Al Washington (Potential DC)

Not when we hired Dooley, Butch or Pruitt. None of those guys hired the type staff on defense that we’re potentially speaking of.

Things that are different are not the same.
Pruitt was the one of the biggest DC names in the country and people were absolutely excited for the defensive staff he brought in and then Ansley. Shoop was one of the hottest names in the country as well.

Same thing with Chaney. We thought we would have the 2012 offense again.

Well some Buckeye boards are assuming Al Washington accepted the job with the Vols; Interesting comment here:

And THAT there is the key question in all of this. He was solid as a recruiter and had a huge upside HOWEVER he proved ZERO as far as I'm concerned as a LBers coach. He inherited Borland, Werner and Harrison as the LBer trio with Browning rotating in and out after the 2018 season. And that core reamined the starting trio after he took over in his first season. And then beyond into his third here.
So in a best-case scenario, maybe this isn't all that bad of a thing because the only unit he really worked with, is now gone and now a new guy can step in and take the guys remaining here---who've been here for what seems like the past 7 years, to the next level. Because I had numerous questions as to how Borland could continue being a starter here when he was a liability in pass coverage. How they could never really figure out where best to put Browning. Also how they were never able to utilize Werner's athletic ability in full. I have no doubt that if Fickell were still here as LBers coach---and TRUST ME, I had many issues with Fickell as a LBers coach early on here. It took me a while to warm to him as a DE and former co DL coach being a LBers coach. But once he found his niche in developing that walk-out LBer first with Shazier and then with Darron Lee then his start with Harrison, I have no doubt he would've done likewise with Werner who he predicted would be a good one upon his departure from here for the UC job. But from an Xs and Os LBers coach so to speak, I saw nothing from Washington. The reason why Hilliard came on late in the 2020 season is because he already had natural ability. He just needed to be able to remain healthy to show it but that IMHO had little to do with Washington's development of him.
I also firmly believe that Tennessee's decision to pursue Washington was purely so they could try and hold onto Henry Lo To To (I can't recall or spell his exact last name but you get who I'm referring to). In their mind it was a chess move to hold onto one of their very best prospects--esp since Washington was the lead recruiter for him while in the Transfer Portal. so NOW, Day WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?! Are you going to allow your inner Gene Smith and Tressel to take over where you play coy and say, "Well it happens?" OR, will you DARE to get even with the SEC by stealing one of their best, up and coming and reputable LBers coaches? Because on this one, YOU CANNOT recruit from within as you did last week when you promoted Matty Barnes from Special Teams coach to Safeties/DBs coach. And you can't elevate an another internal hire to his former spot as Special Teams coordinator either. You MUST go for the gusto and hit for the fences on this next one.
You don't pay---you lose! That's the lesson here. If the Buckeyes want to continue to play, compete and win at the national level, they MUST learn how to be underhanded, cunning and just flat out dirty and evil to beat the SEC. It's THAT DAMN SIMPLE!

FWIW.........Buckeye message board

Drewbdu 10 MINUTES AGO
Nevada just said Washington couldn't sign the paperwork and changed his mind at the last minute. Seems like he's staying.

What board is this from?

Do you really believe Steele would stay on just to try to get the new DC to fail? Really?
Steele has 2.5M coming to him for the next 2 years doing whatever the heck he wants. Disappointment makes people bitter. He has history, apparently.

This may be moot. Day might've found a few spare hundred thousand.......

One of our biggest issues right now is the NCAA. Every coach wants to know what the punishment will be. I’m hearing it could be up to 18 months before they make a decision. If that’s the case, that length of time will be almost as detrimental as the punishment itself. Coaches and players are hesitant to jump on board not knowing what’s going to happen as far as the NCAA goes. I for one hope they make a swift judgment regardless of what the penalties are.

We are an eternally cursed program if we cannot entice a guy who has never been a coordinator at any level and no loyalty to Ohio State to leave for a raise, a promotion, and an AHC title. I get that there is risk involved for him at a professional level, but dang...we offered the moon, it feels like.

Why would he be motivated to cause trouble? He can get his 2.5mil for two years, look like the ultimate team player, audition for a last big hurrah elsewhere. Stinking up his alma mater has zero value add for him. If I am hearing correctly, he is still making recruiting efforts for our new coach to this day. I don’t see him getting more than 2.5 anywhere and bet he does not either and that is the only way he makes more than riding it out as a position coach and get some thanks from CJH. Could be a big help to a younger DC if that is the route.

If he really is this back and forth on wanting the job or wanting to stay there and can't make up his mind, we need to move on. The second Coombs goes back to the NFL or something else happens where he can go back to Ohio as DC, he'll bolt. His heart is clearly there. Offer that same $ to the DC at Tulane or bring back Kacy Rodgers and let's get going.

Doug Mathews was a terrible DC. Cost us the ‘90
Natty. Majors fired that ass
Back to back conference championships sounds pretty nice right now.

Mathews did 2 things: he scrapped the 5-2 and put a 4-3 in place. And he moved guys to other positions. We just need someone who knows what the hell they are doing. I don’t give a rip if we put Kevin (70 points) Steele or not. Experience is overrated when the old guy isn’t hungry anymore.
