'24 AL EDGE Jordan Ross (Tennessee)

Except for the fact hes won back to back national titles.... right? lol
Smart is a very good recruiter. He appears to be really good at developing players. He motivates his guys. His strength is not X's and O's. That is especially true on O where he seems to almost have a phobia of anything "new" but it is also true on D. He's going to be excellent in terms of talent and fundamentals. That wins for him.

We will see if Heupel who is an elite X's and O's guy can catch him with the talent he's getting.

IMHO, the one potentially fatal flaw we've seen evidence of the most is UGA's lack of off the field discipline. Will it translate into problems within the program and on the field? That was basically the downfall of Fulmer.

FWIW, Bama was the most talented team in the country last year and it wasn't all that close according to 247. Their average player score was 94.48. UGA was 2nd with 93.37. OSU was third with 92.82.

To illustrate how NOT predictive these rankings are even taken over a multi-year span... Bama lost to UT with an 87.77 average and LSU with a 90.55 average.

If the ratings and rankings were as accurate as some here claim, that couldn't happen. Bama not only has a big advantage according to 247's ratings in talent... they have one of the greatest coaches in the history of college football.

Arguable neither of those losses happen without the transfer portal though. Specifically what Tennessee and LSU added at the QB position. Not trying to take away from what you’re saying but the portal makes a lot of difference in addition to recruiting rankings. Tennessee has done a great job identifying and developing talent that they’ve got from the portal.

Transfers are included in those calculations.

I don't disagree with you totally. In fact, I think the portal is an equalizer. UT is missing on some DL recruits and some are going hyper chik'n lil because of it. But continued success on the field and an NIL system that is disciplined can fix that by pulling proven performers out of the portal.

Also, if I wanted to play devil's advocate about the Bama game... what would the UT game have been like if they didn't get Gibbs out of the portal? And Bama hasn't had a class rated out of the top 3 in a while. Heupel built a roster from scraps.

It is like you either don't even read or understand these ideas. You fixate on individual players and somehow believe they are so uniquely talented and so sure to be successful that failure to sign them will result in the collapse of the program.

Yours is just a really, really bad, closed minded, and irrational way of thinking. There are talented guys out there. Somewhere there are 3* kids who the recruiting sites haven't noticed with just as much potential as all of these guys you're wringing your hands over. So yeah, it is abjectly stupid to over pay when you can find others with some patience or work the portal to get someone with proven talent.
I swear he/she is a troll no joke

A kid who is presumably chasing NIL, who could be a bust, and seems wishy-washy is not in need. We got a guy like Pearce who blew up at the end of the year. If we don't get him, we'll be fine. RG hasn't let me down yet.

And there it is. Missed out and now attacking a kids character. So presumably the only reason we landed Nico was because of NIL. So was he wishy-washy as well?

But remember we "won't overpay for anyone" so apparently we are going to let the chips fall where they may and lose kids and just be happy with who we get according to the narrative on here lately... IMO, Heup may be treading on a slippery slope because if we start slipping or going backwards because of lack of talent, he won't have any excuses because apparently he is choosing to not overpay and banking on competing with GA and AL year in and year out with a less talented roster... Wonder how long that will last?
When I say doom you say gloom!

This ^. I feel that Heup will turn down a five star if he foresees possible locker room conflicts down the road. I think that philosophy will eventually pay dividends

I don’t think it is necessarily “attacking a kid’s character” to suggest they are chasing the money. I know I would have been at the age of 17 or 18. Most of these kids will never make an NFL squad and there is no guarantee that they will make it in college or avoid injury. Take the money if you can get it.

We shouldn't attack kids because of the choice they make.

We also shouldn't attack the staff without full knowledge of how they recruited a player and what that player considered most important in their decision.

A kid who is presumably chasing NIL,
Because chat rooms of opposing team fans have constructed a narrative? NIL will play into every kid's decision. That doesn't prove that a kid is chasing NIL. We actually don't know who made him the best offer. People are making assumptions but he could be at MU because he wanted to be close to home and they just had to match the best offer.

who could be a bust,
That is true of every player that signs. I think that's a great reason not to overpay a player in NIL. But there are no guarantees in recruiting.

and seems wishy-washy is not in need.
No single player is a "need". UT needs talent on the DL for the out years. The roster loses a bunch of guys over the next couple of years. That talent can come from the guys being discussed, guys who will be talked about or emerge later, or portal guys.

That said, I can't condemn a kid for struggling with this kind of decision if it bothers fans that he's "wishy-washy".

Generally I agree with you on this situation. I just think we need to avoid making assumptions about what motivates these recruits to choose a school.

Portal is definitely why we moved as fast as we did. Without hendon we wouldn’t have had the year we did.
I think as fans we just want to gobble up as much talent as possible. Huepel can coach and with athletes all over the board we will continue to win. No doubt Kirby can coach, but he’s being bailed out by an insanely stacked roster. We have had trouble over coming mistakes in the past because we didn’t have the horses. Huepel getting studs on both sides is how we win a championship.
