Ainge or Meachem for Heisman?

 I have this vision in my mind of someone from a rival team's board running back and saying "One game, and those nutty Vol fans are already talking about heisman trophies!!!"

Individual awards come after team accomplishments. Let's file this idea away for awhile....

Ainge-National POW
Mayo-National DPOW

It is week 1, right?

Also, rival fan's are much more concerned now with the game against UT than with what we are discussing on here.

WAY too early to start talking about this.

I guess I would be proud if a Vol wins it, but after Peyton Manning got screwed, I have been done with it.

The Hypesman is all about the media feeding frenzy and it starts at the end of last season, Ainge might end up with an invite if we were to win the SECC but it would just be to throw us a bone after such a turn around from last season. Ainge's chance at winning it this yr went out the window about the time he threw the hail mary from the endzone at LSU.

As most others have said right now about 25 players could be Heisman finalist. If they put up those numbers against Florida then we can talk Heismans.

Ainge would need to put up huge numbers against UF, LSU, Alabama, you know the drill. He'd also need some passes that go 50+ that don't have 45 yards of YAC attached to it.

And that would put him on the frontrunner list for next year in the Heisman popularity contest presented by ESPN. With Brady Quinn on the ballot this year, I don't think Charles Woodson himself could win it if Notre Dame goes at least 8-4.

I think what Ainge has to prove is that he can do this (ie, this level of focus and confidence) from game to game. That has been the question for me all along. Even last season he showed moments of brilliance followed by complete nuckleheaditits. Without ainge, meachem aint gonna do much. The other obstacle is ESPN. I think Ainge would have to complete some 150 yard passes to oust Mr Quinn Medicine Man from the favorite spot, and Mr Medicine Man would have to start throwing backwards. That's one thing that sucks these days is that ESPN decides who the favorite is before the season begins.

However crazy I might think this topic is, I'm going to throw this in...

If Meachem puts up numbers like 5 receptions for 182 yards and 2 TD's every game, he's going to win an award of some kind.

I'd be pretty surprised if Brady Quinn doesn't win it. I felt the same way about Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. None of our guys have gotten preseason Heisman hype and I think that is pretty hard to overcome. I could be wrong, but even if Quinn doesn't win it, I highly doubt Ainge will get it. Our offense could be good, but do you expect it to be better than it was for Manning's senior year?

The guy who is emerging as a dark horse is Kenny Irons.

So the Cal game was a fluke, huh? And you must be able to predict the future?

NO FLUKE, if they play like they did Sat. Then they will be playing as a team if Awards come to a player then so be it, the greater Award is to play and win as a team.

None of the Vols will be a heisman finalist this year. Fowler and those guys have already decided who those guys are going to be. If we play the rest of the year like we did Saturday we may have one or two guys getting mentioned next year. we'll see.

Very well said. I almost spit the coffee out of my mouth when I saw this post. One great game does not a Heisman make.

Contrary to what everyone on this board seems to believe, the Heisman is not decided by ESPN...it is decided on the field! I know people are upset that Manning lost to Woodson, almost 10 years ago, and that is certainly clouding judgment. However, Manning had a better year his Junior year and finished 5th or 6th in the voting. Finishing 2nd in the voting his Senior year should have been pretty flattering to us Vols fans.

If Ainge continues to put up around 300/game with a 4:1 TD:INT ratio, then he will be in NYC. Also, the difference between Ainge and Irons is that Ainge played a defense that many in the nation still feel is going to be a solid defense this year. Irons played WSU.

Does 60 minutes of football really have people thinking Ainge is a Heisman candidate? Don't get me wrong, I think Ainge can be pretty good, but aren't some people letting their imaginations run a little wild?

It is a "seasonal" award. Right now, he is having the best offensive season in the nation...

Yes it is early. But he has the best QB rating and put up some very good numbers overall. So let people have their fun. I just hope this early season attitude keeps going...
