Air Force vs. Tennessee Game Thread

This is our first year in a long, long time where special teams weren't just coached by committee with none of the serious, special attention to the squads as wholes like Beamer and others give them.

I'm guessing that tonight's special teams problems were just a result of us/ Fulmer being new at coaching them like they should be coached, and AF having a tradition of giving them the kind of attention the modern game requires.

Looks like Texas may lose...GOOD! They MUST lose this game, or else they waltz to the rose bowl on the strength of a typically weak schedule...who cares if Buckeyes stay #1...Texas MUST lose!!!!!!

Are there really 1,080 posts in this thread? Damn!!! This has been one active thread today!

Our offense played really well today. Ainge looked fantastic. We had a couple of dropped balls that need to be eliminated, but other than that, our wide receivers played really well tonight also. Our offensive line is providing good pass protection, but it's not consistently getting a good push on running plays, even playing against much smaller defensive fronts like Cal and Air Force. This is a potential problem as we go up against fiercer competition. Our defense and special teams looked nothing short of pathetic tonight. We've never defended the option well, and that's on Chavis. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how to stop an option attack. It just takes team discipline and good tackling. Those have never been strong suits of our defense, and it has showed in our games against teams with option attacks.

The good news is that there is now no chance of any of our players getting overconfident entering the Florida game. The bad news is that our defense must play much better next week, and we sustained significant injuries in this game.

I hope everyone is including Inky Johnson in their prayers tonight.

tidwell's post game, listening to the game on the radio, while watching the race thoughts:

Ainge was ON it. Man that was sweet to hear. Was that INT really a bad throw just trying to make up for the two prior penalties.

How many guys went down with injuries? Foster, Johnson, and Ramone?

One of the radio guys hit it... "Let's not schedule Air Force again..."

Xavier Mitchell is my hero.

How did the Vols running game look? The only thing I heard on the radio was complete pass after complete pass by Ainge.

WHEW!!!!!!!!!

HUGE sigh of relief. I had been thinking all week that after the huge Cal win and Florida rolling into town next week, Air Force could be a dreaded "trap" game, and it was. We had no answers for the triple option, and Air Force ran it to utter perfection.

As far as Fisher DeBerry going for two - I agree with Tim Priest; you're an underdog, on the road, with a chance to (probably) win the game. They only needed 2 yards. Too many variables in overtime. DeBerry made the right call; UT's defense just made a HUGE play to stop it. And even then, they weren't done; this thread could have a totally different tone if they weren't offsides on the second onside kick.

I'm going to try to be optimistic and say that Air Force putting up 30 points is an anomaly due to UT (or any SEC school) so seldom playing a team that runs the option. Air Force is a solid football team and they will definitely make some noise in the Mountain West.

Poetic justice: Air Force vs. South Carolina in the Music City Bowl - DeBerry's Triple Option causes Spurrier to break his own single-game record for visor tosses.
